TNA Genesis PPV Evaluation
January 8, 2012

BEST MATCH – X DIVISION FOUR-WAY

I know it’s an odd choice to select the opener as the best match on the card, but I don’t think there was anything better. Austin Aries is phenomenal with his character, the match had a great amount of near falls, the champ was terrific in the ring, and he came across as a major league deal (he is almost certainly on the verge of being a TNA staple as long as they don't mess it up). I thought this match was a great way to open the show. But, then, the show kept going.

WORST MATCH – MONSTER’S BALL

I don't even know where to begin. I thought this match was awful. Now, to clarify, Bully Ray is great in his role. Abyss certainly could never be accused of not giving his all. But, the sheer level of needless brutality in the match was ridiculous to me. It’s a different time now. I understand, of course, that this is my opinion, only, but watching some cut themselves on television is not impressive, or “cool.” It’s just kind of depressing.

BIGGEST SURPRISE – MAIN EVENT

I thought the main event between TNA champ Robert Roode and Jeff Hardy was okay. Until the ending. It seemed to drag at times, and then going off the air for the second straight TNA pay-per-view with no clear winner? Extraordinary. These shows cost money, TNA.

BIGGEST LETDOWN – TNA GENESIS

For a while a few months ago, TNA seemed to be finding a nice rhythm: Impact certainly got better and the shows seemed to flow nicely towards the next pay-per-view. Now? Not so much. On paper, I thought this show might be a pleasant surprise. But, instead it now just seems that TNA doesn’t even care that people had to buy this show, and the booking is just a series of non-finishes that seem to be intentionally trying to frustrate the viewer. I have no issue with the wrestlers - the roster is generally great - but who on earth thought the end to the main event was a good idea?

BEST QUOTE – BULLY RAY

Not much in terms of great quotes on this show, but I thought Bully Ray (who has been exceptional on the mic as of late) shouting out to Terry Funk and Mick Foley before his ‘hardcore’ match was a nice touch.

BEST MOVE – 450

In the night’s best match, I thought the 450 splash that Aries landed was a great moment.

BEST MATCH FINISH – X DIVISION

Aries rightfully retained, and looked strong doing so. Thumbs up, here.

OTHER THOUGHTS

It’s crazy how much TNA tries to cram into its shows. So much happens that it blends together and becomes obsolete. At the Royal Rumble in 1995, there was a Bret Hart vs. Diesel match that featured Bret going through a table. It was shocking, and the crowd was stunned. Can you remember the last time you cared about a table spot? Wrestling needs to take its time. Let things breathe. Build towards things. I picked the 450 splash from Aries as move of the night because it fit in at the right time of the match, and Aries is exceptional in-ring. But. how many 450 splashes should you see, ever? Moves like that should be the highlight-reel moments.

Who thought the end of the Angle-Storm match was a good idea?! Storm should be being pushed to the moon, and instead he gets pinned after a kick. Yep. A kick.

WHAT IT’LL BE REMEMBERED FOR

Sadly, not much. It was an underwhelming night of action that was topped off by a main event without a finish. A forgettable show. Funnily enough, though, it's going to be number 1 for a bit.
