WWE Hall of Famer Jerry Lawler says his chest is sore, he may have a few cracked ribs, and his voice is still recovering from having a breathing tube in his throat, but otherwise he "feels good" after being told by a cardiologist that he had the best-case scenario for a heart-attack victim.
Lawler told the Memphis media Wednesday afternoon from his home in Memphis that a local cardiologist he met with this week said he had the "best outcome" following a heart attack - all major arteries are clear and two small arteries at the bottom of his heart were what caused his "cardiac event" last Monday on Raw. Lawler recalled his cardiologist telling him, "I've seen a lot of cardiac events and from how yours started, it could have turned out worse."
Lawler said that "minimal damage was done" and his heart should "heal itself and get back to normal." Lawler added, "I haven't had any after-effects as far as chest pains or anything like that."
Asked to assess his overall health, Lawler said, "Actually, I feel really well considering what all happened. My chest is still sore from the compressions," referring to WWE's Dr. Samson, who may have cracked a few ribs during CPR, but the compressions saved his life.
As for the events on the September 10 Raw in Montreal, Lawler says he doesn't remember much after the opening segment. He says he remembers going to Montreal, having a meeting to go over plans for the show, being introduced the crowd for commentary, and being on commentary for the opening segment involving Bret Hart and C.M. Punk, but nothing else.
Lawler said his girlfriend showed him a replay of the two-segment tag match he was involved in during Raw, but says it's like watching a match that occurred ten years ago that he doesn't remember happening. Overall, Lawler says the last thing he remembers was Hart and Punk in the ring, then waking up in a hospital, and he has no recollection of returning to commentary after his tag match. He joked that he didn't see any bright lights or dead relatives while unconscious.
As for heart-related events prior to Raw in Montreal, Lawler did acknowledge "chest discomfort" the weekend before his heart attack while touring in Aruba. He said it "wasn't really chest pains, but discomfort" for about four-to-five minutes. Lawler says it "felt a little different," and he wrote it off as indigestion. But, on the actual day of Raw, Lawler says he did not experience any discomfort.
Looking ahead to the future, Lawler says he's thought a lot about returning to wrestling, changing his schedule, and changing his diet. Lawler says WWE's doctor told him "this is going to have a major effect" on his wrestling schedule and it will be "months before even thinking about getting in the ring."
Lawler said it will become an internal battle because he did not have a dramatic cardiac event - he simply passed out and woke up in a hospital without really having the sense of a heart attack - so the lack of a dramatic event will make him think he can "get back to regular activities sooner than I should be."
Asked if he will wrestle again, though, Lawler emphatically replied, "Yeah, absolutely." He did not say whether he's had a conversation with WWE officials yet about whether they will clear him to wrestle again, though, which would limit Lawler to independent appearances.
Lawler said he mainly attributes the heart attack to genetics, but also recognizes his diet of fried food and needing to exercise more may have contributed. Lawler noted his father had seven heart attacks prior to dying at the age of 59 and his brother has had open heart surgery. He said he had faced the possibility that "probably something was going to happen," but his Memphis doctor told him that his lifestyle of no drinking, no smoking, and no drugs helped him avoid a serious "cardiac event."
Lawler, who was hooked up to a one-day heart monitor during the interview, noted he is currently being monitored with electrodes until 11:00 a.m. on Thursday. On Wednesday morning, his doctor performed a heart echo with an ultrasound, and the result was his heart "looked good and normal." The result indicated to his doctor that he doesn't need to see Lawler for another six weeks for a follow-up exam, which was a great sign.
Other wrestling-related notes:
- Concerning his potential return to WWE TV, Lawler was not asked when he will return to commentating, so it remains a question mark to be answered as his recovery unfolds.
- Lawler noted WWE CEO Vince McMahon sent the WWE corporate plane to Montreal to fly him home to Memphis on Monday. The plane was in Boston, where WWE held the Night of Champions PPV on Sunday.
- Lawler listed Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair as non-WWE talent who have reached out to him since his heart attack. He also said "everyone" from the WWE roster has sent him well-wishes.
