Montana and Lennox were shown walking through the parking lot of the Performance Center as Vic Joseph introduced the show.

-#1 contender Tony D’Angelo made his ring entrance and called out NXT Champion Grayson Waller, who obliged by meeting him in the ring. Waller told D’Angelo he was one of the demons on his list that he wanted to conquer. Tony D. claimed Waller resented him and was more concerned with viral moments than championships. Waller admitted to resenting him, because he said D’Angelo was chosen. Tony D. said he was a walking meme hiding behind one-liners. Waller called it “having a personality” and claimed D’Angelo left his under the fedora he used to wear. They brought up their WarGames history with NXT 2.0 as they continued their verbal sparring. Really good, believable segment.

-In the women’s locker room”earlier today”, Izzi Dame complained to the girls about packing up all of the “decorations” she left for Zaria. Skylar Raye and Layla Diggs told Dame to just leave her alone and keep it about the North American title. Dame and Diggs got into a little verbal tussle, resulting in a match being made between them tonight.

-As Joseph announced Dame vs. Diggs and The Wagner Brothers vs. BirthRight, Arianna Grace’s voice interrupted. The camera cut to BirthRight standing in the parking lot, where Grace told Vic to stop talking because the winners of the Dusty Cup have something to say. Lexis King, with his overly manicured facial hair, cut a brief promo before the group walked away. [c]

-A video package on Chantel Monroe aired. She was last seen competing on Evolve many months ago.

(1) THE WAGNER BROTHERS (El Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr. & Galeno) vs. BIRTHRIGHT (Charlie Dempsey & Lexis King) (w/Uriah Connors & Adrianna Grace) – Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Quarterfinals Match

For the uninitiated, The Wagner Brothers are third generation luchadors and the current AAA Tag Team Champions. Vic Joseph noted that Stacks Lorenzo’s absence was due to a nasty bump he took on the floor during a house show in Canada. Wagner and Dempsey began the match with some very good chain wrestling. Wagner sandbagged Dempsey on a gut-wrench suplex before both men tagged their respective partners. King laid in some blows that had zero effect on the Aztec giant, who proved that he can move for a big man before tagging out to his brother for some teamwork, south of the border-style. They went for stereo suicide dives to the floor, but Grace stood in front of her men and they stopped short. Galeno leaned over the top rope while his brother dived over him and onto the floor to take out BirthRight. [c]

Back from the break, Dempsey was stretching Wagner in the ring. A chop woke Wagner up, who laid out Dempsey before both men made hot tags. Galeno ran the ropes to pick up speed before a big, Ultimate Warrior-style splash. Dempsey broke up a close pinfall, then tagged in. All four men took each other out before the match settled back down to Wagner and Dempsey. This time it was Galeno breaking up a pin attempt. Wagner attempted a frog splash, but King got his knees up.

Zilla Fatu walked out and blasted Connors on the floor. Grace slapped him across the face, then got scared and backed off. Meanwhile, Galeno took out Dempsey on the floor. Wagner delivered a Michinoku driver to King, then tagged out to his brother, who landed a massive frog splash on King for the pin.

WINNERS: The Wagner Brothers at 13.25 to advance to the semifinals.

(Miller’s Take: The way they’ve been pushing BirthRight, I’m a bit surprised at this outcome, but I’ve not been paying much attention to how the brackets are lining up, either. While I think the AAA tag champs have zero chance of winning the tournament, it was good to see them given their flowers in this match. Zilla Fatu’s involvement made sense in the grand scheme of things, although he hasn’t impressed me much thus far.)

-After the match, the Hallo Hellraiser demolished what remained of BirthRight.

-In the back, Cutler James and Osiris Griffin told Dion Lennox that his actions were pretty harsh, even by their standards. Lennox told them that Cruz Montana had to be handled in a special way, and that there would be casualties, then beckoned them to follow him.

-An unhappy Tavion Heights was shown walking in the back before they cut to the next commercial break. [c]

-Vic Joseph announced that there would be a trunk-o-treat party at the WWE Performance Center prior to Halloween Havoc on Halloween night.

-The Progressive NXT Spotlight was on Kam Hendrix, who we haven’t seen in awhile. He showed off by catching footballs with one hand, then blindfolded.

-Tavion Heights made his ring entrance. He said he wouldn’t make the same mistake of believing Myles Borne again. He called him a backstabbing, bum-ass bitch before Borne attacked him from behind. They brawled out to the parking lot, where they were separated by officials. [c]

-Chantel Monroe stopped The Vanity Project to ask if they saw her “reflection of perfection” video. Ricky Smokes cleared his throat, and flirtatiously said, “I loved it.” Myka Lockwood snapped her fingers in front of his face and told him to lock in before ushering her men to Robert Stone’s office. Stone asked them what that business was with Mini Vikingo and Chazz “Starboy” Hall last week. He said he wanted to book a six-man tag team match with them against Vikingo, Hall, and E.K. Prosper for next week, but Vikingo wasn’t cleared to wrestle. He then informed Jackson Drake that he would be defending his North American title next week against Prosper. [c]

(2) IZZI DAME vs. LAYLA DIGGS

Dame put Diggs down with a shoulder block. Layla cartwheeled out of a headlock and an arm twist before Dame clocked her and went to work on the shoulder Diggs just recovered from. Layla got a little too fancy and ate a big boot from Dame. The fight went to the floor, where Diggs again showed off some fancy footwork in avoiding Dame, then taking her out before they cut to a split-screen commercial break. Back to full-screen, Diggs backflipped out of a clothesline attempt, then took the fight to Dame with some spirited offense. After taking out Dame, she gingerly climbed the ropes and landed a frog splash for a two-count. She slowly climbed the ropes again and missed another splash attempt, then got flipped over onto her shoulders with a running crucifix by Dame. Diggs handled herself well on offense, but missed a floating moonsault and caught a running knee from Dame for the pin.

WINNER: Izzi Dame at 10:35.

(Miller’s Take: Great showing by Diggs, who is definitely on track for a run on the main roster someday. She’s very easy on the eyes, incredibly athletic, and very talented, but just needs another year of so of seasoning. Dame’s win was unsurprising, considering her high-profile feud with North American Champion Zaria.)

-After the match, Zaria came out to confront Dame. She said she was done with the mind games and offered her a title match at Halloween Havoc. Dame accepted the match, but told her not to worry about putting the title up. A confused Zaria looked on as Dame left the ring with a smug look on her face. [c]

(3) HANK & TANK vs. THE CREED BROTHERS (Brutus & Julius) – Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Quarterfinals Match

Tank and Julius started the match, with the momentum swinging both ways early in the match before and after tags to their respective partners before they cut to a commercial break. [c]

Back from the break, Tank took the hot tag against Brutus, who soon tagged Julius. The Creeds beat down Tank, who struggled to make it to his corner, but kept getting cut off. Julius delivered a gut-wrench suplex before eating an elbow from Tank, who nearly made the tag before being dropkicked out of the ring. Hank finally took the hot tag and thumped the Brothers Creed. Brutus got taken out on the floor with a Hank & Tank sandwich, followed by Julius falling to a high/low for the upset win.

WINNERS: Hank & Tank at 11:04 to advance to the semifinals.

(Miller’s Take: Well, I didn’t see that one coming, either. Hank & Tank haven’t been presented as much more than comic relief in recent months. The Creeds came back into NXT hot, but that flame got snuffed out pretty quickly tonight.)

In the back, BirthRight whined to Robert Stone about Zilla Fatu. Charlie Dempsey wanted a match with him, but Stone said he wasn’t sure if Fatu was cleared to wrestle. Wren SInclair and Kendal Grey walked past them while talking about the contract signing with Kelani Jordan tonight. Chantel Monroe interrupted, asking them what they thought of her video. They said it was a video and she was in it, but that was the closest thing to praise they offered. [c]

-Wren Sinclair walked out, contract in hand, ready to put pen to paper. She cut a promo on Kelani Jordan and called her out to sign. As she was still talking, Jordan interrupted, saying she had a gift for her, then dragged a bloodied and battered Kendal Grey onto the stage. Sinclair ran to her aid and chased Jordan off.

-In GM Stone’s office, Zilla Fatu wanted to accept Charlie Dempsey’s challenge, but wanted to bring back the Halloween Havoc wheel to determine the match stipulation.

-Sean Legacy, Chazz “Starboy” Hall, Noam Dar, Romeo Moreno, and E.K. Prosper were chatting it up in the locker room. Legacy said DVD would be back in about two months. He questioned Saquon Shugars watching his match with Tristan Angels repeatedly, and they got into a bit of a verbal joust, but nothing outlandish.

-Emily Agard was standing outside the men’s locker room, preparing to get a word with Cruz Montana about his match with Dion Lennox. Cutler James and Osiris Griffin interrupted and pushed past her into the locker room. Cruz stood up, swinging, as wrestlers and officials rushed in to separate them. [c]

-Naraku cut a promo on Shiloh Hill, saying he’s experienced the effects of many colored mists, but said he’s ready to unleash the black mist, which will end everything. Hill was watching in the back with Lizzy Rain. He said he only has 10 days to prepare for the black mist and that the last time he experienced the orange mist, his shirt started talking to him. Chantel Monroe burst in, gushing about her brief promo spot earlier in the show. Hill took that as his cue to leave. Rains told her she’s somehow managed to annoy everyone in the last two hours, then challenged her to a match next week.

-Vic Joseph ran down next week’s card, including Dusty Cup semifinal matches Vanity Project vs. Dar & Moreno and The Wagner Brothers vs. Hank & Tank. Also, Prosper challenging Drake for the North American title.

(4) DION LENNOX vs. CRUZ MONTANA

Booker T agreed with Vic Joseph that Lennox crossed the line by calling Montana’s mother last week. Lennox charged Montana as the referee called for the bell, but Montana was prepared, and commenced to thumping Lennox. The DarkState leader regathered his composure for a brief flurry before Montana continued to deliver retribution. He landed a thunderous cannonball in the corner, followed by a crushing sit-out powerbomb for a near fall. On the floor, Lennox drove Montana hard into the ring steps. He pulled back the mats to expose the concrete floor and attempted a powerslam, but Montana slipped out and sent Lennox into the ring post before they cut to a commercial break. [c]

Back to the match, Montana hit the bullseye with a superkick to the jaw, then continued to take it to Lennox with a clothesline, elbow, and a cutter. Lennox rallied to finally take some semblance of control. He taunted Montana in the corner, yelling at him that his mother was a drug addict, he’s a loser, and his daughter will know that he’s his bitch. That woke Montana up. He fed Lennox a mouthful of foot, then took the fight to the floor. He bent Lennox over the announce desk and punched him in the face repeatedly before spearing him through the LED board at ringside as the referee counted both men out.

WINNER: No contest via countout at 8:00.

(Miller’s Take: I’m fine with the double countout given the context of this feud. The psychological warfare by Lennox didn’t seem to serve him well, as Montana seemed like a man possessed throughout, intent on destroying Lennox.)

-After the match officials and the other members of DarkState ran out to separate the men. As James and Griffin started to help Lennox to the back, he shouted one more time at Montana that he was his bitch. Montana broke free from the officials holding him back, shoved Griffin into the ring steps, swatted James aside, and bodyslammed Lennox hard onto the exposed concrete floor. He then delivered a curb stomp, driving Dion’s head into the concrete. He picked up the ring steps to smash Lennox with, but James covered his teammate and took the bullet for him. “Police” came out and handcuffed a wide-eyed Montana, who seemed to realize at that moment that he’d gone back into a dark place he didn’t want to be in, which seemed to be the intention of Lennox, as he looked a bit smug at the sight.

FINAL THOUGHTS: Light on in-ring action this week, but heavy on drama and buildup towards Halloween Havoc. The Dusty Cup matches left a bit to be desired this week, possibly because last week’s matches were so outstanding. I’m looking for the finals to come down to Dar & Moreno vs. The Wagner Brothers, so we’ll see how accurate my crystal ball is. I’m surprised at the push for Chantel Monroe, who really didn’t do anything noteworthy in Evolve and had seemingly been forgotten, so it’s not like an NXT call-up was imminent. Jordan vs. Sinclair is shaping up to be a potential show-stealer, but it’s highly unlikely that Lani’s title reign is close to being over yet. D’Angelo challenging Waller is coming along nicely, but I echo the sentiments regarding Jordan’s title reign. I’m really looking forward to Borne vs. Tavion as well. Great buildup to Halloween night.
