It was the right call. Sonjay Dutt is a fine mid-card wrestler but he shouldn’t have been cast as the face of the division in 2017. I’m still not feeling the Caleb Konley/Lee alliance since they just went through this with Andrew Everett/Lee. Maybe the two will begin to develop some chemistry in the future. For now, though, I’d rather see Lee on his own and actually treated as a serious threat in the ring.

Taya Squashes: A good introductory squash match, the kind that Kongo Kong was having not too long ago (remember when he meant something?). Taya put on a dominant performance, made her opponent look like a scrub, and showed some great facial expressions. I’d like to see her have a series of these massacres, but what we saw later in the night leads me to believe they’ll move quickly with her.

Ki vs. Impact: I was pretty excited to see this match air at 9:30 central time. I thought we were in store for 20 minutes of action. We got about 11. Still, what we saw was great. Low Ki and Johnny Impact worked really well together in the time they were given. Ki’s offense remains among the best in the business and Impact finally got to look impressive in a match. In another wrestling universe, with the right build behind it, I would have loved to have seen these two main event Bound for Glory.

MISSES

Pagano’s Debut: It would be hard for GFW to have come up with something more lackluster for a debuting wrestler than what Pagano got. When someone receives vignettes on TV, they usually get to look like a star for a bit. Not so for Impact’s newest clown (I hope you’re doing well Crazzy Steve!). He ran out to attack EC III, then was chased off by Eddie Edwards. That was it for “one of the most dangerous men in Mexico.” He looked less like Doink and more like Dink.

OVE vs. LAX: GFW aired another one of those weird videos where they show us a match from another promotion (one in which many more fans are in attendance), but then don’t actually give us the match and instead show us more of a weird music video of it. In the words of Jay Sherman, “It stinks!”

Borash Is Kind of Bad: It’s hard to dislike Jeremy Borash; he seems like a jovial fellow. He’s also not Josh Mathews, so he has that going for him. However, I’ve come to realize he’s just not cut out to be a play-by-play announcer. During major moments, he has the enthusiasm of a guy watching his neighbor mow their lawn. He somehow hasn’t learned how to do the hard sell or show any passion for big angles. It’s kind of baffling considering he’s been in the business so long. He sounded like he was getting ready for bed during the main event brawl and it was really distracting. Does someone in GFW still have Mike Tenay’s number?

Karen’s Gotta Karen: Karen Jarrett and Shane McMahon are probably my two least favorite acts in wrestling right now. But at least Shane can wrestle. Karen gets screen time and tries to act like a badass and nothing is ever going to come from it. GFW wasted absolutely zero time casting Taya as the new Sienna by having her get right in Karen’s face, which seems incredibly unnecessary from every conceivable angle. But hey, Karen got on TV, so hopefully her ego enjoyed the segment, because it’s likely no one else did.

Global Forged: Yikes. Maybe the rumors of Scott D’Amore loaning Jeff Jarrett $300,000 are true. How else can you explain him finding this much screen time for something that looks so amazingly crappy? Global Forged is like Tough Enough, but with worse talent, worse lighting, worse sound, a cheap looking grey curtain and…well, no, that’s about it. Cancel it before it airs.

NOW CHECK OUT LAST WEEK’S COLUMN: GFW IMPACT HITS & MISSES 9/7: Rosemary’s beatdown, Drake vs. Sydal, Lashley at TripleMania, Crazy Laurel, Low Ki’s promo

THANK YOU FOR VISITING

HITS Trevor Lee Wins Gold: The most underutilized GFW wrestler of 2017 has won gold once again.
