-Is it just me, or does the Smackdown opening music video slightly resemble and/or uses some of the same footage from the Main Event music video?
- BIG SHOW AND CHRIS JERICHO PROMO. Big Show started off by repeating over and over that Alberto Del Rio has never pinned him and now that he can’t duct-tape him to ropes, he is out of tricks and won’t walk out of New Orleans with the World Title. Chris Jericho interrupted and tells Show that he understands his anger. Show plugs Jericho’s upcoming projects in a sneaky way, and Jericho says that he is in the here and now. Jericho helps build up Big Show by reminiscing about their time as tag champions, then notes that no one has been in as many Chamber matches as he has, so if Big Show beats Del Rio on Sunday, then he can bet his last dollar that he will end up facing Jericho at WrestleMania!
Booker T - shockingly! - makes this confrontation into a match for later in the night. I think this was a pretty good segment with both guys building each other up and Big Show letting the fans know where they can see Jericho for the next few weeks. What they need to do better is develop a better way to book matches for the night other than using the tired General Manager making whoever is in the ring cutting a promo into a match.
-Backstage, Orton and Mark Henry had a quick face-to-face; neither man flinched and the crowd popped huge.
-A Main Event-style Mark Henry video package is played. I can’t say how much I love these videos. The video ended by saying that the Hall of Pain is now open again!
1 - RANDY ORTON vs. MARK HENRY
Back and forth match to start off, both men held their own and neither man could get an advantage on the other. The first time to my knowledge, it was explained why Mark Henry is the World’s Strongest Man. He squatted and deadlifted 900 pounds without the help of a squat suit. I never knew that! Orton escaped a World’s Strongest Slam and hit all his signature spots, but he couldn’t connect with the RKO.
Outside of the ring, Orton got a hold of a chair and he laid out Henry with it to cause a DQ. Orton kept up the assault until Henry blocked a shot and then put Orton down with the World’s Strongest Slam! Both men looked good here - Orton brought it to Henry, but at the end of the day Henry stood tall. Since coming back, no one has been able to stop Mark Henry. He is by far my favorite going into the Chamber match on Sunday!
-Backstage, Mark Henry ran into Matt Striker. He yanked away his microphone and told him that he isn’t interviewing him, he is going to listen. Henry said that he has been at home for nine months stressing about his return, but now the Hall of Pain is open and on Sunday five men will be locked in with him. Henry said that those five men better bring law enforcement with them because no one can stop his Road to WrestleMania! Awesome promo from Henry! It stated what his motivation and he came off like a monster.
-A Shield video package is shown. It was the same thing that was shown the last week, except it ended with Cena, Sheamus, and Ryback coming through the crowd and running off The Shield.
2 - LAYLA vs. TAMINA
I guess if there is going to be a Divas Championship match on Sunday between Kaitlyn and Tamina, they might as well have one of them wrestle on TV before that happens! Nice spot in the match where Layla was on the edge of the ring and Tamina pulled the apron out when Layla went to jump off. Layla got trapped between the ring and the apron and sold like she blew out her knee. Layla came back with some offense, but Tamina ultimately put the former Divas Champion away with a Samoan Drop and Superfly Splash! Not a bad match, it was passable.
THE ROCK PROMO. Huge ovation for Rocky in Little Rock coming out without the WWE Title. Rock starts out by telling Punk that by taking the title for six days, he traded it for the ass-kicking of his life on Sunday. Rock called Punk a spoiled little boy who needs someone like Paul Heyman around to give him hugs and tell him everything will be okay! Great line.
Punk and Heyman interrupt via satellite and accuse Rock of committing grand larceny by taking a title he didn’t deserve at Royal Rumble. Then, like a B-Level Bond villain, Punk reveals his game plan for Sunday – he is trying to make Rock mad enough to get DQ’ed so Punk can have his title back. The Rock intensely tells Punk that he threw everything he had at The Rock at the Rumble, but at the end of the night The Rock still got the job done and on Sunday the exact same thing will happen again. The Rock vows to go to WrestleMania as Champion and headline the show before throwing down his microphone. This was another good back and forth, showing these guys have great chemistry.
3MB make for annoying heels that the fans love to boo. They are obnoxious and have a gimmick that adds to their heel act. Brodus and Tensai make for duo that has some comedy to them, but they also have an aggressive side to them. I think this is the wrong role for them, but they are making the most of it and barely make it work.
Post-match, The Shield stormed the ring and they took out Tensai and Clay pretty handily. The Shield gave Brodus Clay the triple powerbomb and then called for a microphone. Dean Ambrose tells everyone that Sunday will look just the same, just different people being beaten down by The Shield. Short, but sweet appearance by The Shield.
4 - CODY RHODES vs. THE MIZ
The Miz is still selling the attack from Cesaro on last Monday's Raw by wrapping his shoulder. Cody worked the shoulder the whole match, but The Miz applied the Figure-Four out of nowhere to pick up the win. Not much to this match - Miz showed his resiliency, Cody showed that no one behind the scenes really cares about him anymore, and the match left the burning question of whether Miz will be 100 percent on Sunday when he faces Antonio Cesaro for the U.S. Title.
5 - ZACK RYDER vs. JACK SWAGGER
Wasn’t this an upper-card feud a year ago? Now Zack Ryder is enhancement talent for Swagger’s benefit. Zeb Coulter’s back-story is that he served in Vietnam with Jack Swagger's dad! Swagger looks so heelish in all-black ring gear! Swagger clipped the knee and then applied the Anklelock – now called The Patriot Act - to pick up the win.
After the match, Zeb preached about his America and the difference between being a great American like Coulter and Swagger or an American like Zack Ryder who only cares about his hair and tan. I wonder if Zeb Coulter's character is based off my grandpa or one of my uncles after a few beers...
-Matt Striker is with Alberto Del Rio backstage. He mentions how Del Rio has never pinned Big Show, and Del Rio responds by saying he is World Champion, which is all that matters. Del Rio kept asking Ricardo questions about what will happen on Sunday and Ricardo always answered with “Si” then chants it as both men walked off. Isn’t this blatantly ripping off Daniel Bryan's catchphrase?
6 - BIG SHOW vs. CHRIS JERICHO
Big Show dominated most of the match, and Jericho occasionally made short lived comebacks when he took advantage of Show’s mistakes. Jericho looked to be on his way to victory with the Walls of Jericho, but Show fought out and nailed Y2J away with a WMD for the victory. Better match than I expected and for being such a short match, but it had a good pace to it with good selling from Jericho. After the match, Alberto came out and had a stare down from the ramp with Big Show.
