I haven’t had cable in over 15 years, so until shows were set up for streaming their product, I missed a lot of wrestling. Hulu had a contract to show Raw and SmackDown the next day, and even showed NXT before there was a WWE Network. It wasn’t long after I cut the cord that WWE announced their network, and I had plenty to watch as a wrestling fan. Due to that decision, I missed ever having the El Rey Network.

I heard so much about this new promotion on podcasts and reading various websites that I was curious. It was expensive, but I found them available on Apple to purchase them to stream. I traveled for work at the time, and the episodes were perfect to watch on my iPad during plane rides. I would become distracted in other things, and one of the things I don’t like about streaming is how easy it is to forget about purchases made. Physical copies remind me, “You spent money, don’t waste it.”

Working in my own store that carries a lot of pro wrestling merchandise, I spend all day on Mondays with wrestling on the TV in-store. I will watch something until the start of Raw, then pick it back up the next week. In doing so, I was finally able to complete the entire series, and what a wild series it was.

Instead of an overview of a promotion of ten years ago, I thought I’d talk about the top five impressions on the product I was left with.

The Lucha Brothers

On the first episode, you saw Pentagon Jr. and Rey Fénix. They were never announced as brothers on this show, but there was a unique focus on these two characters. They were both incredible in the ring. The first time I watched years ago, I felt a little bit like I did when first watch Rey Mysterio Jr. arrive in WCW. The way Fénix worked the ropes was so unique. Pentagon had this unique charisma that you could not ignore. They were set up to be key characters, and the people running this show, including Konnan’s eye for talent, knew they had something special in these two.

Characters in General

All of the performers had origins, purpose, and gave a unique personality to the show. Throughout the four seasons, they’d have to add new talent, and would keep that focus on these additions.

Mil Muertes was a reskinned Judas Masias, who came in as a possessed killer, paired with Catrina who controlled him to do her will. Santos Escobar was under a mask as King Cuerno. A hunter who came in to stalk his prey. I could not believe how mishandled this talent was in WWE after watching him perform in “The Temple.” Ricochet, again under a mask, was Puma, Konnan’s new protege, who was trying his talent against top tier opponents for the first time.

Later acts like Marty the Moth was a crazy fan who wanted to try his hand. Killshot was a man who left the military not wanting his identity known, due to the things he had to do while enlisted. I really enjoyed seeing Jeff Cobb in the role of the promotor’s brother, brought in to wreck havoc.

My favorite character was Sexy Star. It was very unfortunate that she made the decisions she made to blackball her from a career she was very good at. A woman in an abusive relationship finally decided to stand up for herself, and become a fighter. She was able to fight off her abuser, and in doing so, realized she had everything it took to defeat men in a competitive fight. She even worked her way to being the promotion’s champion for a brief moment. Well-defined background, very good in the ring, and beautiful to attract viewers and look great on posters. Perhaps one of wrestling’s biggest losses, but that was a decision of the performer to deserve her fate of no longer being accepted.

ARTICLE CONTINUED BELOW…

Check out the latest episode of “Worse or Better” with Josh White, part of the PWTorch Dailycast line-up: CLICK HERE to stream (or search “pwtorch” on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or any other iOS or Android app to subscribe free)

Inter-Gender Wrestling

I was hesitant to accept this when I first viewed Lucha Underground, but came to not only accept it, but enjoy it. I have previously stated my appreciation for the character of Sexy Star, but I also liked seeing competent women mix it up with men, who were confident in selling offense and even taking clean losses to the women on the roster.

In a world where we go to theaters and accept Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, or Atomic Blonde as viable cinema, why can’t this extend to wrestling? I have often said that Asuka would make me more nervous to fight than many of the men on the roster. That said, I completely understand that corporate WWE will not be entertaining this again any time soon. We had Chyna as the Intercontinental Champion, but that was the exception that won’t be happening again any time soon.

I do appreciate seeing AEW dip their toe into that water, and like that it happens in TNA in occasion. I think Lucha Underground should be studied as a template, not necessarily to emulate, but to see how it can be done effectively.

Matt Striker on Commentary

I was very impressed with Matt Striker. Vampiro was by his side, and was hit and miss on his work, but Striker played off of him well, and I liked that there was what seemed to be a legitimate friendship between the two.

He explained the story, the background within the show that brought us to the point of the match you’re watching. He would talk about the stakes of winning or losing. He would be able to explain the motivation of the heel in a way that made them a threat, but one that you wanted to see lose. And, I simply enjoy the tone of his voice for an announcer. I do think he took the audience to Sunday School too often, and could have done without all of the religious references on a wrestling show, but that’s my main issue with him.

Storytelling

Lucha Underground had a small roster, which works for a one hour show. The problem can be using them all properly so that they are all relevant and not defined down to the point of not having value to the company. I felt that an excellent job was done giving every person purpose and each match had stakes that would be felt going forward. They had mapped out their seasons with the talent who was going to be the main protagonists and antagonists. Backstage vignettes were shot to develop the characters and angles further. They were shot in a Robert Rodriguez-Tele Novella style. They could be a little corny in the beginning and downright silly by the fourth season.

While the third and fourth seasons didn’t have the best of stories, they were at least focused on the story they wanted to tell. They didn’t get loose on wanting to put the efforts in; it was just silly seeing Rey Fénix die and come back to life, or the owner, Dario Cueto, be killed, just to have the same actor in a terrible costume take over as Dario’s father.

Penta was the one who grew most as a character, and each season had major stories and main events around his involvement, and the performer never failed at anything he was given.

Overall, the first two seasons are one of the best runs of wrestling television I’ve watched since the Monday Night War era, and hope it 9becomes available for a wider audience to look back on and appreciate.

(Griffin is a lifelong fan of wrestling, superheroes, and rebellious music of all forms.
