They threw to a video package of Vince McMahon appointing John Laurinaitis the interim G.M. last week.

-Laurinaitis walked out and addressed the crowd. He said tonight was supposed to mark the return of Rey Mysterio. He said that Rey would not be there as he was doing rehab in San Diego. When the fans booed, he smiled and said he was joking and that they need a sense of humor. Laurinaitis said he’ll do everything in his power to restore dignity and order into Raw. He said the Board of Directors has confidence in him and he will not let them down, nor will he let the fans down. He said he may make some mistakes. He said one mistake was firing Jim Ross last week. He said he received a lot of negative, often disturbing emails and Twitters last week not appropriate to read on TV. He said he listened to them and he has brought Ross back. The crowd chanted “Jim Ross! Jim Ross!” It was a strange cadence from U.S. chants.

Ross then walked out to his Oklahoma Sooners theme song. Cole said, “Oh no. My god. You’ve got to be kidding me!” Lawler said, “Good ol’ J.R. is back!” He apologized to Ross for his unprofessional behavior last week, but he said he didn’t bring him back tonight to commentate. Laurinaitis showed footage of Cole gloating about J.R. being fired during a commercial break last week. He booked Cole & Alberto Del Rio vs. Ross & John Cena. Cole stood up and taunted Ross, calling him “fat boy.”

(WK Reax: WWE is taking advantage of the obvious popularity Ross has with a lot of fans, and the fact that he makes a good punching bag. The question is whether this is designed to draw money and help the product or if it’s just more nonsense masked as placating the fans who were upset with how he was treated last week.)

-Randy Orton’s music then played and he made his ring intro for a six-man match scheduled next. [c]

[Q2]

1 — RANDY ORTON & JOHN MORRISON & SHEAMUS vs. CODY RHODES & MARK HENRY & CHRISTIAN

At 2:00 Orton attacked Cody on the floor and then chased him to the back. They cut to a break. [c]

Orton and Cody were still gone after the break, so Morrison battled Henry inside the ring. Henry headbutted Morrison to the mat. Lawler said the bear hug should be renamed the Henry Hug because Henry doing it hurts more than a bear. At 11:00 Christian and Sheamus brawled into the crowd. Morrison springboard kicked Henry in the head. Henry countered with a World’s Strongest Slam for the win. Cole said: “Big Show, beware, Mark Henry means business.”

WINNERS: Henry & Rhodes & Christian in 12:00.

[Q3] [c]

-A vignette aired on Brodus Clay. He says he’s dominant, controlling, and unforgiving. He said he doesn’t respect his opponents, he destroys them. He is shown pulling his opponent’s head and shoulders up at the two count; he says that’s the point his opponent knows he’s at his mercy. The sound mix wasn’t great as you really had to focus to hear him above the music in the background.

-They showed scenes from the streets of Mexico City.

-They cut to Laurinaitis on his cell phone. It’s not an iPhone, of course. The Bellas flirtatiously asked if he had forgotten how important they are to Raw. Laurinaitis said he hasn’t. He then called the person back. Ricardo walked in and tried to talk him, but Laurinaitis tried to brush him off. Alberto Del Rio then walked up to him and stared him down. Laurinaitis hung up the phone. Del Rio complained about the tag match he’s scheduled for. Laurinaitis said the winner of tonight’s match will pick the stip of the one-on-one title match this Sunday.

(WK Reax: It’s nice they got around to promoting Sunday’s PPV.)

2 — EVE & KELLY KELLY vs. NATALYA & BETH PHOENIX

Cole wondered what Ross was up to backstage to prepare for his match later. I know he drinks a lot of coffee.” Eve won with a moonsault on Natalya. Cole said Eve will have her chance at the Divas Title on Sunday. It’s nice he found time to fit that PPV plug in given his preoccupation with his one-liners about J.R. (fed to him by Vince McMahon, no doubt).

WINNERS: Eve & Kelly in 2:00. [c…]

[Q4] […c]

-C.M. Punk made his full ring intro. Miz and R-Truth then made their entrance. Miz boasted that Punk is nervous because of the beatdown they gave him at Hell in a Cell. (Remember that, everyone?) He said they made sure he won’t get a title shot for a very long time and also managed to get Triple H thrown out of power, something Punk couldn’t ever do. Punk mock-clapped in response. Truth told the fans to shut up. He pointed at Punk and said, “You talk too much.” Punk laughed. Truth said he can’t stand someone who runs his mouth. Punk smiled and locked his lips shut. Truth said he won’t be smiling when they beat his ass tonight and wipe the mat with him this Sunday at Vengeance. Truth said they want vengeance “and vengeance is gonna get got.” Miz chimed in, “And that’s awesome.” Triple H’s music played and he walked out wearing dress clothes. He pulled off his tie. Cole said the COO is in the house on Raw as they cut to a break. [c]

3 — C.M. PUNK (w/Triple H) vs. THE MIZ (w/R-Truth)

Cole complained about Triple H attacking Miz and Truth while they were in handcuffs. Lawler said his point is well taken. When Truth made a move toward Punk at ringside after Miz threw him to the floor, Triple H moved in and blocked Truth. Miz yapped at Triple H from inside the ring. Triple H glared back at him.

[Q5]

At 5:00 Miz grabbed at Punk’s leg from ringside. Miz attacked Punk from behind. Triple H ran into the ring, but the ref cut him off, and that just gave the heels time to double-team Punk. That was a High Flyers speciality, with Greg Gagne and Jim Brunzell always ending up in that situation in tag matches. At 8:00 Punk caught Miz diving off the top rope, nailing him with a spin wheel kick. Both were slow to get up. Truth hit Punk at ringside with a bottle of water. Triple H chased Truth to the back. Laurinaitis walked out and ordered the match to be stopped. He said, “We have an immigration problem. I need to talk to you.” He showed Triple H some paperwork. Triple H said, “Are you kidding me right now?” Laurinaitis asked Triple H go to the back with him right now. Truth got in Triple H’s face and obnoxiously signaled for him to go on back. Triple H punched him, which got a big crowd pop. [c]

They showed that during the break Laurinaitis told Triple H to figure out what went wrong with the paperwork. Lawler said customs officials escorted him away. David Otunga stood closely by and watched. Lawler said that was quite convenient to happen in the middle of the match. Cole said rules are rules. You knew they couldn’t get through a Raw in Mexico without an angle having to do with a work visa or a similar paperwork issue.

The match continued. Cole’s mic sounded weird as he plugged Twitter. It sounded like it was inserted after the fact. At 16:00 Punk hit a top rope elbowdrop. He had to fend off Truth on the ring apron, which gave Miz a chance to recover and then go for his finisher. Punk escaped and shoved Miz into Truth on the ring apron, then rolled him up from behind.

WINNER: Punk in 17:00.

-Afterward Miz and Truth beat up Punk, and Triple H was nowhere in sight. Several referees ran out, but Miz gave Punk a Skull Crushing Finale before leaving.

(WK Reax: I love this post on our Facebook Fan page from Kevin Buckley: “When the king said he’s glad Triple H is back, my daughter said, ‘Wasn’t he the first one to walk out on him? This show is confusing.’ If WWE starts losing the 12 year olds they are in trouble.” So well said.)

[Q6] [c]

-A commercial aired for the 2012 launch of the WWE Network.

-They showed a mariachi band playing outside the arena, then threw to the Spanish announce team, Carlos Carbrera and Marcelo Rodriguez.

-Cole and Lawler revealed that fans voted for the name of the WrestleMania themed show: WrestleMania Rewind beat out Flashback, Revisited, and Review. They asked fans now to vote for the reality show featuring former WWE wrestlers living in a house together.

-Vickie Guerrero, Jack Swagger, and Dolph Ziggler stood mid-ring. Vickie said that her men will get a tag team title shot against Air Boom on Vengeance. Ziggler said it’s a big honor for the fans to be able to watch them in the ring right now. He said he knows most of them want to leave Mexico and never look back, going to the greatest country in the world right now. He said is the champion of that greatest country, the United States of America. He added: “And just like Affliction shirts coming back into style, scars on men, Titus O’Neill, and trying to count every ab on my body before I finish this sentence, you will never make it.” He said the next best thing is their chance to see them tonight. Swagger then sang (poorly) the U.S.A. National Anthem. He complained that the fans booing him caused him to lose his place, so he was going to start over. As Swagger began singing again, Zack Ryder’s ring intro interrupted.

(WK Reax: Ziggler gains more confidence on the mic every week that goes by.)

4 — JACK SWAGGER (w/Vickie Guerrero, Dolph Ziggler) vs. ZACK RYDER

Cole explained Ryder became the Internet Champion because he won an imaginary tournament with 63 other imaginary friends. Swagger powerslammed Ryder in the opening seconds. Ryder caught a charging Swagger with two knees to the face. He followed with his finisher for the upset win. Cole: “Zach Ryder wins again somehow!”

WINNER: Ryder in 1:00.

-Mason Ryan marched out afterward and called Ziggler to the ring. [c…]

[Q7] […c]

5 — MASON RYAN (w/Zack Ryder) vs. DOLPH ZIGGLER (w/Vickie Guerrero, Jack Swagger)

Ryder overpowered Ziggler early in the match, and then knocked him down by standing still, showing all the mobility and grace of Hulk Hogan last night against Sting. Ryan slammed Ziggler and then almost gave him a boot to the face, although Ziggler is so far out there, he rebounded the ropes before Ryan could lift his tree trunk leg. Vickie got between Ryan and Ziggler at ringside, then slapped Ryan. Ryan looked upset and made cartoon faces. He attacked Ziggler in the ring in a rage. He beat on him in the corner and didn’t break before five, so the ref Charles Robinson DQ’d him.

WINNER: Ziggler in 3:00.

-Swagger saved Ziggler from a post-match press slam. Ryan knocked Swagger to the floor, then picked up Ziggler and gave him his turning powerslam.

(WK Reax: Ziggler is the best bumping heel in WWE right now. He’s flying out there and is now the go-to person to put a stiff green musclehead like Ryan over in the ring.)

-John Cena gave Jim Ross a pep talk backstage. Ross said the last place he needs to be is in the ring. Cena said he’s a WWE Hall of Famer, whereas people like Laurinaitis are a dime a dozen. He told Ross he’s the greatest voice WWE has ever had. Cena told Ross to let him do his thing and he’ll beat Del Rio. Ross stood up and said he’d really like to get his hands on Cole because he’s a “sniveling rodent-like smarmy arrogant pathetic little son of a bitch.” Cena said, “That’s being awful polite.” He said after all he’s done for him, he’ll make that happen.

-Back at ringside, Cole stood up and asked the crowd for his attention. He said everyone is regurgitating watching that. He said he’s going to take Ross, the self-pitying windbag, and put him out of his misery. He said he might even pin John Cena tonight. He said his wife is Mexican so the fans have to cheer for him. [c]

-They showed Raw and Smackdown atop the top ten longest running weekly episodic TV shows in history.

-Josh Mathews joined Lawler on commentary, replacing Cole. They hyped the Vengeance line-up.

-Ricardo introduced Del Rio.

[Q8] [c]

6 — JOHN CENA & JIM ROSS vs. ALBERTO DEL RIO & MICHAEL COLE

Cena got a big pop coming out. They showed fans going crazy for him as he walked to the stage. Cena and Ross hugged. Cole begged Del Rio to let him start the match. He patted his belly and signaled he wanted Ross. The bell rang and Ross happily tagged in. Cole said he owns Ross and he owns this country. Ross wound up and gave him a stiff slap upside his head. Cole went down and he tagged in Del Rio. Ross tagged in Cena. At 1:00 Del Rio settled into a chinlock on Cena. At 4:00, with Del Rio on top, Lawler noted that Cena had no one practical to tag out to because the last thing Cena or Ross would want is for Ross to tag in against Del Rio. Del Rio settled into another chinlock. The crowd was into this with chants, led by Ricardo at ringside.

[Q9]

Del Rio stayed on offense and got several two counts. They couldn’t do a lot with this tag match as they wanted to build up to one Cena comeback, but they had time to fill, and Del Rio’s offense is pretty rudimentary and methodical. At 6:00 Cena avoided a top rope senton splash and then made his comeback. He went into You Can’t See Me, and the crowd gave him the usual mix of low cheers and high cheers. Del Rio, in a panic, tagged in Cole. Cena yanked Cole into the ring. Cole begged off and said he didn’t mean all of that stuff he said. Cena looked like he was going to forgive him, but then he gave him an Attitude Adjustment. As he was about to apply an STF, he stopped and tagged in Ross. Ross tagged in to very little pop and put Cole in an anklelock. Cole tapped out and made cartoon faces. Ross raised his arms in victory.

WINNERS: Cena & Ross in 10:00.

-Afterward Cena gave an attacking Del Rio an Attitude Adjustment on the floor. Lots of boos. Cena then counted toward ten. That indicated Cena was going to make it a Last Man Standing match at Vengeance. Del Rio got up at 7. Cena clotheslined him, then lifted the top of the ringside steps and charged Del Rio and KO’d him with them. He then counted to ten. The Cena fans counted along. Cena then made it official – Sunday at Vengeance will be a Last Man Standing match for the WWE Title.

FINAL THOUGHTS: The show was built more around Jim Ross jokes and pushing WWE Network than selling the idea of Cena wanting to get “his” WWE Title back. At the very end they pushed the title match, but the downside is Cena already laid out Del Rio so there is no “need for revenge.” They didn’t make a big enough deal out of Cena wanting the title back to make it seem like a rallying cry for the fans to watch him on Sunday. Overall, very weak PPV build the last three weeks collectively, maybe the least compelling in a long time. I’m very curious what the butyrate turns out to be, and whether WWE keeps this three PPV stretch in September/October next fall. The show itself was an improvement over last week, of course, because it wasn’t a convoluted mess of angles about backstage power brokers.

THANK YOU FOR VISITING

The following is PWTorch’s report on WWE Raw the last time it emanated from Mexico City, Mexico… KELLER’S WWE RAW REPORT OCTOBER 17, 2011 TAPED IN MEXICO CITY, MEXICO AIRED ON USA NETWORK [Q1] -The […]

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

30,31

post-222366","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-specialfeatures","category-exclusives_flashbacks
["GET
