We now know who will fight Kelani Jordan for the Women’s title and are moving closer to knowing Grayson Waller’s opponent for Havoc.

NXT MENS HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION
Men’s Champion: Grayson Waller

Grayson Waller came out for a promo segment. He complimented EK Prosper for his match last week. He stated that he is returning the NXT Heavyweight Title to its former prestige. He challenged the locker room to see who his next opponent will be. This turned out to be Myles Borne. Borne reiterated last week’s comments about being selfish and doing things for me.

After Borne’s statements, Tony D’Angelo entered the ring. He took offense to Waller’s “prestige” comment and says he has unfinished business for his title. Waller said if you two fight, I’ll meet the winner at Halloween Havoc. At that point, Borne hit Tony D, with a right hand filled with a roll of quarters. Tony D’Angelo vs. Myles Borne to see who the number one contender will be next week.

Brandler’s Bit: I’m loving the “old school” roll of quarters knockout. This one hasn’t been used in years. Curt Hennig won the AWA World Title in 1987 this way, but has not been on WWE/for a long time. Will this strategy lead Borne to the NXT Title?

NXT WOMEN’S CHAMPION
Women’s Champion: Kelani Jordan

Then came a 20-woman battle royal where the winner of the match would earn a title match against Kelani Jordan at Halloween Havoc. Right off the bat, the Zaria-Izzy Dame feud fired up with Zaria eliminating Dame. Izzy paid that back later, distracting Zaria which led to her being thrown over the top rope.

The final four wrestlers were Kali Armstrong, Kiana James, La Catalina, and Lizzy Rain. Vic Joseph on commentary, using his best “Chekhov’s gun” technique, reminded us (several times) that Lady Shana was not eliminated and technically in the match. Kali and Lizzy were the final two wrestlers. Kali threw Lizzy out of the ring. It appeared that Kali had won the match. At that moment, Lady Shana appeared and threw the surprised Armstrong over the top rope for the win. Shana unmasked to reveal that she was the suspended Wren Sinclair!

Brandler’s Bit: I am not a fan of battle royals. They are usually slow and plodding and, as a fan, I am waiting for the “real action” to occur. This one held my attention. The Sinclair swerve was totally unpredictable. Let’s see how they pay it off!

MID-CARD MATCHES

There were two mid-card matches.

Lexis King (with Birthright) vs. Zilla Fatu. This match started fast with Fatu beating up King on the ramp. Each of them had good rallies and comebacks. Zilla took over and used the Bloodline move set – Samoan Drop/clothesline/headbutt before finishing King with his Triple Z finisher. After the match, Birthright attacked Fatu. They placed his hand under the ring steps and crushed it with the other step.

Brandler’s Bit: NXT is treating Fatu like he is a video game character. Not only does Fatu have the Bloodline playbook, but he has a “Super Cena” mode. Last week, he took on all members of Birthright and looked strong. He has connected to the fans with his “Hello” catchphrase. King looked good in the match in a losing effort. I suspect Zilla will have matches against all of Birthright.

Nakaru vs. Shiloh Hill

This was billed as a “grudge match” after Nakaru blinded Shiloh with the mist. Shiloh held his own with Nakaru. They went back and forth with heavy-hitting moves and submissions. Late in the match, Nakaru went to use the mist, but Hill blocked it. Nakaru hit a senton and then went for the mist again. He went to hit Shiloh, but hit the ref instead with the blue mist. Both Shiloh and Nakaru fought to the locker room.

Brandler’s Bit: A classic experienced wrestler vs. less experienced wrestler. Nakaru is very polished and smooth. Shiloh has the potential to be really good. I think we’ve hit the place where the mist is expected and has become the finish of the match. His matches with Tony D back in June and July made him way more “Evil” than he is now. He is now the “guy with the mist” and is way more talented than that.

DUSTY RHODES TAG TEAM CUP CLASSIC MATCHES

There were two matches in the Dusty Cup.

Shido Ash & Viktor Zanov vs. Hank & Tank

Hank & Tank are popular with the Capital Wrestling Center (CWC) crowd. Zanov & Ash in Evolve wrestlers. They displayed some solid Judo hip tosses and throws. Late in the match, Hank and Tank took off their shirts and set up their finishing move which crushed Ash. Hank & Tank advanced. They will will face The Creeds in the quarter finals.

Brandler’s Bit: Credit to Hank & Tank for their hard work, exciting personalities, and the ability to carry the Evolve team to a passable pro wrestling match. That said, they are missing many elements to their “game” which would move them out of the mid-card.

Tokyo Bad Boys (TBB) vs. Sean Legacy & Dorian Van Dux (DVD)

This was going to be the match until Birthright beat up Legacy and DVD in the back. (Side note: There are two places to never be in NXT: the parking lot and the backstage area. People always get hurt there) General Manager Robert Stone and William Regal (who is the father of Charley Dempsey, who is Birthright) had a conversation right after the attack. Regal offered the other half of Birthright – Dempsey and King – as substitutes. Begrudgingly and out of desperation, Stone agreed.

King & Dempsey vs. TBB. TBB started out hot with an assortment of lucha moves – topés, a tornillo, and flips off the top rope. Wow! Later in the match, King & Dempsey slowed down the pace, which gave them the advantage. Dempsey won with a top rope belly-to-back suplex into a bridge for the win. King & Dempsey will now take on The Wagner Brothers.

Brandler’s Bit: There is a lot to break down here. There is the match and the angle before the match. The match was a great way to introduce TBB to many CW viewers who haven’t seen their work in AAA. King & Dempsey, as second-generation wrestlers, know how to showcase new talent.

The angle before the match is more interesting. Did NXT reward bad behavior by having the heel team beat up the competition in order for them to gain entry into the match? Yes, they did! It also showed a very cunning side to Regal as he was able to convince Stone to put his son and King into the tournament. Many people in pro wrestling and in the media root for the bad guys to succeed despite their bad deeds. This angle hit the same nerve. Birthright got rid of the competition. They took advantage of the situation to get into the tournament. Against inexperienced competition, they were able to move into the quarter-finals. Their match against El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr and his brother Galeno del Mal (The Wagner Brothers) will show us if the end justifies the means.

PROMO SEGMENTS

Therapy Session

We were “treated” to session three of Kendal Grey’s therapy session. We learned that she only knows how to fight harder and overcome all obstacles and that she has now completed her mandated therapy sessions!

Brandler’s Bit: I am incredibly biased about any media portraying therapy (since I am a psychologist), but this was dreadful. Please let Kendal go back to actually wrestling! One potential positive from this dreadful angle: If Wren Sinclair beats Kelani Jordan, do we get a best friends match up of Wren vs. Kendal?

Dion Lennox

Dion Lennox had a response to Cruz Montana’s heartfelt promo. Among his comments were:

•“You’re a grown ass man being celebrated for doing the right things.”

•“It took me two years to make it to NXT TV, it took you 20…. You may have beaten your addiction, but you will not beat me!”

Brandler’s Bit: Lennox has a smug delivery which looks like he is trying to sell a product for a commercial, not trying to sell a pro wrestling match. At the end of his well-produced promo, I was left with the thought: Should we celebrate an athlete with privilege (the 1 percent of the 1 percent as Lennox stated) or a great comeback story. I want to see the match not so that Cruz can win, but so that we don’t have to watch Lennox do any more bad promos!

NEXT WEEK ON NXT

Myles Borne vs. Tony D’Angelo – Winner gets Grayson Waller for the Men’s Heavyweight title at Halloween Havoc (Expect a Tavion Heights run in to cost Borne his title shot)

Tristan Angels vs. Saquon Shugars. This is Saquon’s revenge match after Angels cost him the title. Two weeks ago, at an NXT house show, they used Niko Vance as Angel’s bodyguard. If they do that for next week’s match, that is brilliant booking!

Dusty Rhodes Cup Matches

Fraxiom vs. Noam Dar & Romeo Moreno (please give this match time…..)

The NXT Tag Team Champions, The Vanity Project vs. Mini Vikingo and Chazz (Could we get an underdog upset here?)

THANK YOU FOR VISITING

This edition of NXT began to set up the card for NXT’s Halloween Havoc which is on Saturday October 31th.
