It’s still a strong lineup, with the AEW World Champion challenging for the IWGP Tag Team Championship being the match with the broadest appeal. The finals of the Super Junior Tag League and a Global Championship defence were also featured.

(1) AARON WOLF & MASTER WATO & KUUKAI vs. UNITED EMPIRE (Francesco Akira & Jakob Austin Young & Zane Jay)

An interesting note with this ongoing United Empire story is that Akira and Young made individual entrances throughout SJTL. When Will Ospreay was leading the faction, that rarely happened. Wolf spent a lot of time in the ring here, probably to remind fans of the fact that he’s a singles champion and wants to be in World Tag League. He continues to develop as a pro wrestler and I will admit that he has surpassed what I feared his ceiling would be. Nothing remarkable about the match itself, aside from perhaps the fact that it was Young who tapped out and not Zane Jay. We didn’t even see much tension among the United Empire trio.

WINNERS: Wolf, Kuukai, and Wato via submission at 5:57 (**).

(2) TITAN & DAIKI NAGAI & GEDO vs. MISTICO & KUSHIDA & MASATORA YASUDA

I’m glad they did this match to allow Nagai and Yasuda to square off after being in opposite blocks. The added fun of Titan and Mistico was likely more exciting for the lucha fans among you than it was for me. I was slightly disappointed that Nick Wayne was not involved, but maybe had a flight to catch and then a boat to catch. Gedo looked like he would rather be literally anywhere else than making his entrance for this match.

The wrestlers knew what everyone wanted to see, and they gave it to us right away. Titan and Mistico led off with a teaser, then Nagai and Yasuda tagged in and went at it with the fire you would expect from two almost-no-longer Young Lions. Finally Kushida tapped out Gedo with the Hoverboard Lock while Yasuda held Nagai in a Boston crab and Mistico subdued Titan with La Mistica. Paint by numbers stuff, but there’s nothing wrong with that in a prelim tag match. I kind of expected a little more from Yasuda and Nagai, but they seemed to be under a bit of a time crunch.

WINNERS: Mistico, Kushida, and Yadua via submission at 6:48 (**).

(3) TMDK (Hartley Jackson & Ryohei Oiwa) vs. THE SWIRL (Lee Johnson & Blake Christian)

A weird choice for The Swirl to face two big heavyweights right after an impressive SJTL debut in which they finished 4-1 but also proved to be a team to watch for the future. Of course in AEW or ROH The Swirl would be used to wrestling bigger guys but it’s not the norm in Japan. There was some suggestion of Oiwa and Jackson competing in World Tag League together, and all I can say to that is “I hope not.”

It’s hard to find much to say on this one.The Swirl got to show their trademark spots, Jackson got to be Generic Big Man no. 17, and Oiwa got to squeeze Johnson’s head like a grape. It was just kind of there. And then of course MJW appeared on the big screen to run down NJPW and Oiwa and reissue his challenge for his “real” World Championship. This time he named the place: Wrestle Kingdom. It will of course shock you to hear that Oiwa accepted the challenge.

That match is going to be interesting. I cannot imagine Oiwa winning and being able to lay claim to MJF’s pride and joy, but I also think it’s a weird choice to have Oiwa lose on that stage with that opponent. There seems to be a fascination in New Japan with making their next generation of stars lose a series of high-profile matches before they get to win the big one, and I tend to think that does more harm than good.

WINNERS: TMDK via submission at 7:23 (*½).

(4) RYUSUKE TAGUCHI & KAZUMA SUMI & TORU YANO & YUYA UEMURA vs. HOUSE OF TORTURE (Douki & Ren Narita & Shun Skywalker & Yoshinobu Kanemaru)

Poor Yuya Uemura. From being considered a legitimate world title contender to playing second fiddle to Toru Yano’s challenge of Shun Skywalker for the TV title. As an aside, I find Skywalker incredibly uncomfortable to watch. More accurately, I find his matches hard to listen to due to his bizarre wailing. Thankfully he was shoved into House of Torture so I don’t have to suffer through his matches separately.

If the previous match was nondescript, this was worse. The only bright spot was that Sumi had his best outing of the tour…in the last match, for the minute or so he was in the ring. Yikes.

WINNERS: Yano, Uemura, Sumi, and Taguchi via pinfall at 8:05 (*).

(5) HOUSE OF TORTURE (Sho & Dick Togo & Yujiro Takahashi) vs. YOH & HYO & SHOTA UMINO

Ah yes, the Myon-Myon Liberation Battle. Poor Shota Umino, from world title challenger to a match for custody of a stuffed leopard. I will give them the benefit of the doubt and say that this was an effort to humanize Umino somewhat and take some of that cold edge away. Then they made their entrance with Umino collared and being brought to the ring by Hyo and Yoh, who both held their own silver leash. I reiterate: Poor Shota Umino. Remember when he was the next Ace of New Japan? Pepperidge Farm doesn’t even believe that happened. I love Hyo and Yoh together, so at least there is some positive here. What’s that? Yujiro was in the match too? I quit. Someone else can finish the recap of this one.

Kenta Sato chased Dick Togo while on all fours like a big cat. I am not making that up. Hyo hit the Samson Driver, which always looks awkward, on Dick Togo to pick up the win and free Myon-Myon and Kuro-Myon from the evil clutches of House of Torture. Umino produced some handcuffs, and they “arrested” Togo for his sins against Myon-Myon. Wrestling in 2026 is wild.

Yoh remained in the ring while his partners took Togo and the leopards to the back Because you have seen wrestling before, you know that means a title challenge.A hooded silhouette appeared on the screen and, with a distorted voice, challenged Yoh for a match at Wrestle Kingdom. The figure said that if Yoh lost he could never set foot in a New Japan ring again. The lights came back up and the hooded figure was in the ring. He tried to jump Yoh and failed. Yoh unmasked him and it was of course Sho. Yoh accepted the challenge but said the condition was not fair. He said that if Yoh won, Sho would be kicked out of House of Torture and would have to team with Yoh again as Roppongi 3K. OK I actually love that stipulation, and it gives us the first real singles match between the two. Last time they tried, Yoh got injured in the opening minutes.

WINNERS: Yoh, Hyo, Myon-Myon, and Umino via pinfall at 6:53 (*1/2).

(6) SHINGO TAKAGI & JEFF COBB vs. DEATH RIDERS (Jon Moxley & Wheeler Yuta)

As President and founder of the Wheeler Yuta fan club I was so happy to see him as the partner for Moxley here. On the face of it this match existed to build to the Moxley-Shingo match that we know is coming, but I can’t help but feel there was some level of audition in here for Jeff Cobb to come to AEW. The match was good, if uneventful. Cobb pinned Yuta after a Tour of the Islands, which was the expected outcome. What came after that was the strange part, with Moxley jumping Cobb after the bell. Shingo made the save and Moxley fled up the ramp, leaving Yuta to get dropped on his head with a Shingo Death Rider. Shingo formally issued the challenge for Wrestle Kingdom, and not a soul was surprised. Genuinely nothing special, but much better than anything else on the night so far.

WINNERS: Cobb and Takagi via pinfall at 14:03 (***).

(7) KNOCKOUT BROTHERS (Yuto-Ice & Oskar) (C) vs. UNITED EMPIRE (Will Ospreay & Callum Newman) – IWGP Tag Team Championship match

This match was widely expected to be the tipping point that finally upset the United Empire apple cart. Newman and Ospreay’s storyline approaches to what United Empire should be and how it should go about things had been clashing for a full year with no resolution, and neither man really wanted to be teaming with the other. It’s worth noting that Jay and Young came out with Newman while Akira followed Ospreay to the ring. Hardly surprising, but noteworthy. If you ignore their ill-advised forays into singles competition in the New Japan Cup and the G1 (and you should), Knockout Brothers have been a revelation since coming back from excursion. Even if Oskar barely looks old enough to be out of the house after 8pm.

Newman jumped Oskar before the bell, immediately leading to consternation from Ospreay. That would be short-lived as Ospreay seemed to be OK with cutting a few corners, tripping Oskar from outside and whipping him into a barricade. The commentators reminded us that Ospreay said he was coming to Japan to do things Callum’s way, not to take control of the stable. The needle was going to be a difficult one to thread; Newman needed to look strong, Ospreay needed to look stronger, and the champs needed to retain without looking like it was a fluke and only due to the in-fighting. The key moment came after Newman pushed Ospreay into the ref and then kicked Oskar in the groin. Newman tried to use a chair but Ospreay stopped him. Jay got on the apron to yell at Ospreay and got his clock cleaned. Newman swung the chair at Ospreay who caught it and decked Newman with a stiff elbow. He berated Newman before helping him up. The dissension allowed KOB to recover.

Ospreay kicked out of a series of big moves, including a chokeslam that went so high he came down with snow on his boots. Newman made the save but got taken out by an Alarm Clock from Ice. Ospreay hit a Hidden Blade to Ice and then to Oskar, and lifted him up for Stormbreaker. For some reason Newman came into the ring with a chair and took an almighty swing, seemingly at Ospreay. Ospreay dropped Oskar and moved, meaning the chair hit Oskar and caused an extremely rare disqualification. And then of course the explosion happened. Newman leveled Akira with a lariat as part of the fracas. Newman challenged Ospreay for Wrestle Kingdom, which also should surprise nobody. Oskar was livid as he left ringside.

God I hated that finish. It made no sense whatsoever.

WINNERS: Knockout Brothers via disqualification at 18:18 to retain the IWGP Tag Team Championship (***1/2).

(8) BOLTIN OLEG vs. KENNY OMEGA vs. YOTA TSUJI

From a rare disqualification to a rare triple threat match and the biggest match of Oleg’s career. The rules behind this match were kind of foggy, and at no point during the entrances did either commentator break it down. They did however mention that Oleg had never had a three-way match in his life, and Tsuji had only had one other one. The initial challenge seemed to say that Omega would only challenge Tsuji for the title if he pinned Tsuji, but during the match Chris Charlton said that Omega would challenge Tsuji no matter who he pinned. Meanwhile Oleg had a legit claim to a title shot, having beaten Tsuji during the G1. Well that might explain why they didn’t talk about the stipulation earlier.

I’ve been quite critical of Tsuji, not because he isn’t good but more because he isn’t great. Most IWGP champions in the last decade or more have been great. He has all the potential in the world to get there but until very recently I had not seen any improvement from the guy who came back from excursion and immediately challenged Tetsuya Naito for the world title. That said, he’s one of those wrestlers who doesn’t have bad matches. Omega is not 2018 Omega but he’s still one of the best in the world. Oleg is by far the least talented of the three but by no means is he a slouch. Really there was no way on paper for this match to be bad.

There was an absolutely ridiculous spot around the eight-minute mark where Omega looked to be setting up for a super One-Winged Angel, but Oleg came up behind them and hit a German suplex to both men off the top rope. It’s hard to come up with a move I have never seen in my forty years of fandom, but they managed it. Oleg had Omega up for a Kamikaze only to be met with a Gene Blaster by Tsuji mid-move. Omega hit a One-Winged Angel on Oleg but declined to cover him, preferring to try and pin the champ. One V-Trigger and One-Winged Angel later, he did just that.

Easily the best match of Oleg’s career, and he came across as a force here. I would have thought the match would go longer, but I suppose with two more matches on the card they needed to be reasonable on length. They went all-out for the time they had. Omega seemed pretty gassed by the end, but that could be down to the travel and the fact that Oleg is a big boy. The outcome was predictable but the match was good enough to make up for that. I can’t help but feel short-changed, though. Maybe because the match went under fifteen minutes?

WINNER: Kenny Omega via pinfall at 12:50 (****).

(9) TMDK (Robbie Eagles & Kosei Fujita) vs. ROBBIE X & TAIJI ISHIMORI – Super Junior Tag League Finals

I would imagine most New Japan watchers would have had these two teams in their predicted finals. Every now and then it behooves a booker to “go chalk” and just let the favourites go through, and that has not happened in a while in New Japan. I do think that the choices made in the booking of the tournament contributed heavily to the feeling that the whole thing was phoned in and not really given much thought.

None of that is the fault of these two teams, who worked hard each night and who were tied 2-2 in the all-time head-to-head. With the tag champs not being fully in the tournament and with one half of that team being contracted elsewhere, there was no obvious choice to win and make the Wrestle Kingdom card. That is all assuming that El Desperado is cleared in time.

It was immediately clear that these two teams knew each other inside out. The match was an almost non-stop sprint that was remarkably clean given how fast they were going. Early in his New Japan run X had something of a reputation for trying to do too much and botching as a result, but he seems to have cured that ill. The two Robbies had some breathtaking exchanges, but they were surpassed by the finishing sequence between Fujita and Ishimori.Fujita went for the Thrill Ride, Ishimori countered into a small package, and last year’s defeated finalists were this year’s tournament winners.

Before the celebrations could happen, Mistico came down to the ring with both belts. He said that Desperado would be out for some time, so he was surrendering the belts. He said he wanted to be the first challenger, whether his partner was American, Japanese, or Mexican. Ishimori asked TMDK how they felt about that, and clearly they were less than thrilled. So being the magnanimous fellow that he is, Ishimori demanded that the titles be made vacant and that the titles be contested in a three-way match at Wrestle Kingdom. Probably the best way to handle an awkward situation honestly. Fantastic match, as you would expect.

WINNERS: Ishimori and Robbie X via pinfall at 11:08 to win the 2026 Super Junior Tag League (****1/4).

(10) GABE KIDD (c) vs TAICHI – IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship match

As the commentators cut to the video previewing this match, I could have sworn they used the words “Taichi” and “main event” in the same sentence without the words “not in” involved. It was at this point I pinched myself, but I was in fact awake. He looked resplendent, nay imperial, in his white feathered robe. I wish I could explain why Kidd’s wanton destruction of and disrespect for the Global belt bothered me so much, but it really does.

The match was on a hiding to nothing having to follow two absolute belters. Kidd waffled Taichi with a lariat before the bell and tried to get a cheap win, but referee Red Shoes refused to count as the bell had not yet rung. Kidd spent the next five minutes just beating Taichi senseless. The elbow and kick that Taichi used to shift the momentum looked absolutely brutal and sounded even worse. They told the story throughout of Gabe’s disrespect not just for his belt and the company but for his opponent, the fans, the ringside furniture, the ring attendants, and the oba-san in the third row. The big spot in the match saw Kidd erect a table on the outside and then piledrive Taichi off the apron and through the table, cutting himself in two places on his back in the process.

That would not be the end though as Kidd’s hubris allowed Taichi a way back in. After a series of high-impact moves Taichi hit a back drop driver for a near fall. Kidd escaped Black Mephisto and hit a piledriver and a running knee strike, but Taichi fought back and hit a Ganso Bomb! He followed up with a powerbomb for a near fall as the crowd got louder in support. They kept on exchanging huge moves and near falls, but more to the point they chose moves that called back to Kings Road and to Taichi’s past. The Ganso Bomb was just the start; we had a pair of Gotch-style piledrivers from Kidd (à la Minoru Suzuki), Kawada-style kicks from Taichi, a missed moonsault from Kidd for Great Muta, a burning lariat from Taichi…all interspersed with stiff, loud elbow strikes. This was the Japanese version of Cena vs Styles – a love letter to pro wrestling in a less hokey way. This is what Fighting Spirit looks like.

Unlike a lot of matches with multiple last-second kickouts, they made sure that the moves being kiocked out of were either rarely used as finishers or there was a delay before the cover. That sort of logic is sadly all too rare in today’s wrestling, to the point where people kick out of ridiculous things on weekly television. Here the kickouts could all be reasoned away….until Taichi kicked out of a super Destroyer, a piledriver, and a lariat. To be fair that sequence was immediately followed up by a wrist clutch screwdriver to give Kidd the hard-earned win. That was an incredible match, completely different from the two bangers before it, and a well-executed tribute to Taichi and his career.

WINNER: Gabe Kidd via pinfall at 30:01 to retain the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship (****½).

Kidd got on the mic after his win and demanded Tanahashi come into the ring and put the remains of the Global title around Kidd’s waist. Tanahashi obliged, Kidd offered a handshake, and of course nailed Tanahashi with an elbow before dropping him with a piledriver. Yuya Uemura came down to the ring like greased lightning to make the save, whereupon he challenged Kidd, Kidd shook his finger to decline the offer, and as the camera pulled back we saw Moxley in the ring behind Uemura. Moxley dropped him with a Death Rider, which prompted Takagi to come out and try to make the save, but he too was dropped with a Death Rider. Moxley said they would see Tanahashi at the Tokyo Dome, and they left Tanahashi, Uemura, and Shingo laying in the ring surrounded by streamers.

Final thoughts: After that main event it’s hard to remember that the SJTL finals took place on this card.. I mentioned earlier that the tournament this year felt like an afterthought. The match orders throughout were a big factor there, as we had a Young Lion team in the main or semi-main event of all but one show they were on. The final night for each block was also devoid of any real tension, as in each case only one team in the main event had a shot at the finals. At least the climax of the tournament was handled well.

The rest of the card built beautifully to a crescendo. That’s an underrated skill for a booker.None of the early matches on the card felt the need to outshine the big drawing points. Take note, AEW. The main event…well I could gush about it for a while. It was a very different style of match from the norm these days, but it’s not unusual for Japan. It was a throwback, and Taichi rolled back his own clock to match. If he wanted to retire, this match would be a great note on which to end. I still can’t shake the feeling that the three-way match was lacking something. It was still excellent, but it was like a delicious meal with a serving size that didn’t quite fill you up. It always comes back to food, doesn’t it?

THANK YOU FOR VISITING

NJPW POWER STRUGGLE 2026 REPORT NOVEMBER 3, 2026 SUN PLAZA HALL HIROSHIMA, JAPAN AIRED LIVE ON NJPW WORLD Walker Stewart and Chris Charlton were on commentary for a rare card that isn’t headlined by a […]

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

18,6945,542

post-224623","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-tvshowsandevents","category-japantvreports","category-new-japan-ppvs
["GET
