They chanted for him as Owens smiled. Owens said that he’s lost many WWE Championship matches over the last 12 years, but none felt worse than last week in Toronto. He said that he’d spent 17 months not knowing if he’d be able to get back in the ring and then found out he’d need four weeks to get cleared. However, he made it back in nine days because he wanted to go to Summerslam because he wanted to win the title in front of Canadians and because his parents would be able to be at that show. Owens referred back to a time two years ago where his mom had been rushed to the hospital and was fighting for her life. Owens said that his mom “kicked out” and survived, which received cheers. He said that his mom and dad did go to the Toronto show and all Owens wanted was to win the title in front of her. But Sami Zayn prevented that from happening. The crowd booed. Owens acknowledged their long history but said he couldn’t forget this one because he’d never be able to perfectly replicate that opportunity in Toronto, in front of his parents, and against C.M. Punk. Owens said that even Punk knew that last week he was better than him, but Punk got lucky and capitalized on Zayn’s actions. Owens said he wouldn’t stop until he took the title from Punk.

Punk came out with a microphone and headed straight to the ring (without music), saying “no one asked me whether we were done or not.” The crowd loudly booed at the sight and sound of Punk. Smackdown General Manager Nick Aldis quickly walked out and got between them to try and prevent the situation from escalating. Punk said he had him beat and he didn’t need Zayn’s help. Punk said he’d do it right now and told Aldis to make the match. Gunther’s music played.

Gunther walked down to the ring and said that he’d figured out that Owens and Punk hate each other because they see themselves in the other: arrogant, opinionated, obnoxious. He said that while they argued about things that happened twenty years ago, Gunther was here to remind them about what mattered now. He told Owens he was glad his mom kicked out but too bad that last Friday he didn’t. Gunther was about to address Punk, but he was interrupted by Finn Balor.

Balor walked out on stage and said they must have forgotten about him. Gunther mocked Balor by once again calling him “the ghost of Finn Balor”, so Balor retorted by telling him to shut up and called him a prick. Balor told Owens he loved him but he’d had his chance and pointed out that neither Owens nor Gunther had beaten him, so the line started with him. Aldis made a triple threat match for tonight’s main event to determine the number one contender for the WWE Championship.

(Corbridge’s Analysis: The current main players in the WWE title picture were accounted for, minus Zayn. No one REALLY has a rock solid argument to be the number one contender anymore, so having the triple threat match makes sense. It was good to see Punk once again not be satisfied that he retained via tainted victory.)

– Chelsea Green showed off her new mask (to protect her broken orbital bone) to bestie Tiffany Stratton. Stratton tried to talk her out of teaming with her tonight since Green only has thirty days total to defend her title or else she must forfeit it. Announcer Michael Cole said that both Stratton and Green were banged up heading into the upcoming match. [c]

(1) TIFFANY STRATTON & CHELSEA GREEN vs. THE IRRESISTIBLE FORCES (Nia Jax & Lash Legend)

Green was wearing her new bedazzled face mask. Legend rag dolled Stratton to start the match. Stratton wriggled free and hit a seated dropkick and hip attack into the ropes. Legend recovered quickly and caught her with a backbreaker, leading to a two-count. Stratton slipped out of a chokeslam attempt and tagged in Green. They hit a double-team stunner/neckbreaker combo and celebrated while Legend made the tag. They hit a double dropkick and Green followed with double knees to the back. Green with a step up enziguri but Jax headbutted her right in the face. Green sold it by screaming in agony and tagging out as Cole pointed out that she was in deep trouble. They went to a split screen. [c]

Jax drove Green’s face into her knee and Green rolled to the outside screaming again as medical personnel checked on her. Back in the ring, Legend had Stratton in a bear hug. Stratton escaped but Legend knocked her down with a forearm and covered for another two-count. Jax tagged back in and splashed her in the corner once. She went for another but Stratton sidestepped. She couldn’t gain any momentum however, as Jax dropped her with a shoulder block. They showed Green still on the outside in agony and calling her partner’s name. Jax and Legend continued to dominate Stratton with quick tags and grinding power moves. Stratton avoided a legdrop and used Jax to leverage over Legend into a facebuster of sorts.

Meanwhile, the medical team was escorting Green to the back down the ramp. Stratton crawled to her corner but realized no one was there. Green fought off the medical team and ran back to the ring. She tagged in and hit a missile dropkick on Jax as the crowd erupted. Green dropkicked Jax off the apron to the floor, then climbed to the top and hit a cross body to the floor on Jax. The fans started a “Chelsea” chant as she rolled Jax back in the ring and went for the Unpretty-her. Jax pushed off and sent Green to the ropes where Legend was waiting. But Green knocked Legend off. Stratton leapt from the apron onto Legend but was caught and slung into the side of the barricade. Jax hit Green with a straight right to the beak and a Samoan drop. She went up and hit the Annihilator for the win.

Cole pointed out that Jax just pinned the WWE Women’s Champion.

WINNERS: Nia Jax and Lash Legend by pinfall in 10:00.

– Nick Aldis was standing in his office talking to someone on the phone. Danhausen walked in and welcomed “suit guy” back to Smackdown. He said he could be the employee of the month. Gunther walked in and said he’d been waiting to meet him and put out his hand. Gunther ignored him and told Aldis that he didn’t appreciate him making him have to jump through hoops to get a title shot. Aldis said may the best man win. Danhausen asked if he could be added to the match. Aldis said no.

– Paige entered for her title opportunity. [c]

(2) JACY JAYNE (w/Fallon Henley, Laney Reid) vs. PAIGE – Women’s United States Championship match

Cole ran down Paige’s list of WWE accomplishments including being a former two-time Divas, NXT, and tag-team champion. Jayne immediately called for a timeout so she could confer with Henley and Reid. Paige charged but Jayne dropped her by her hair and hit a senton, then gloated to the crowd. She missed a second senton and Paig side-kicked her. Paige draped Jayne through the ropes and hit several knees to her face. Jayne tried to regroup on the floor but Paige hit a cannonball. For the second time in less than two minutes Paige was compelled to remind (or convince?) the crowd that it was her house. Reid laid her out with a pump kick. Fatal Influence gloated. [c]

The women laid each other out with a double clothesline. They quickly arose and traded yay/boo blows until Jayne hit a step-up enziguri. The crowd booed. Paige took control after Jayne gloated, with a fisherman’s suplex and a German suplex. Paige hit the Paige turner and covered for a nearfall. Paige was frustrated that that didn’t get the win. Paige attempted the PTO but Jayne escaped. Paige rolled up Jayne for a two-count and followed up with a headbutt. She went for the Rampage but Reid and Henley distracted her. Paige managed to fight them off but walked back into a Jayne small package for the one…two…three.

WINNER: Jacy Jayne via pinfall in 8:00. Jayne retained the U.S. title.

– After the match, Nikki Bella attacked Paige from behind. She hit a weak takedown and stomped on her surgically repaired neck. Bella soaked in the crowd’s disdain before hitting the Rack Attack 2.0.

(Corbridge’s Analysis: I guess it wasn’t Paige’s house tonight.)

– Cody Rhodes talked to Finn Balor in the back. Rhodes asked Balor for advice on his recent predicament, where if he lays a finger on Randy Orton prior to their match at Sunday Night’s Main Event next weekend, then he’ll never receive another WWE Championship match. Balor told him he better keep his cool because Orton was trying to goad him down a dark path. He told Cody to handle his business and that by the time he’s ready for a title shot Balor will be the champion anyway. They shook hands and said, “see you on the other side.” [c]

(Corbridge’s Analysis: This is what you’d call a “red herring.” If we see a babyface champion Finn Balor versus a babyface challenger Cody Rhodes any time in the next 365 days I’ll eat my hat. Woo-ooo.)

– Trick Williams told Lil Yachty in a hallway that he appreciated him but wondered if Yachty was ready to face Baron Corbin. He said that despite being bald, Corbin was ferocious, mean, and ugly. Yachty wasn’t sweating Corbin and was mad that Corbin disrespected them, put Yachty through a table on ESPN, and took his title. Yachty hyped up Trick for his “future title match.” Yachty walked off. Trick turned around and Corbin was standing there. Corbin said that at Sunday Night’s Main Event he was gonna “whoop that trick,” referring to Yachty. Trick chided him for not being creative with that line. Corbin responded that he didn’t have to be entertaining because he was the champ and held up the belt .

(Corbridge’s Analysis: Last week Corbin said the belt was “getting a haircut.” But it looked exactly the same. He was wearing a bright pink pinstriped suit because he’s Cody Rhodes and that’s something he would do. The fans sang his song and applauded themselves for it because that’s what the fans do.

[HOUR TWO]

Cody inquired on what Ottawa wanted to talk about. Unsurprisingly, he wanted to talk about Randy Orton and the number 15. Cody said that “18” was out of the question for Orton now because every time Orton has chances he screws up. He said that Orton always has excuses but Cody said he was there when other people got shown the door for things that Orton was only given a slap on the wrist for. Cody said that Orton screwed up again by getting between Cody and the WWE Championship at Summerslam. Cody started to say that at Sunday Night’s Main Event it would by Cody killing the legend or Orton, but Orton interrupted first.

Orton slowly walked to the ring, sans microphone. The crowd sang again because that’s what the crowd does. I chided them for it because that’s what I do. Orton entered the ring and admitted that earlier in his career he lacked accountability and made many bad decisions. He said that Cody was his babysitter, driver, and bitch back then. He asked Cody if he resented him for that and said that if he were Cody he’d punch him in the face. He dared Cody to take a swing but Cody kept his composure. Orton reminded Cody how he punted him in the face at Wrestlemania, leaving Cody disfigured for months, and then came back at Summerslam to ensure he didn’t beat C.M. Punk for the title. He dared him to take a swing again. Orton brought up Cody’s dog Pharoah who died and talked about his daughters’ having to bury Pharoah in their backyard. Cody took off his jacket and tried to keep his cool. He asked if Cody’s trailer park trash mother was going to be sitting front row when Orton beat his ass. Cody loosened his tie and looked like he wanted to strike. Orton then asked if Cody’s trashy-ass wife was going to be there. Orton smiled and again dared Cody to hit him. Cody said he knew what Orton was doing and knew he’d do it to try to get out of Sunday Night’s Main Event.

Cody said he was counting the day until that match in Atlanta and that he wanted to see if Orton truly was a once in a lifetime generational superstar like Cody’s dad was, or if Orton was first class screw-up like Orton’s dad was. That got a strong reaction from the crowd and Orton. Cody asked Orton if he wanted to hit him now. Cody said he’d see Orton in Atlanta, threw the microphone and left. Cody’s music played to end.

(Corbridge’s Analysis: Tremendous segment that accomplished its goal of the heel Orton trying to goad the babyface Cody into hitting him. She told Redmond a secret, which caused Redmond to want to leave. Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss showed up and Tatum said she has the most fun at brunch with them last week. Flair said three was a crowd but Bliss said that they were going to have to deal with it because they’d be facing Jade Cargill, B-Fab, and Michin in a match at Saturday Night’s Main Event. Flair said that Paxley had this week to show her what she could do. Fenix said he loved his brother but it would be his moment. Ricky Saints entered the frame and said Fenix was going to lose and then he’d better come back and give Saints a shot at the AAA Cruiserweight title. Fenix thought that was funny and told him a story that he was going to win the World Heavyweight Championship, then come back and shut Saints up. Cole mentioned that she was a former power lifter, as well as a former NXT Women’s and North American Champion. Paxley vaulted out of a seated waistlock and smiled. She ducked a spin kick, leapfrogged, and matrix-ducked an attack. Michin kicked her from the apron while Paxley was on the floor. It seemed like they were going to go to a commercial but didn’t. Paxley hit a moonsault off the apron and celebrated with Flair and Bliss. Flair said, “that was good, but you have to keep going.” Then they went to that break. [c]

Michin was in control after the break, softening up Paxley. Michin hit a big forearm that earned her a nearfall. Michin took a while to set up a surfboard submission. Paxley flipped over and almost pinned her. Michin missed a corner splash and Paxley rolled her up for a two-count. Paxley with a superkick and weirdly hulked-up/convulsed then nailed Michin with a couple running forearms and a step-up enziguri. (is that the new DDT?) Michin executed a sit-out powerbomb. She went for the Styles Clash but Paxley backdropped her and hit a rolling kick. Paxley hit the Cemetery Drive for the win in her Smackdown debut match. Monroe said that match was beneath her. Giulia attacked Monroe and threw her into a garage door.

– Kevin Owens talked to Randy Orton in the back. Orton said Owens was right about Cody Rhodes, which made Owens happy. But Orton said he hadn’t forgotten that Owens dropped him on his head so they still weren’t friends. Truth said they were going to get their titles back. However, Priest said that while teaming with Truth was incredible, but now that they weren’t the champions he wanted to get back to going for singles championships. The War Raiders walked up and were upset that now the MFT’s would have to take their beatings instead of Priest and Truth. The Raiders said they’d put their AAA belts on the line. Truth accepted but Priest didn’t want that. Priest finally agreed to do it one more time for Truth.

– Nia Jax demanded a title match against Chelsea Green from Nick Aldis. Jax said that since Green only had thirty days to defend her title, then if Jax didn’t get her shot in the next two weeks then she’d take it by force. She and Lash Legend left Adlis’s office. The Miz and Kit Wilson walked in and complained about being lab rats. Wilson said Aldis was toxic and said that he owed them. Aldis paid them with a tag team match next week against Shinsuke Nakamura and Kyoki.

(Corbridge’s Analysis: Heel Jax is right. There were only ten minutes left in the show when the match began. Balor re-entered via sunset flip over the ropes, that earned a one-count on Gunther. The action was fast as Owens superkicked Balor and hit a senton on Gunther. Owens with a swanton bomb and covered Gunther, but Balor broke it up. Balor escaped a piledriver attempt and hit Owens with a basement dropkick. Gunther welcomed Balor to the Austrian Chophouse, then reminded him that he didn’t have a reservation. Cole said that Gunther only cared about himself. He charged Balor who ducked sending Gunther to the floor. Balor hit a somersault over the top to the floor as they went to a split screen. [c]

Owens superkicked Gunther and Balor but Balor caught him with a Pele kick on the way down. All three grapplers where prone on the mat. Balor was up first and slowly ascended the top rope. Gunther avoided a Coup de Grace. Owens hit a cannonball on Gunther in the corner. Balor with a slingblade on Owens followed by a shotgun dropkick to Owens. Balor climbed up again but Owens met him at the top rope. Owens went for a superplex but Gunther yanked him off and leveled him with a huge clothesline. Gunther gave Balor a second helping of his world-famous chops and locked in the sleeper on Owens on the mat. Balor hit the Coup de Grace on them to break it up. Owens rolled to ringside. Balor hit another shotgun dropkick on Gunther and went up again. He hit the Coup de Grace on Gunther and hooked the leg. But Sami Zayn, just like last week, pulled someone off a match-winning cover by yanking Balor to the floor.

Zayn threw Balor over the announce desk as the referee yelled at him. Zayn decked the referee. Back in the ring. Owen dropped Gunther with a Stunner and covered, but there was no referee to count. Another referee ran down but Zayn clotheslined him yelling “not on my watch. C.M. Punk ran out (this time with music) and brawled with Zayn. Punk yelled “this is justice” as he unloaded on Zayn. Zayn hit Owens in the head with the title. Then he hit Balor . Gunther locked in the sleeper, which actually drew cheers, but Zayn hit him with the belt too. Then he hit Punk to complete the circuit.
