It came across as motivated, yet humble and gracious as to how he has gotten to this point. I wish the Hardys didn’t selfishly bigfoot this moment, but Slater did and said all the right things. I like that Slater doesn’t try to overcomplicate things.

Eddie Edwards showing slight respect for Ricky Sosa and the rest of the System seeing him side-eyed

I hope that the build to the System breakup is a bit more gradual and nuanced (even though I’ve been waiting for this moment for a while as a victim of “System fatigue”). It can’t just be that they’re cool one night and then they’re at each other’s throats over Edwards shaking Sosa’s hand after their match. A few more sensical events should happen along the way. That being said, I liked the way that the Stable reacted opposite of each other tonight. It made sense.

Apex as in-ring badasses

Zoey Serrano and Shayna Baszler do look like certified badasses, as a team, and that is something that I can’t remember in the Knockouts tag team division. I hope TNA has a clear path as to how to establish multiple credible teams for them to decimate. TNA has not successfully done this for quite some time.

Nic Nemeth being a heel foil for Trey Miguel’s ladder match win to become Leon Slater’s first title challenger

I don’t love the idea of a ladder match with random opponents randomly deciding who will be the next World Title challenger as several people in the match hadn’t done much recently to early the opportunity to be in that match. That being said, I like the idea that Nic Nemeth tried to interfere in the match yet Trey Miguel overcame the interference for the win (even though it’s ridiculous that Nemeth was acting as though he could climb the ladder and win a match he wasn’t even in). I like Miguel as Slater’s first opponent for his World Title but I do think that you will have to definitively turn Miguel heel between now and Destination X for it to have maximum intrigue and appeal.

ARTICLE CONTINUED BELOW…

Check out the latest episode of “Destination Impact” with Zac Clarke and Jerud Buhagiar, part of the PWTorch Dailycast line-up: CLICK HERE to stream (or search “pwtorch” on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or any other iOS or Android app to subscribe free)

MISSES

The Hardys Opening the show (again) and booking everything for the night

How does one exactly determine if someone loses a match intentionally? Well that was one of the weird stipulations that we got from the Hardys 35th anniversary celebration which apparently gives them the power to book an entire show. I guess the other twelve authority figures were busy tonight. Also, calling the Righteous and the SYX two of the Hardys “greatest rivals” made me roll my eyes so hard that my retinas detached. What a weird show opening promo and beginning to an episode with an already weird supposition. It just always feels like the Hardys have to be looming over everything like Amazing Reds first promo after his feel-good X-Division Title win and Leon Slater’s first promo after becoming the youngest World Champion on relevant American television of all-time.

The Hardys coming out and making both Nemeth brothers look like doofuses

The fact that the Hardys were able to come out and instantly create tension between the Nemeth brothers was so cartoonish and unbelievable based on no strife between the two prior to tonight.

Unceremoniously having the Righteous face the SYX in a big tables match with zero build

This feels like this was a match that could have had a great deal of intrigue behind it between the two somewhat similar gimmicks of these teams. Instead, we got a match that was thrown together the night of because the Hardys were given magic booking powers (which anniversary is the gift for the Vince Russo booker prize?) It was given a tables match stipulation even though these teams have literally never crossed paths previously. A ton was left of the table with this match (pun intended). It was also a rather short and anticlimactic match. You can’t just conjure first time matchups like this back when you really need them.

Rosemary-Bunny Vignettes

I say this every week, like a broken record, but these are always bad. They almost never make any sense or advance anything. The one positive is they’re almost always short.

The Hardys scheduling a match between themselves and AJ Francis & Expressions

The Hardys really should have put themselves in a match against a credible team (like Frankie Kazarian and Avery Styles) to put them over. Instead we get them in what was essentially a comedy match with Francis and a debuting Expressions that felt completely inconsequential. This win did nothing for the Hardys and was an empty way to get them on the show.

Xia Brookside having a “contractual rematch” for Indi Hartwell’s Knockout Title

I have no desire to see this match be run back.

THANK YOU FOR VISITING

HITS Leon Slater’s “thrill of victory” promo This promo was very simple, yet very passionate.
