Then highlights aired of Cody beating Jey Uso on Smackdown to earn his WWE Title match tonight.<\/p>\n<p>-They cut to the exterior of Chicago and then the arena earlier with fans lined up and cheering. Then they showed wrestlers arriving starting with Oba Femi, then The Judgment Day (JD McDonagh picked his nose with the Danhausen Knicks jersey), and The Street Profits interacting with fans.<\/p>\n<p>-They showed Sami Zayn arriving in a convertible sports car holding up his WWE Title belt gleefully. He was shaking hands with staff backstage greeting him. He then met Cody who was standing by. Sami told Cody that he isn&#8217;t going to just swoop in and take back what he thinks is his rightful spot. Cody said he actually just planned to tell him good luck, but he said he&#8217;s not wrong about how the match is going to go. Sami walked away and Gunther attacked Cody from behind. Gunther powerbombed him through a table. Gunther turned and told Sami he is a disgrace and a fluke of a champion. He said he should have never won the title in the first place, and he&#8217;s coming for him. He then smashed Cody in Sami&#8217;s car door. Cody had a blood colored stream running down the side of his face.<\/p>\n<p>-They went to Corey Graves and Michael Cole at ringside. Graves was panicked over how that could affect the scheduled title match.<\/p>\n<p>-Seth Rollins made his entrance next. He soaked up cheers and said he loves the arena. A &#8220;CM Punk!&#8221; chant broke out. He said there was the obligatory chant for Punk. He told them to get it out of their system, but he couldn&#8217;t care less about him at the moment. Some boos. He said it&#8217;s not his business right now. He said his business is beating Roman Reigns for the World Title and &#8220;continuing to own&#8221; him. Seth told fans that Roman didn&#8217;t show up because either he didn&#8217;t think it did anything to make it work for him or they didn&#8217;t pay him enough. &#8220;That&#8217;s just who Roman Reigns is,&#8221; he said. &#8220;That&#8217;s who he&#8217;s always been.&#8221; He said Roman has been the chosen one from day one, and no one wants to hold him accountable.<\/p>\n<p>Seth said when The Shield debuted, there were three of them, but it was made abundantly clear that Roman was the chosen one to be on the marquee and be the big star and headline all the big PPVs. He said it didn&#8217;t matter if Roman could cut promos or wrestle his way out of a paper bag, it was always going to be Roman.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Keller&#8217;s Analysis: The crowd was just dead; what nonsense meta downer of a promo that doesn&#8217;t do anything for anybody, including Seth. This is yet another segment that puts out grievances based on meta-stuff instead of establishing that main events and pushes are a result of winning matches. It&#8217;s another segment of one babyface tearing into another in a meta-way that undercuts the reasons to admire and root for the other babyface. And it came across as bitter and playing a victim. All that turned the crowd on him. If everyone involved in pro wrestling stories behind the scenes and on camera got off social media, the product would be so much better. They&#8217;re attempting to cater to a subset of the audience, but ironically doing so in a way that they don&#8217;t actually enjoy when it&#8217;s part of the actual core product, I&#8217;d argue.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Seth said it broke something in him to have everything he dreamed of achieving getting handed off to somebody else who he didn&#8217;t feel deserved it. He said when he broke up The Shield, it was to try to catch up to Roman. He said he cashed in his Money in the Bank against Roman to stay close to him. He said he thought they were running the same race, but he was wrong. He said a few years ago, Roman admitted that he worked ten-times less than he did, but made ten-times more than he did. &#8220;He said that bullshit with such bravado, it made me want to puke,&#8221; he said. Seth said it was never about the money for him and living on some mansion. He said for him, the reward was the work. &#8220;It was the hustle, it was the grind,&#8221; he said.<\/p><div id=\"pwtor-3549379207\" class=\"pwtor-content-1 pwtor-entity-placement\"><!-- Tag ID: pwtorchcom_test_300x600 -->\r\n<div align=\"center\" data-freestar-ad=\"__336x280 __300x600\" id=\"pwtorchcom_test_300x600\">\r\n  <script data-cfasync=\"false\" type=\"text\/javascript\">\r\n    freestar.config.enabled_slots.push({ placementName: \"pwtorchcom_test_300x600\", slotId: \"pwtorchcom_test_300x600\" });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Seth said Roman has to beat him at Summerslam. He said Roman is going to try to prove what he has been trying to prove the last 15 years, which is to justify that he&#8217;s not a fraud. He said he needs to beat Reigns just as much, as he needs to prove to his five year old self that he can achieve greatness through hard work, sacrifice, and dreams, you can still achieve greatness. LA Knight&#8217;s music interrupted him. Knight entered the ring and said he wasn&#8217;t going to let Seth bore people to sleep the second week in a row &#8220;with the same old trash.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>(Keller&#8217;s Analysis: It&#8217;s like the ghost of Pat McAfee live on with everyone tearing everyone down and expecting fans to enjoy it, made worse by it being babyfaces doing it to one another.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He told Seth that they both failed to win the King of the Ring, but unlike Seth, he&#8217;s not claiming to be next in line for the World Title &#8220;just for nostalgia sake.&#8221; He got the crowd cheering as he asked Seth what he&#8217;s actually the greatest at. Knight called them the two biggest vomits and Seth&#8217;s main skill is manipulating numbers to hold guys like him down. He hit a crescendo that said you can&#8217;t stop him because he must rise. Seth asked, &#8220;Are you done?&#8221; Fans roared with a chant of &#8220;LA Knight!&#8221; Seth told Knight, &#8220;I don&#8217;t like ya&#8217;, but I respect ya&#8217;.&#8221; Seth said his time will come, but he has to focus on getting the title back he never lost at Summerslam. He said after he wins the title, Knight can be the first challenger he puts in the dirt.<\/p>\n<p>As Seth left and Knight stood his ground in the ring, Cole said Knight &#8220;shooting his shot tonight.&#8221; Jimmy Uso then came up behind Knight and superkicked him in the face. He yelled at Knight to not talk about his family. Cole said it was payback for last week.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Keller&#8217;s Analysis: LA Knight was tremendous here representing himself, but this narrative of talking about pro wrestling on the pro wrestling show as if wrestlers are largely successful due to pushes and number manipulating feels so counter-productive to me. Plus, is anyone a good person at all? I suppose Knight was good here, but Seth,)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>-Raw GM Adam Pearce was yelling at Gunther. Gunther told Pearce that his decision forced his hand. Smackdown GM Nick Aldis walked up and got in Gunther&#8217;s face. Gunther said Aldis failed as a wrestler. Pearce asked Aldis if he&#8217;s trying to go on permanent leave. Pearce said the business is bigger than his ego. They yelled at each other. Aldis said Pearce did a terrible job, as Cody now might be hurt badly.<\/p>\n<p>-The Street Profits made their entrance. Cole said they&#8217;re still not sure the status of the World Title match tonight. [c]<\/p>\n<p>-Jackie Redmond was about to interview The Vision, when Paul Heyman walked up to them. He told Breakker he couldn&#8217;t take out Seth. He told Theory he couldn&#8217;t even take out Joe Hendry. He told him to &#8220;come back with something worthy of your Wise Man or don&#8217;t come back to me at all.&#8221; Cole said there is big-time pressure on The Vision, and they still want council from Heyman. Graves said that&#8217;s never been Heyman&#8217;s strong suit. (Huh?)<\/p>\n<p><strong>(1) THE STREET PROFITS (Montez Ford &amp; Angelo Dawkins) vs. THE VISION (Austin Theory &amp; Bron Breakker w\/Logan Paul) &#8211; World Tag Team Title match<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Vision made their entrance next. The bell rang 33 minutes into the hour. At 2:00 Breakker ran the ropes fast and took down Dawkins as they cut to a break. [c]<\/p>\n<p>Cole touted a crowd of over 12,000. Ford hot-tagged in and leaped off the top rope at Theory and then took Breakker down with a kick to the gut and an enzuigiri. Dawkins took Theory down with a spinning neckbreaker at 7:00. Both were down and slow to get up. Logan was about to give brass knuckles to Theory. The ref caught him, but he had a second set of knuckles which he tossed to Breakker. Breakker was about to KO Dawkins, but Dawkins knocked them out of his hands. Ford then landed his obligatory running flip dive over the top turnbuckle onto Breakker. Dawkins was about to use the knuckles against Theory, but Maxxine Dupri entered and gave Dawkins a low blow from behind. Theory then scored the pin.<\/p>\n<p>Cole said he thought Durpi dumped Theory last week. She leaped into his arms and they kissed. Theory carried her toward the back. Cole said she gave Theory an ultimatum last week &#8220;and I guess we know how that worked out.&#8221; Cole said, &#8220;They responded to the pressure tonight, thanks to Maxxine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>WINNERS: Theory &amp; Breakker in 9:00 to regain the World Tag Team Titles.<\/p>\n<p>-They cut backstage to a doctor checking on Cody. Pearce asked the doc for some good news. The doc said he cannot sign off on Cody wrestling tonight. He said he needed scans at the hospital. Cody insisted he could wrestle, but he looked rough. Cole said things are dire for Cody&#8217;s title match.<\/p>\n<p>-They showed Sol Ruca warming up backstage. [c]<\/p>\n<p>-Logan was giving a celebration speech to Breakker, Theory, and Dupri. Heyman walked up to them and said that was the first step, but it was only the first step. He said at least someone got something accomplished tonight. Theory said, &#8220;Thank you, Wise Man.&#8221; Heyman said he was talking to Maxxine, not Theory. They got in their SUV and left. Otis and Akira Tozawa walked up behind the SUV as it sped away and looked crestfallen.<\/p>\n<p>-They went to Cole and Theory at ringside. They commented on Liv Morgan, Roxanne Perez, and Raquel Rodriguez attacking Iyo Sky last week.<\/p>\n<p>-Liv told Raquel they have all the momentum. She said they&#8217;ll do everything in their power to help her win the IC Title. Raquel said the title is as good as hers and she&#8217;ll rip it away from Sol. JD said she&#8217;s ready. [c]<\/p>\n<p>-Graves announced a no. 1 contendership gauntlet match for a shot at the IC Title next week with Ethan Page, Rusev, Je&#8217;Von Evans, Dominik Mysterio, Joe Hendry, Chad Gable, and Dragon Lee.<\/p>\n<p>-Redmond interviewed Penta backstage. She asked him about the field. He said he&#8217;s very excited. Ethan and Rusev interrupted him. Ethan said he has taken Rey Mysterio out. Rusev said Ethan crushed him. Dragon Lee told him not to disparage Rey. Rusev said he should learn English before he crushes him. Gable then walked up to Rusev. Ethan told Rusev they should go negotiate with Pearce to get a tag amtch with Dragon and Gable later. Penta told them to go out with him later.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(2) SOL RUCA vs. RAQUEL RODRIGUEZ &#8211; Intercontinental Title match<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The bell rang 58 minutes into the hour.<\/p>\n<h3>[HOUR TWO]<\/h3>\n<p>Raquel tried to trip Sol on the ring apron, but Sol cartwheeled and then leaped onto Raquel at ringside with a corkscrew dive. Cole noted these two had not faced each other one-on-one before. Raquel landed a lariat for a one count. They cut to a break at 4:00. [c]<\/p>\n<p>Cole continued to talk about how the scheduled World Title match might not happen as scheduled. Raquel and Liv came to ringside and interfered, leading to Raquel scoring a near fall at 9:00. Raquel sat up looking shocked and dejected. Iyo Sky&#8217;s music played, and she dove onto Perez a ringside, then took Liv down with a kick. Fans chanted, &#8220;Iyo!&#8221; Iyo landed a moonsault onto both Liv and Perez. Sol caught a distracted Raquel with a Soul Snatcher for the win. Cole said it couldn&#8217;t have happened to a nicer group of people.<\/p>\n<p>WINNER: Sol in 10:00.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Keller&#8217;s Analysis: So how are viewers supposed to believe WWE knew to play Sky&#8217;s music right before she attacked Liv and Perez from the crowd?)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>-A video package aired on Oba Femi&#8217;s decision to face Brock Lesnar instead of going after a world title at Summerslam. [c]<\/p>\n<p>-Cole threw to a preview of WWE Unreal, season 3.<\/p>\n<p>-Heyman stood mid-ring and said Oba Femi saunters to the ring and acts like he owns the place. He said the pain Oba has already suffered at the hands of Lesnar is nothing compared to what he&#8217;ll experience in the Hell in a Cell. He said Oba has inspired Lesnar and compelled the Beast to emerge. He said he has motivated Lesnar. He said Oba has made the biggest mistake of his life by accepting the challenge of Lesnar. He threw down the mic and was going to leave when Oba&#8217;s music played.<\/p>\n<p>Oba entered the ring and said Heyman loves to talk, so he decided to give him a face to talk to. Heyman said he learned last week, &#8220;Talk shit, get hit.&#8221; He said he talks facts. He said he&#8217;s valuable because he prevents people from making bad mistakes. Heyman gave Oba credit for showing the world that Lesnar is beatable. He said in Italy, Lesnar proved Oba is beatable too (with a low-blow). Heyman said they now wrestle in the third match in their trilogy to find out who goes on to be the unbeatable Superstar. (Didn&#8217;t Heyman said they already proved they&#8217;re both beatable?)<\/p>\n<p>Heyman talked up Lesnar&#8217;s resume including UFC accomplishments. He said there&#8217;s no one who fights in a cage like Lesnar. He said Lesnar beat Undertaker, whom he said invented Hell in a Cell, twice. He called HIAC the Brocktagon. He said Lesnar is the bringer of pain the Beast you cannot beat and the mountain Oba cannot climb. Heyman threw down the mic.<\/p>\n<p>Oba lifted the mic. Fans chanted, &#8220;Oba! Oba!&#8221; Oba said his client Lesnar showed up last week. After weeks and weeks of calling him out to no avail, he finally showed up, which tells him every word he said got to him. He said now he can pretend he doesn&#8217;t watch the show, but he fact that he showed up, he definitely watches the show. He said Heyman is there to &#8220;do your usual damage control.&#8221; He said he&#8217;s writing checks Lesnar probably cannot cash. He said he&#8217;s not an advocate, but rather &#8220;just a mouth.&#8221; He said mouths need to be fed, but how can feed if you have no hand. He said he&#8217;s out there telling everyone about Lesnar&#8217;s accolades, but Undertaker and Randy Couture aren&#8217;t Oba Femi.<\/p>\n<p>He said he&#8217;s going to beat Lesnar in Minneapolis in front of his friends, his wife, his children. He said you have to walk through hell in order to get to heaven. He told Heyman to tell his client that he will see him in hell. Heyman looked shaken and retreated to ringside.<\/p>\n<p>-Redmond interviewed Sami backstage. She said he&#8217;s supposed to face Cody, but Cody is no longer able to compete. Sami asked, &#8220;He&#8217;s really out?&#8221; He smiled. Fans chanted &#8220;CM Punk!&#8221; Sami said he and Cody have their differences, but he&#8217;s the last good guy. He said he was looking forward to testing himself against QB1. He said it apparently wasn&#8217;t meant to be. He said he wasn&#8217;t sure why he was defending his title on Raw in the first place, so he&#8217;d just head on over to Smackdown. Pearce said he promised Chicago a title match. He told Sami to prepare to defend his title tonight. There was a brief chant for Punk.<\/p>\n<p>-Gable made his entrance. [c]<\/p>\n<p>-They showed El Grande Americano at the World Cup game between Mexico and England. Cole plugged some merch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(3) CHAD GABLE &amp; DRAGON LEE vs. ETHAN PAGE &amp; RUSEV<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ethan and Rusev attacked Gable and Dragon in the ring before the bell. The ref ridiculously rewarded the heel pre-match attack by immediately calling for the bell 39 minutes into the hour. Gable launched Dragon onto Rusev and Ethan at ringside at 2:00. [c]<\/p>\n<p>Rusev was in control of Gable afterward. Cole said Pearce told Sami he is defending his title tonight, but the question is against whom. Ethan battled Dragon for a while. Rusev and Ethan tried to double-suplex Dragon, but Ethan intervened. Dragon then rolled up Rusev for a two count. Rusev caught a flying Dragon with a uranage and then applied the Accolade. Dragon tapped out.<\/p>\n<p>WINNERS: Rusev &amp; Ethan in 9:00.<\/p>\n<p>-Rusev held on after the win. Gable lifted Rusev for a German suplex to escape, but Ethan intervened. Rusev put Gable in an Accoldade. Hendry ran out for the save. He gave Ethan a fallaway slam and then kipped up. Rusev caught Hendry with a Machka Kick. Ethan then gave him the Egoplex. Rusev put him in an Accolade. Referees and officials ran in to try to pry Rusev off as Hendry cried out in pain. Rusev eventually let go.<\/p>\n<p>-They went to Cole and Graves at ringside. Cole plugged Money in the Bank on Oct. 10 in New Orleans, La.<\/p>\n<p>-Redmond caught up with Jimmy Uso as he was leaving the arena. She asked what kind of message he was trying to send. He said it&#8217;s time for him to step up. Knight walked up to Jimmy aggressively, but Jacob Fatu knocked Knight down.<\/p>\n<p>-They showed Pearce on the phone telling someone this was the third time he called. [c]<\/p>\n<p>-Cole hyped Summerslam.<\/p>\n<p>-A vignette aired with Bayley lamenting what Lyra Valkyria did to her.<\/p>\n<p>-Nick Aldis walked up to Pearce and told him he secured a new opponent for Sami. JD said he&#8217;ll dance on his head in front of his fans. Dom said Danhausen can fix it if he gives them back their money and undoes his curse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(4) SAMI ZAYN vs. CM PUNK &#8211; WWE Title match<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sami made his entrance. Fans chanted &#8220;CM Punk!&#8221; Then they cut to a garage door opening and behind it stood Punk. He walked in the back halls to no music and then his music played as he walked onto the stage and to the ring. Cole said Sami appeared shocked. &#8220;We are all shocked here tonight,&#8221; he said. He said this is Punk&#8217;s return after the Match of the Year candidate against Reigns at WrestleMania. Punk stood on the ringside barricade and soaked up cheers. Punk hair was longer and parted in the middle and not slicked back. Sami pie-faced Punk before the bell. Punk smiled. The ref stepped between them. Cole said things were getting salty. The ref held up the belt. Graves said Punk was the last person on Earth that Sami expected to see tonight. (I bet that&#8217;s not close to true.) Fans sang Punk&#8217;s song even after the music stopped. The bell rang 12 minutes into the hour. Punk dropped to the floor and gave his shirt to a kid in the front row.<\/p>\n<p>Punk dove through the ropes and tackled Sami at ringside at 3:00. [c]<\/p>\n<p>Sami was in control after the break as Cole reset the situation. Cole wondered if Punk was showing signs of ring rust. Graves said there isn&#8217;t much Punk can&#8217;t do in pro wrestling on auto-pilot, but they&#8217;d find out how much gas he has in the tank. Cole said Punk beat Sami in their only other singles match last year, an Elimination Chamber qualifying match. Punk landed a running knee to Sami in the corner and then a spinning neckbreaker for a two count.<\/p>\n<p>Punk signaled for the GTS. He set it up, Sami slipped free and set up a Blue Thunder Bomb. Punk landed a short-arm clotehsline for a two count at 8:00. Fans loudly chanted for Punk as he climbed to the top rope. Sami knocked Punk off balance and landed a superplex. They cut to another break. [c]<\/p>\n<p>They countered each other&#8217;s attempts at signature moves. Punk cupped his ear and set up a move, but Sami countered with a Blue Thunder Bomb. Punk landed a bulldog a minute later and then leaped off the top rope with a flying elbow for a two count. He shifted into an Anaconda Vice and really wrenched it on. Sami escaped with up-kicks. Punk came right back with a GTS attempt, but Sami slipped free and rolled up Punk. Cole said that was how he beat Cody. Punk kicked out at two. A loud &#8220;CM Punk!&#8221; chant rang out.<\/p>\n<p>Sami gave Punk a GTS of his own for a near fall at 17:00. Punk countered a Helluva Kick with an exploder suplex, using a signature Sami move against him. Punk charged, but Sami caught him with another GTS and a Blue Thunder Bomb for a near fall. Sami complained to the ref. The chants for Punk got even louder.<\/p>\n<p>Sami slapped Punk and headbutted him and said, &#8220;I&#8217;m the champion now.&#8221; Punk stood unsteadily and began to punch back. Then he hit a running knee. Punk avoided a desperation Helluva kick. Punk then hit Sami with a Helluva kick followed by a GTS for the win.
