Report by James Caldwell, PWTorch assistant editor
Inside the Izod Center, Josh Mathews introduced Extreme Rules on WWE Network. Mathews said tonight will be "remarkable, shocking, astonishing, and...extreme." At the NBA on TNT studio location was Mathews along with Booker T, Sheamus, and Alex Riley. Booker was interrupted by loud "Yes!" chants in the crowd to begin the show.
The studio discussion shifted to hyping Hornswoggle vs. El Torito on the pre-show. Mathews said it's coming up...in a little bit. Meanwhile, "C-M-Punk" chants in the background. Mathews got serious shifting focus to the main PPV line-up, then introduced a video package on the Daniel Bryan vs. Kane feud. The next video package was on John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt, then WWE returned to the panel for another Punk chant in the background.
WWE cut to ringside, where a group of mini-announcers were at their own announce table. It was mini-Cole, mini-JBL, and mini-Lawler, complete with crowns and cowboy hats. A mini-ring announcer introduced the participants as a mini-referee stood by to officiate the match.
A - EL TORITO (w/Los Matadores) vs. HORNSWOGGLE (w/3MB) -- WeeLC match
Short jokes a-plenty to begin the match, with the main announcers Michael Cole, JBL, and Jerry Lawler chiming in periodically with short jokes. Torito splashed Swoggle and 3MB on the floor, then introduced a mini-chair. Suddenly, the ref was bumped by Jinder Mahal, but the ref shook it off, regrouped, and watched as more furniture was introduced. Swoggle ended up on top of a ladder and Torito moved out of the way on a splash. Torito then rolled up Swoggle for a two count. Suddenly, Cole fed to a break. Yes, a two-segment match here.
Back on the pre-show, 3MB was beating up Los Matadores ringside. One of the mini-announcers randomly said this match reminds him of Steamboat vs. Savage at WM3, also available on WWE Network. In the ring, Swoggle ran off a chair with a splash to Torito. Swoggle delivered a chair-aided Rolling Thunder, then Swoggle cleared the mini-announce table ringside. Swoggle placed Torito on the mini-table, then Swoggle climbed onto the ring apron, air-guitared, and splashed Torito through the table.
Back in the ring, Swoggle directed traffic getting 3MB to arrange some furniture for a follow-up attack. Swoggle told Heath Slater to hold Torito, then Swoggle missed a chair shot, the chair struck Slater, and Slater took a flat-back bump off the apron through tables on the floor. Back in the ring, Drew McIntyre and Mahal tried to help Swoggle superplex Torito, but Los Matadores blocked and sent everyone through tables and ladders on the floor.
Reset at 10:00. McIntyre tried to splash Torito with an over-the-top splash, but Torito moved and McIntyre crashed through the table. Back in the ring, Torito sent Swoggle crashing through a table with a springboard senton - the fourth table spot of the pre-show match. It was good for the pin and the win.
WINNER: Torito at 11:01. It's going to be tough for the PPV to follow this match with all of the weaponry and big spots, but kudos to Swoggle and Torito for taking advantage of their spotlight opportunity. If only WWE was this interested and committed to building up mid-card feuds.
Backstage: Zeb Colter and Jack Swagger were interviewed by Byron Saxton. Zeb cut off Saxton and said the triple-threat match tonight will have three slices of Americana - country-killing apathy from RVD, country-killing liars and slime from Paul Heyman and Cesaro, and a Real American, Jack Swagger. Zeb said they're getting out of this city as soon as the match is over, then asked the crowd to join him in shouting, "We the People."
Studio Panel: Mathews led the panel in a discussion of The Shield vs. Evolution six-man tag match to wrap up the pre-show.
