The winner, a formerly suspended Wren Sinclair, was shown walking through the parking lot. I guess she must have paid off Lady Shani to borrow her gear and take her place. I’m also guessing that winning a battle royal while pretending to be a masked wrestler automatically results in the suspension being lifted. Am I overthinking all of this?

(1) THE VANITY PROJECT (Brad Baylor & Ricky Smokes) (w/Jackson Drake & Myka Lockwood) vs. MINI VIKINGO & CHAZZ “STARBOY” HALL – Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Quarterfinal Match

Smokes started the match with the Starboy. Hall showed off his incredible athleticism against Smokes, then Baylor before they resorted to brawling tactics and double teaming to take the advantage. Hall managed to slip free and make the very hot tag to the incredible Mini Vikingo, who dazzled the crowd as he dispatched Baylor and Smokes. As the fight went to the floor, Vikingo found himself face to face with the much larger Lockwood. The distraction was sufficient for The Vanity Project to take back control of the match before they cut to a split-screen commercial break. [c]

After we were distracted by the wonderfully entertaining commercials on the right screen, some wrestling was silently happening on the teeny, tiny screen on the left. Back to full-screen, Vikingo was trying to fight his way out of the clutches of The Vanity Project to tag Starboy. He landed a standing Spanish Fly on Baylor, then both men made the hot tag. The Denim Dragon hit a spectacular double pele kick, followed by a twisting senton on Smokes for a near fall. He then executed a spectacular dive over the top rope before Vikingo hit a 450 splash on Smokes for a very believable near fall. Hall attempted a flying press, but was caught by Baylor with a black hole slam. Vikingo broke up the pin by jumping on Baylor’s back and launching himself onto Smokes and delivering a poisonrana.

All four men were lying on the mat before Baylor recovered to thump on Hall for a moment, but the Starboy somehow reversed a powerbomb attempt into a hurricanrana that was a sight to behold. Hall and Baylor fudged a move, but recovered nicely enough before Vikingo landed a senton on Smokes for a two-count. Vikingo and Hall continued to light up the ring until Smokes got his knees up as Hall came off the top with a shooting star press. The Vanity Project polished off Hall with an assisted stomp from the top rope.

WINNERS: The Vanity Project at 12:59 to advance to the semifinals.

(Miller’s Take: What a way to start the show! As much as I wanted to see the unbelievably talented team of Hall & Vikingo to advance, Baylor & Smokes are the tag team champs, and a damn fine team. Also, with Drake and Lockwood lurking outside the ring, Hall & Vikingo’s chances were already cut in half. Just a spectacular display of innovative aerial offense and superior teamwork.)

-In the back, Saquon Shugars paced back and forth while Blake Howard tried to get a word from him. Shugars was lamenting the fact that he was having to face Tristan Angels instead of competing for the NXT title. NXT Champion Grayson Waller walked up and told him that he can’t do what it takes to be a champion, and that he should focus on the task at hand. Shugars told him to sit at the monitor and watch, then made his ring entrance before they cut to a commercial break. [c]

-Kali Armstrong walked into Robert Stone’s office to complain about Wren Sinclair pulling a fast one on her last week. Stone said that because of her stellar performance in the battle royal, he arranged with AAA GM Rey Mysterio for Armstrong to challenge La Catalina tonight for the Reina de Reinas Championship. Armstrong left his office much happier than when she entered it.

(2) SAQUON SHUGARS vs. TRISTAN ANGELS

Shugars took Angels down with a hiptoss, armdrag, and dropkick. He settled into a hammerlock after another armdrag. The two engaged in some good, basic chain wrestling before Shugars turned it up a notch, got a two count, then went back to work on the left arm of Angels. Shugars thwarted Angels as he tried to remove the turnbuckle pad, then drove him to the floor. Angels lost it and threw a chair into the ring, then picked up another one and slammed it on the announce desk in outrage. I thought there might be a disqualification for a moment, but the referee seemed to be waiting for Angels to settle down. [c]

Back from the break, Angels caught Shugars with a boot to the head for a two count. They revealed that during the break, Angels pitched Shugars into the ring steps to take the advantage. He hit an elbow off the top to the back of Shugars for another near fall. He settled into a sleeper hold, but Shugars backed Angels into the corner to break the hold. Shugars fired up for some aggressive offense, but lost his balance when he attempted a top rope maneuver. On the floor, Shugars attempted a tornado DDT, but Angels shoved him off and he went splat on the floor. Angels rolled him into the ring and drove the head of Shugars into the mat with a rather sloppy knee for the three count.

WINNER: Tristan Angels at 11:08.

(Miller’s Take: This match had a pretty good flow to it until the end, when Shugars nearly crashed and burned off the top rope. They were a bit off in their execution a couple of times, but it wasn’t a bad match by any means. Angels needed this win.)

-The Progressive NXT Focus was on Tony D’Angelo, who told Myles Borne that no matter what version of Borne he gets, he won’t get the job done. He congratulated Borne on taking his shot, but said he’d knock him out with a crowbar instead of a roll of quarters.

-In the back, Wren Sinclair was shown making her way to the entrance. [c]

-The Culling (yes, apparently they still exist) was shown in their usual dark room with a soft blue light as Niko Vance asked Izzi Dame what the deal is with Zaria. Dame said she makes herself out to be this unstoppable force, but she believes she’s broken. She said she thinks it’s basically all an act to hide her insecurity. Dame said Zaria is interesting, and she wants to know what’s behind the attitude and the title. She told Vance she wants to see what’s underneath the makeup.

(Miller’s Take: Despite the fact that I hate the idea of a monster heel like Zaria being shown as insecure and bullied by another woman, I do like what Dame is doing. It fits her character so much to be less interested in winning the North American title and more interested in finding out who Zaria really is and “exposing” her.)

-Mike Rome introduced the inexplicably unsuspended #1 contender Wren Sinclair, who wished the crowd a happy Wrensday, even though it’s Tuesday. WWE dropped the ball by releasing Wendy Choo before she had a chance to move back up to NXT and wish people a happy Choosday. Sinclair said she’s been guilty of overthinking and playing it safe, but that got her nowhere. She told the crowd she took a risk last week and was scared, but realized she doesn’t have to back down anymore. She said nobody expected her to be standing in the ring as the #1 contender.

-Sinclair started to address her suspension when she was interrupted by NXT Women’s Champion Kelani Jordan, who looked as if she’d just visited Lola Vice’s hairdresser. Jordan said she committed identity theft and didn’t earn the opportunity. She refused to face Sinclair at Halloween Havoc and told her to just keep being Kendal’s sidekick. She continued to belittle Sinclair until Robert Stone interrupted. He did clarify that Sinclair’s suspension had been lifted, even though no reason was given as to why it had been lifted.

He told Jordan that she made some good points about Sinclair’s Lady Shani impersonation last week, but he was going to leave it up to the fans to decide, which is ludicrous. Of course, the fans approved of Sinclair being the #1 contender, so Stone said it was set in stone. I like that. Adam Pearce has “it is official”, so now Nick Aldis just has to come up with something catchy. An angry Jordan attempted to slam her belt into Sinclair’s face, but Sinclair ducked, took the belt from her, and drew back to knock Jordan’s head off with it. A shocked Jordan quickly dropped to the mat to avoid being belted. Sinclair dropped the belt into Jordan’s lap and stood over her confidently. [c]

-In the back, Cruz Montana gave Lizzy Rain a pep talk before answering his phone. It sounded like he was talking to his mom. As he hung up, he was attacked from behind by Dion Lennox. After he layed out Montana, he picked up his phone, hit redial, and told Montana’s mom that he would be begging for her after he thumps him at Halloween Havoc.

ARTICLE CONTINUED BELOW…

Check out the latest episode of “PWT Talks NXT” with Kelly Wells and Nate Lindberg, part of the PWTorch Dailycast line-up: CLICK HERE to stream (or search “pwtorch” on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or any other iOS or Android app to subscribe free)

[HOUR TWO]

(3) LA CATALINA (c) vs. KALI ARMSTRONG – AAA Reina de Reinas Championship Match

Armstrong put Catalina down with a shoulder block, but got outwrestled by the champ. She continued to use her power game with shoulder drives in the corner, but Catalina answered with more technical prowess. As the fight went to the floor, Armstrong bodyslammed Catalina, then pulled back the mats to expose the bare concrete. Catalina slipped out of a potentially devastating bodyslam to the concrete, threw Armstrong over the steps, then used the steps to leap onto her and take her down before they cut to a split-screen commercial break. [c]

The fight continued on the left while a grown adult mispronounced the word “liberty” as “biberty”. Back to full-screen, Catalina got a near fall with a sunset flip, then dropped Armstrong with a missile dropkick. The champion fired up and hit her unique variation of a hip attack, then dropped her on her face for a very near fall. Armstrong came back with some excellent left jabs, but couldn’t put her opponent away. Armstrong hit a snap powerslam, then ran the ropes to pick up speed for a Kali Konnection, but Catalina sidestepped her and she gingerly landed on the concrete she had exposed earlier. Armstrong sold it as if she’d pulled a Tiffany Stratton, then ate a big knee when she crawled back into the ring, leading to the three count.

WINNER: La Catalina at 10:33 to retain the AAA Reina de Reinas Championship.

(Miller’s Take: Solid match that gave La Catalina more exposure to the North American audience and a chance for the very talented Kali Armstrong to get some well-deserved TV time.)

-In the back, Myles Borne was warming up when his former NQCC stablemate, Wren Sinclair, walked past him. He asked her if it felt good to stand up for herself. She said it did, but that’s not the same thing as what he did to Tavion and called him selfish. Borne started boasting, but was interrupted by Kendal Grey, who told Sinclair that she was cleared and was excited for her to bring the NXT title back to the WrenQCC.

-A spot for something called Agent of Shadows aired. I’m not familiar with Reelshort (I’m very sheltered), but it looks interesting and apparently stars the entire WWE roster. [c]

-In the locker room, E.K. Prosper talked up Chazz “Starboy” Hall & Mini Vikingo after their loss. The Vanity Project interrupted to pour some salt in the wound. Hall challenged them to a six-man tag team match, which they accepted, saying it would be an easy W.

(4) FRAXIOM (Nathan Frazer & Axiom) vs. ROMEO MORENO & NOAM DAR – Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Quarterfinal Match

Moreno & Dar were already in the ring when Fraxiom made their ring entrance. After a brief flurry of lightning-fast chain wrestling, Frazer offered a handshake. Dar faked him out with the handshake and turned to tag Moreno instead. Frazer tagged out to his partner as well, and the pace didn’t slow down a bit. This time it was Moreno offering a handshake, which Axiom responded to with a slap to the face. When the fight went to the floor, Moreno accidentally nailed Dar with a knee, which Fraxiom took maximum advantage of before they cut to a split-screen commercial break. [c]

The screen on the right featured WWE wrestlers stopping kids from looking at stuff they shouldn’t be looking at on the internet while the tournament match continued on the left. Back to full-screen, Dar had Axiom’s leg grapevined, but he managed to grab the bottom rope for the break. Moreno and Frazer tagged in for their respective teams. Frazer hit a springboard Spanish Fly on Frazer, while Moreno crashed and burned when he attempted a springboard dive to Axiom to the floor.

Axiom got a near fall on Moreno after some classic Fraxiom teamwork. Frazer got a near fall after a frog splash, then Moreno broke up another pin attempt on his partner. Multiple pin attempts ensued with last moment kickouts. Dar finally pinned Axiom after a high/low.

WINNERS: Romeo Moreno & Noam Dar at 15:02 to advance to the semifinals.

(Miller’s Take: Speed vs. speed equals this match. We already know how good Fraxiom is, so they didn’t need this win nearly as much as Moreno & Dar, who are a phenomenal team on the rise and may very well be the sentimental favorites to win the tournament. This was 15 minutes of pure, undiluted adrenaline.)

-In the back, Blake Howard interviewed AAA Tag Team Champions The Wagner Brothers. They were interrupted by BirthRight, who touted their bloodline, but said they were, unfortunately, not taking applications. The tag champs cut a brief promo on them in Spanish, saying they’d see them next week.

-Tony D’Angelo made his ring entrance before the break. [c]

-Vic Joseph ran down next week’s card, including Lennox vs. Montana, and Dusty Cup quarterfinal matches The Creeds vs. Hank & Tank and Wagners vs. BirthRight.

(5) TONY D’ANGELO vs. MYLES BORNE – NXT Championship #1 Contender’s Match

Borne exhibited his aggressive new nature in the opening moments of the match. After brutalizing Tony D. on the outside, he rolled him back into the ring for more punishment. D’Angelo fought back and took the fight to the floor as well. He cleared off the announce table, messing up Joseph’s headset in the process. He didn’t get the job done on the announce desk, but did drop Borne hard on the separated ring steps before they cut to the last split-screen commercial break of the night. [c]

An abbreviated version of the lady becoming her auntie and liking it aired on the right while the combatants battled on the left. Back to full-screen, Borne was thumping on the former NXT champ, but showed a bit of frustration in not being able to put him away. Tony D. fired up and asked Borne if that was all he had before he cut loose on Borne with some spirited offense.

NXT Champion Grayson Waller was shown watching intently on the monitor before Borne leaped off the ropes and into a D’Angelo spear. Tony D. thwarted a Borne Again and delivered a sit-out powerbomb for a near fall. Borne came back with a snake eyes and Angle slam, then paused to look directly at a conspicuously hooded cameraman who was filming from the ring apron. When he turned back to D’Angelo, he walked into a Dead to Rights. Borne got his left shoulder up a split-second before the three count, but the referee slapped his hand against the mat for a third time anyway and called for the bell as crickets chirped in the arena.

WINNER: Tony D’Angelo at 12:46 to become the #1 contender.

(Miller’s Take: Eh. The match wasn’t setting the PC on fire to begin with, but that ending went over like a fart in church. The fans were obviously confused, as was I. I’m nearly certain (and we’ll find out in moments, I’m sure) that the hooded cameraman will reveal himself to be Tavion Heights. It makes sense for Borne to be distracted by a hooded cameraman, but the lack of reveal and botched finish just ruined the whole match.)

-After the match, D’Angelo smiled as he saw the mysterious cameraman put down the camera, then motioned for him to enter the ring as he exited. The man slowly took his hood off to reveal himself as (gasp) Tavion Heights. A seething Heights beat down Borne before delivering a particularly nasty-looking powerbomb through the announce desk.

-In the back, GM Robert Stone was talking to someone on his phone about D’Angelo challenging Waller at Halloween Havoc as he walked into his office. He found a note on his desk that read, “Make me the host of Halloween Havoc or you are cursed.” Lights flashed and the unmistakable laugh of Danhausen was heard.

FINAL THOUGHTS: The Dusty Cup matches were the stars of this show. I can’t praise those two tag team matches enough. La Catalina’s defense against Armstrong was good, with the exception of Armstrong gently landing on the concrete floor and pretending like it broke her back. I enjoyed the beatdown at the end of the main event, but that finish was very poorly executed. I can’t think of a better host for Hallowee Havoc than Danhausen.
