[HOUR ONE]
-Joe Tessitore introduced the show as they showed an aerial view of Boston, Mass. He talked about the Celtics and Bruins championships. They showed arrival clips of CM Punk, Kevin Owens, Carmelo Hayes, Baron Corbin, Tiffany Stratton, and Jacy Jayne as Tessitore hyped their appearances.
-Mark Nash introduced Smackdown GM Nick Aldis. He stood mid-ring and announced Chelsea Green suffered a broken orbital bone last week. He said he’s come to a decision regarding her status. He invited her to the ring. She walked out, sporting a black eye. Tessitore said she said if she didn’t have bad luck, she’d have no luck at all. She wore her WWE Women’s Title belt. Fans chanted, “Chelsea! Chelsea!” Aldis said there is no easy way to it given how hard she has worked and how much the win at Summerslam meant to her, but he said that after consulting with medical, he can’t let her wrestle with a broken eye socket.
She pleaded with him not to say what he’s about to say. Aldis said he hates this part of his job, but it is part of his job. He asked her relinquish the WWE Championship. She said she knew it was too good to be true when she won the match. She said every time something good and magical happens to her in the business, it’s followed by something devastating. “That’s just my story, isn’t it?” she said. “It’s just Chelsea Green, the comic relief, the perfect opponent for rest of the other girls. Never the champion. Never the QB1.” She said she’s skipped personal events and had broken bones and put her face through birthday cakes and had the entire world laugh at her as she was thrown in dumpsters.
She said it was all worth it and she said to herself recently, “I made it!” Chelsea said Aldis should understand because the entire world applauded him in his return to the ring. She said it doesn’t matter what the public thinks about them, but rather what they think about themselves. She said that Aldis was a champion and his wife was a champion. “Until someone takes this off of me, this is mine,” she said. “I thought you, of all people, would understand that.” She handed the belt to him and left the ring in a huff.
Aldis yelled, “Chelsea, wait!” He said he thinks he’s doing the right thing as a GM, but as a man, he doesn’t care what Medical says. He said he’d give her 30 days to get cleared and get a facemask and do whatever it takes, but he agrees that until someone takes it from her, it’s hers. He handed the belt back to her. Chelsea held the belt up and cried and smiled.
Gunther’s music played and he walked out. He entered the ring and said he knows Triple H has him a short leash, but he wanted to ask him directly why he gave him a short leash at Summerslam. Aldis said this is business for his office, not then and there. Gunther insulted Green climbing a ladder. Gunther said he wrestled both nights, and one night, he made a man tap out right in front of his family. He asked why he added Kevin Owens to his match. Aldis said he didn’t add Kevin to his match, “I added you to Kevin’s match.” Aldis said they had been negotiating Kevin’s return to Smackdown for months, and Gunther being added was a favor to him. “You’re welcome by the way,” he said. “Sorry you couldn’t get the job done.” Chelsea laughed. Gunther took exception and told her to do him a favor and shut up. Fans booed.
Chelsea told him to go ahead and have his cute little tantrum and “stroke that tiny, little male ego.” She said that’s all he has left after Summerslam. She said when she looks around the ring, she only sees one champion. When Gunther took a step toward her, Matt Cardona ran to the ring and got in Gunther’s face. Gunther said he could call Chelsea every slur in the world and there is nothing he could do to him. As Cardona left with Chelsea at her urging, Gunther said, “Ha ha, like a dog listening to his owner.” Cardona jumped Gunther and threw a barrage of punches. Gunther rolled to the floor and looked stunned. Gunther told Aldis to do something about that as they cut to a break.
(Keller’s Analysis: Chelsea entered into a dangerous self-pitying zone that was a bit off-putting, but more than made up for it overall by conveying how much she wanted to be champion and stood up for herself in case there was any way to change Aldis’s mind. And there was. I like giving her 30 days even if the point of the Interim Title was to have an active champion. Aldis was good here. Gunther, of course, was a great fit here for making it about himself and demeaning Chelsea. Cardona had to come out when he did and he stood up for his wife well.) [c]
(1) GUNTHER vs. MATT CARDONA
The match was joined in progress after the break 17 minutes into the hour. When Gunther stopped Cardona’s early momentum and beat him down at ringside, Chelsea yelled at him. Cardona rolled into the ring, but was met by a Gunther clothesline. Gunther turned his attention to Chelsea. She leaped onto the ring apron. As the ref told Chelsea to get down, Cardona kicked him between his legs and then landed a Rough Rider for a two count that popped the crowd. Gunther recovered and powerbombed Cardona twice and then put him in a Boston Crab for the win. Barrett said Gunther sent a loud and clear message to stay out of his way.
WINNER: Gunther in around 7:00.
(Keller’s Analysis: Cardona put up a good fight, and the near fall after the low-blow was dramatic, but I’m still glad they didn’t give Cardona the win even though he was fighting for his wife’s honor and delivered a low blow. Gunther is just too important.)
-Nia Jax and Lash Legend walked out. Jax told Chelsea she has a ticking clock. Jax said she got screwed out of her title match at Summerslam, so she wanted a title match. She said if she doesn’t get what she wants, she has a history of breaking faces. Tiffany charged out for the save, but she was beaten down by Jax and Lash. As the heel duo left the ring, Chelsea checked on Tiffany.
-They went to Tessitore and Wade Barrett at ringside. They commented on a clip of Alexa Bliss and Tatum Paxley coming to the ring last week to help Charlotte get a win.
-Backstage, Charlotte hugged Bliss and thanked her for kicking Michin and B-Fab’s butt last Friday. Charlotte said it was a nice one-time cute thing. Alexa said Tatum reminds her of herself and she has a surprise for them. The camera turned to Paxley in a black room with candles and photos of Charlotte and Alexa all over the walls. Bliss asked Charlotte nervously, “Don’t you just love it, Charlotte?” Charlotte apprehensively entered the room and said, “Groovy.” [c]
-Tessitore plugged that fans could get their name printed on the ring canvas on Saturday Night’s Main Event.
-A clip aired of Randy Orton interfering in the CM Punk vs. Cody Rhodes match two weeks ago at Summerslam and then their segment last Friday on Smackdown.
-Cody approached Nick Aldis backstage (who was being filmed backstage for no discernible reason with two producers). Cody wanted a match against Orton. Aldis suggested Saturday Night’s Main Event. Cody said anytime, anywhere works for him. Sami Zayn showed up and complained about his match turning from a two-way to a three-way to a four-way. Cody had enough of Sami and angrily told him he’s had enough of him. “Let’s do something about it,” he seethed at Sami. Sami said the last time they were in the ring with him, he did something no one else has done lately. He listed big name opponents, then said he’s the only one who pinned him without shenanigans.
When Cody left, Sami told Aldis that of course Cody challenged him when he couldn’t wrestle because of his injured left wrist. Aldis said he was hurt as Summerslam and he made a choice, so he is offering him a choice tonight. He said if he beats Cody tonight, he can face the winner of CM Punk and Cody Rhodes.
-Carmelo Hayes made his entrance. [c]
-Tessitore plugged WWE Unreal.
(2) BARON CORBIN vs. CARMELO HAYES – US Title match
As Corbin made his enterance, Hayes leaped over the top rope and flipped onto him. Corbin shoved Hayes and rolled into the ring. The ref called for the bell as Hayes entered the ring. The bell rang 43 minutes into the hour. They cut to a double-box break with Corbin in control at ringside after throwing Hayes into the ringpost and into the time keeper’s area. [c/db]
Hayes landed a frog splash at 7:00 for a near fall. Corbin landed a Deep Six a minute later for a near fall. Hayes made a comeback and climbed to the top rope. Corbin knocked him to the floor. Corbin then landed End of Days for the win. Barrett said Corbin “once again used debatable tactics.”
WINNER: Corbin in 10:00 to retain the US Title.
-Afterward, Trick Williams made his entrance. Fans sang “Whoop that Trick!” Lil’ Yachty came up behind Corbin and hit him with a kendo stick. Corbin no-sold it and went after Yachty. Trick entered the ring and gave him a Trick Shot.
-They showed Tiffany in the locker room wincing a bit when Chelsea thanked her for her help earlier. She said she didn’t want her to get injured before her title match. Tiffany said she’d be fine. Chelsea asked if she was sure. Tiffany assured her she was. [c]
[HOUR TWO]
-Kevin Owens made his entrance. A “CM Punk!” chant broke out. Then Punk’s music played and he came out. Punk told KO to go ahead and give the people what they want because the floor is his. KO just smirked. Punk then said, “Is it great to be alive in Boston, Massachusets or what?” KO said last week Punk said things from a distance with his back turned, after they had just been face to face, to call him essentially a fat slob. Punk asked if he thinks he wouldn’t say that to his face. KO said a lot of people don’t know this, but their story began 20 years ago. Punk told him to enlighten the people.
KO said 20 years ago, he and “Phil” wrestled for the same indy group. He said Phil was the top guy and he was just trying to make a name for himself. He said Phil berated him and insulted him and screamed at him in the locker room. Punk asked if he’s held onto that for years. KO said he doesn’t like him for a lot of reasons, including how he’s treated his friends. Punk asked him to be specific. KO said he thinks he’s talking about three people, but every friend of his hates him because they see through him. “Being hated by losers is the price I pay for not being one of them,” he said. KO said that’s a perfect example of why he despises him.
KO said people in the back look up to him because he came back and made amends. He said he, though, will never like him. He said everything Punk says and does is performative. He insisted Punk look at him. KO said he had no choice but to make everything right because he’s screwed up everywhere else he went. KO said he was going to step back because his breath was a little rough.
KO said he did well for himself for 12 years before his injury. He said he won titles including the Universal Title. He said he main evented WrestleMania against “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. Punk said he did, but then he laughed. “You did, didn’t you?” he said. “Congratulations.” He said he was happy for him. KO said that’s true. Punk asked, “Do you honestly think you’d have been afforded those opportunities if I was still here.” He asked if he thought he’d be picked before him.
KO asked him to say why he thinks that. He asked Punk if he’s a fat indy slob, a fan on the wrong side of the guard rail. “Just say it to my face?” he said. Punk asked if that’s what he thinks of him or what Owens thinks of himself. Punk said he’s there as the Undisputed Champion of World Wrestling Entertainment. Punk said he’d be foolish to take him lightly next week in Toronto. He said he sees a guy who speaks two languages whereas he can barely speak one. He said he also sees someone who doesn’t put in the work to be one percent better each year. He said that makes KO stupid and that’s why when he looks at him, he sees a bum.
Punk said he evolved. He called himself a shape-shifter. He said if KO did half the work he did, maybe KO could have avoided the Goldberg spear that ended the last time he had a belt around his waist. KO said he spent his entire career trying to avoid being anything like him. KO said Punk got all the money and titles, but he’s convinced when he goes home, he hates what he sees in the mirror. He said he, on the other hand, is the same person he met 20 years ago. He said “this fat indy loser” is facing him for the WWE Title next week. KO said Punk couldn’t avoid the Roman Reigns spear at WrestleMania, so if he was more like him, it wouldn’t have worked.
Punk said when he looks at KO, he sees a version of himself 20 years ago who is stubborn and loud and thinks he’s always the smartest guy in the room. KO asked if it bothers him he never sought out his advice or guidance. KO said he’s regretted for 20 years not punching him in the mouth in that locker room. Punk said the only thing between them is air and opportunity. He asked him to do it now. KO said if he did that 20 years ago, he knows Punk would have ruined his career. He said he won’t do it now, because next week in Toronto, he doesn’t just get to punch him in the face, but since he waited 20 years he can wait 7 more days and beat his bitch ass for the WWE Title.
Punk said 20 years ago, KO thought he could talk disrespectfully and get away with it. He said he can wait 7 days, because he’ll put his fat ass to sleep and then he’ll be looking up at him.
(Keller’s Analysis: I just don’t know. I mean, it was just uncomfortable watching them bicker like that if you are fans of both. I just don’t think most fans tune into pro wrestling to listen to their favorite wrestlers tear each other down for 15 minutes.)
-Tessitore said there were so many layers to dig through. He plugged Punk vs. Owens next Friday on Smackdown.
-Finn Balor said last week he needed time to cool off, and he said he gets why he added KO and Sami now. Gunther walked up to Aldis and said he made him wrestle in street clothes earlier. Aldis said he interrupted him again. Gunther asked how. Aldis said he was talking to Balor. Gunther said he doesn’t see Balor, but he sees a shadow of Balor. Balor called him a prick and said he’d happily beat his ass and show him who the real Finn Balor is. Gunther turned and left.
-Priest’s ring entrance began. [c]
(3) DAMIEN PRIEST & R-TRUTH vs. THE WAR RAIDERS vs. THE MFTS (Tama Tonga & Talla Tonga w/Haku) – WWE Tag Team Title match
The match was joined in progress 27 minutes into the hour.
Priest charged at the War Raiders at ringside, but Ivar caught him and powerslammed him through the ringside barricade. Tama knocked Erik through the announce desk. Back in the ring, Truth landed two shoulder tackles and a side slam. He did the You Can’t See Me routine and landed a fistdrop. Tama raked Truth’s eyes. Tama shoved Truth into Erik, the Talla gave him a high assisted powerbomb for the win.
WINNERS: Talla & Tama in around 7:00 to win the WWE Tag Team Titles.
-Fatal Influence made their way toward the ring.
(4) TIFFANY STRATTON vs. JACY JAYNE (w/Falon Henley, Lainey Reid) – US Title match
The bell rang 40 minutes into the hour. They cut to an early double-box break.[c/db]
During the break, Jayne shoved Tiffany off the top rope. Chelsea came to ringside to check on her. Tiffany rallied, but both ended up down and were slow to get up.
Tiffany landed a rolling senton, but when she went for the Prettiest Moonsault Ever, Jayne lifted her knees and scored a two count. Tiffany lifted her for a rolling senton. She was setting up a top rope move, but decided to leap onto Reid and Henley to stop them from going after Chelsea. When she returned to the ring, Jayne hit a Rolling Encore for the win. Tessitore said the look on Chelsea’s face said it all.
WINNER: Jayne in 9:00 to win the US Title.
-Backstage, Cathy Kelley interviewed Jade Cargill, B-Fab, and Michin. Jade said, “Line them all up, I’ll knock them all down.” B-Fab said they’re looking forward to giving Tatum a proper welcome to their show.
-Cody made his entrance. [c]
-Sami began his entrance. Randy Orton jumped Cody from behind. “What the hell is Randy doing here?” asked Barrett. Orton gave Cody a draping DDT. He got a mixed reaction from the fans. He pounded the mat with his forearms and set up an RKO. Cody blocked it and set up CrossRhodes. Orton raked his eyes and blocked it. He then rammed Cody into the ringside steps. He lifted the top of the steps and bashed Cody with them. Sami was freaking out at ringside.
Cody fought back when they began to brawl in the crowd. Orton took over at ringside and put Cody on the ringside steps which were leaning against the announce desk. He then picked up a chair. Aldis, standing three feet away, just yelled at Orton. Cody kicked Orton between his legs from underneath and then bashed Orton with a chair. The crowd response was muted and muddled as Cody played to the crowd with a chair and Orton winced. WWE producers pulled the chair away from Cody. Tessitore said it was a wild scene in Boston as the show ended.
(Keller’s Analysis: Did Orton know there was only about four minutes left in their allotted time on USA Network and so he decided to cut off the match before it began?)
