VINCE RUSSO INTERVIEW SUMMARY (01-20-03)

This week, NWA-TNA's Vince Russo joined the No Holds Barred radio show and here are the highlights.

He put over the NWA-TNA and he said to expect the unexpected this Wednesday as he calls the shots for this week's show. He also teased a huge surprise for the program and especially Jeff Jarrett and said it was 90% confirmed.

He has no problem with NWA-TNA using some older talents but feels the younger guys should be featured. He feels his push for the younger talent is what buried him in WCW. He also noted that the legends of pro wrestling are very important to the product and if they're willing to work with younger talent in order to help the product, then that's good for the company.

He has no personal issues with Mike Tenay and feels they are both very passionate men with different views on the business.

Vince said he and Jerry Jarrett have no working relationship as they barely speak but he respects Jarrett and says each of them have the same goal in mind when it comes to doing what is best for NWA-TNA.

Russo said he has no problem with Roddy Piper appearing on this week's show but was very upset with Roddy's comments about Owen Hart the last time he was on the show. He called it a move to sell books as Piper didn't know the relationship Russo had with Hart and said it was something he can never forgive Piper for.

Russo said he watched the Raw special for 5 minutes and had to turn it off. He called the WWE storylines blatantly fake and says the audience can't buy into them. He feels the WWE is falling back to the early 90's when they had no idea of what the audience wanted.

He did say his favorite Raw moments were the spots with The Rock and Mick Foley because he worked very closely with the 2 of them and says that they were not only 2 of the greatest entertainers he's ever dealt with but they were also 2 of the greatest people he's ever worked with.

Russo addressed Curt Hennig's comments from last week's NHB show regarding talent not having enough input in the creative direction by saying he would have gladly accepted input from Curt or any other wrestler because he feels it helps the company and creative storylines but also noted that Curt never approached him once to express his frustrations and he was very surprised to learn that Curt felt the way he did.

He called Sean Waltman's decision to leave NWA-TNA ridiculous as Waltman made his most money with Russo in WWE with the DX group. Russo added that he was largely responsible for DX's success because he worked very closely with the group and is baffled by Waltman's decision to not want to work with him but says he respects him none the less.

Russo said those in the business who have problems with him, dislike him because he is openly honest and doesn't always say what the boys want to hear. Russo mentioned that many in the business hide the truth and he doesn't do business that way.

He closed the interview by adding that wrestling needs more realism and the public needs to be taken inside the private world of pro wrestling a lot more because the storylines today are very hard to believe. He feels that fans today are having their intelligence insulted with fake storylines each week and the way to keep them interested is to take a more realistic approach.
