I was going to buy three ROH DVD and Heroes of World Class, but I was disappointed to find out the deal was just on ROH DVD so I picked up another ROH one for the buy three get one free deal.

I found my seat and met a guy who was a long time ROH fan and was bringing his buddy for the first time. We had a fun time filling him in about the wrestlers and why people had toilet paper. The show started exactly at 8 o’clock.

(1) The Briscoes beat Irish Airborne.

Small pop, but they later got an Irish Airborne chant. Briscoes came out to a huge reaction. This is my second time seeing them live and it’s still amazing how much more badass they come off in person. Briscoes worked over Jake Crist during the match and there were some hecklers making fun of David saying “Come on Jake” in a retarded voice. Lots of great and crisp offense from the Briscoes and when the IA finally got some offense in, they did not fail to impress. Great dives to the outside and a moonsault to the outside onto Mark I think by David. Finish came with a submission. Jay cut a promo about how it doesn’t matter who they face… KENTA, Joe, Cide… they would take them all down. Mark then did the “Man Up” thing.

(2) Homicide beat Jimmy Jacobs (w/Lacey).

Lacey looked beautiful as always. There was a decent “Huss” chant at the beginning. We all waited for Cide to come out, but no music played and no lights. They turned the lights up and Jacobs kept yelling “HE’S NOT COMING!” Then Cide’s music hit and the place erupted. Homicide threw his bandana that he was using to cover his face into the crowd and a guy next to me caught it. Jacobs came over and asked for it and the guy was about to give it to him but pulled it back at the last second. Funny stuff and Jacobs looked pissed after he did it again. The match started with Cide taking it to Jacobs. Right away he took him to the outside and did a suplex (if I remember correctly) onto a table that didn’t break. Then he hit him into the guard rail a few times and Cide talked trash to Lacey. When they got back into the ring, Cide kept control of the match and Jacobs had very little offense. Finish came with the lariat. Good semi-squash match. Briscoes came out afterwards and Cide seemed to have the upperhand until the Briscoes double teamed him and hit a double team J-Driller.

(3) Christopher Daniels beat Claudio Castignoli.

Claudio came out to a big “HEY” response. He looked at which way he should walk around the ring but he kept getting met with “HEYS” and would turn the other way only to be met with more. This went on at least ten times. Claudio’s facial expressions every time he’d hear “HEY” were great. Daniels came out to a huge pop. I’m pretty iffy on what happened during the match. Lots of “HEYS” whenever Claudio would look to the audience. Finish came when Claudio grabbed the briefcase and swung and missed Daniels, who went for a quick roll up for the win.

(4) Colt Cabana & Davey Richards beat Jimmy Rave & Sal Rinaro.

Sal and Rave came out to a shower of TP. Very funny to see Sal “taking a bullet” for Rave. Cabana and Richards came out to a huge response. This was my first time seeing Richards live and it blew my expectations away. Very fun match that started with Cabana making fun of Sal & Rave. Cabana kept throwing toilet paper at Rave and one time he hit the ref and the ref got in his face. Rave was yelling for him to DQ Cabana for that. Very Funny. Richards’s kicks are brutal. Finish came when Cabana put Sal in the reverse Boston Crab.
PASTCAST

ARTICLE CONTINUED BELOW…

Check out the latest episode of “PWTorch ’90s Pastcast” with Patrick Moynahan and Alex McDonald, part of the PWTorch Dailycast line-up: CLICK HERE to stream (or search “wade keller” on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or any other iOS or Android app to subscribe free)

<iframe loading="lazy" title="PWTorch ‘90s Pastcast - Moynahan & McDonald discuss PWTorch Newsletter #401 (8-17-96) incl. I had a front row ticket for the Chicago Ridge show, but I wouldn’t be able to make it. So Cary gave me a FULL refund. I was very surprised and very thankful. Since I had an extra 45 dollars, I decided to finally go buy that Heroes of World Class DVD. So I picked up that and another ROH DVD.

(5) Matt Sydal beat Delirious.

This was the match I was looking forward to the most cuz I am a huge Sydal fan and love all their matches from IWA. Sydal came out to a nice pop. I love his Dragon Gate jacket. I would definitely buy one of those if ROH started selling them. Before the match started, Sydal was hesitant to shake Delirious’ hand and the bell rang right away and Sydal looked pissed that he let himself get scared like that. Kind of funny. Match started out with some mat wrestling. Lots of high flying spots. Sydal hit the HERE IT IS driver towards the end for a near fall and a minute later, Delirious hit the CHEMICAL IMBALANCE driver for a new fall also.

The finish came when Delirious was perched on the turnbuckle and Matt yelled to the crowd, “Dragonrana!” but when he jumped to get Delirious’ head between his legs, Delirious kind of swatted his feet away and Sydal got back up and hit the belly to belly for the pinfall. Huge pop for the belly to belly as it is an impressive move live. After the match, Sydal looked pissed cuz I think he wasn’t supposed to miss the Dragonrana. Then him and Delirious hugged and held their arms up. It’s great to see how they’ve come full circle in ROH. They started out on their first show in St. Paul, and tonight they brought the house down. Great match and hopefully comes off very well on DVD.

(6) Roderick Strong & Austin Aries beat Samoa Joe & B.J. Whitmer.

Out next were Joe and Whitmer. HUGE pop for Joe. I tried getting a “BJ Whitmer” chant going but no one would join :(. Some guy in section B had a sign about Joe so he grabbed it and held it up for the camera. Aries and Strong came out to an even bigger pop and a HUGE “Austin Aries” chant. After they got in the ring, the crowd chanted “Welcome Back” to Aries. Joe turned around to my section and said “…Milwaukee is that way.” Very funny. This was an amazing match. Props to Aries for wrestling with his abdomen taped up. Hope his ribs heal soon. He took a beat too. The finish came when Strong pinned Joe with the Gibson Driver. I was shocked that Joe took the fall. This is definitely gonna bring some heat to the eventual match up between them.

(7) Bryan Danielson wrestled Nigel McGuiness to a 60 minute draw in a best of three falls match tied 1-1 at the time limit so he retained the ROH World Hvt. Title.

The main event was up next. Nigel came out to no reaction except me (I popped like a little Hogan fan). I don’t think the crowd knew who to cheer for during the match. During the introductions, Danielson stopped Bobby Cruise to make him say “And the man what will get two straight falls.” Funny. Match started with some mat wrestling. Danielson applying headlocks doesn’t give it justice. There was some dick in sitting in my row who kept heckling Danielson about headlocks. So being the excellent prick heel that he is, he heeled it up and applied more The crowd would pop and chant “that was awesome” after every headlock. There was also a “We Love Headlocks” chant. Before the first pinfall, Nigel got his nose busted open and was bleeding for almost all the match. Nothing serious, but Danielson kept smacking Nigel’s nose because of it. Danielson got the first pinfall with a small package (NO ONE CAN ESCAPE IT!). After a 30 second rest, they went at it again.

I can’t really remember much of the second part of the match, but Danielson hit the Tower of London on Nigel and Nigel hit a bunch of Cattle Mutilations. Nigel finally got the win with a submission. The third part of the match was great. Nigel looked like he was a new man. I think Nigel did an Austin face turn a la Bret-Austin from WM 13. The crowd was behind Nigel. Towards the end, both men were trading forearms and both looked dead. I’m not sure if this is Nigel’s first match like this (60 minute draw, I mean), but he looked dead tired, but came back with some rapid forearms and soon hit a Tower of London for a very very very near fall. After a Cattle Mutilation or two, they announced only nine minutes left in the match. After they announced only two minutes left, Danielson went for the elbows – and man do they look brutal live. After a minute, Nigel reversed it and did some elbows of his own. They announced 30 seconds left and it looked like Danielson was out. Nigel just kept doing more and more and more elbows until the time expired. Hot Finish. The crowd was waiting for the ref to call it.

After the match, Nigel got a big pop and started to walk out. Danielson wasn’t moving and Sinclair check on him and Nigel came back to check. He didn’t move for about five minutes until a student brought some water and poured it over his head. The crowd was on their feet the whole time chanting “Dragon” and clapping. He got a great ovation once he sat up. Danielson dry heaved a bunch and looked like he was actually gonna puke. I was very concerned for him. Danielson and Nigel hugged in the corner. Danielson got on the mic and said that Nigel was his toughest opponent. He also said that since the Pure Title was no more, that he wants to give it to the man that made the belt. Nigel looked humbled and took the belt. Nigel then asked for a mic and put over Danielson and then said that the code of honor states that you shake a man’s hand before and after the match. They shook hands and hugged. Nigel left as Danielson stayed in the ring.

FINAL THOUGHT: Excellent Show. Match of the night was Danielson-Nigel, with the Tag Title match second and Sydal vs. Delirious third… The finish with Danielson not moving in the ring was pretty scary… I should be on the DVD a lot because every time there was a dive into the audience, it was right where I was sitting. So look for me…

THANK YOU FOR VISITING

ROH live event/DVD taping August 25, 2006 St. Paul, Minn. at the Armory Report by Gary Wiest, PWTorch correspondent Got there around 7:30 and checked out the merch table.
