He printed about 150 copies and just figured he\u2019d hand them out to fans in attendance. Little did he know that he was laying the groundwork for what has become the premier independent wrestling trading card set in the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never expected any of this,\u201d Ubben (@BrianDaBrain on Twitter) said during a recent Torch interview. \u201cI was just doing this for fun. I can&#8217;t thank Chris Smith (who printed the cards) enough. It&#8217;s crazy. I can&#8217;t thank Highspots enough either for approaching me at BOLA in 2016 and wanting to take it to another level. And each year since, we try to make them better.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwtorch.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/post\/2018\/10\/image1-2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-67562 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pwtorch.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/post\/2018\/10\/image1-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pwtorch.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/post\/2018\/10\/image1-2.jpeg 751w, https:\/\/www.pwtorch.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/post\/2018\/10\/image1-2-217x300.jpeg 217w, https:\/\/www.pwtorch.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/post\/2018\/10\/image1-2-742x1024.jpeg 742w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ubben\u2019s 2018 BOLA trading cards were shipped to collectors and handed out at the event in September. Ubben and Smith printed 150 sets, but Highspots also printed hundreds more to ship out with the company\u2019s monthly wrestling box. The set is comprised of 24 cards, one for each BOLA competitor, and four bonus cards.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016 and 2017, Ubben based his design on classic WCW trading card sets. The 2018 set has its own unique design, complete with a throwback feel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to do an homage to old school baseball and basketball cards,\u201d Ubben said. \u201cI watched Black Panther and was so inspired by the different color schemes of the different tribes that I immediately realized the cards should have different color schemes as well. I wanted the cards this year to be vibrant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwtorch.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/post\/2018\/10\/image2-2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-67563 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pwtorch.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/post\/2018\/10\/image2-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pwtorch.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/post\/2018\/10\/image2-2.jpeg 751w, https:\/\/www.pwtorch.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/post\/2018\/10\/image2-2-217x300.jpeg 217w, https:\/\/www.pwtorch.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/post\/2018\/10\/image2-2-742x1024.jpeg 742w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>This year\u2019s set includes some of the hottest independent talent and stars from around the world, including Shingo Takagi, Bandido, PCO, Jeff Cobb, Walter, Joey Janela, Brody King, Trevor Lee, Rey Horus and more.<\/p>\n<p>Each card has its own color scheme unique to the wrestler on the card. The photo that Ubben chose for Darby Allin, for example, was black and white, so the card had a black and white color scheme. DJZ is pictured in his multicolored entrance gear, so his is one of the most colorful cards in the set.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think my favorite is the DJZ card because of the Miami Vice color scheme,\u201d Ubben said. \u201cIt just fit his character. It&#8217;s the brightest and every time a person see&#8217;s that particular card the first time, they pop big time.\u201d<\/p><div id=\"pwtor-3387144945\" class=\"pwtor-content pwtor-entity-placement\"><div align=\"center\" data-freestar-ad=\"__336x280 __336x280\" id=\"pwtorchcom_test_300x250\">\r\n  <script data-cfasync=\"false\" type=\"text\/javascript\">\r\n    freestar.config.enabled_slots.push({ placementName: \"pwtorchcom_test_300x250\", slotId: \"pwtorchcom_test_300x250\" });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>There are also subtle differences on each card. While most have a star in the bottom right corner, others have an icon or image unique to a particular wrestler. For example, PCO\u2019s card has a fleur-de-lis, while David Starr\u2019s card has a Star of David.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwtorch.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/post\/2018\/10\/image3-2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-67564 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pwtorch.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/post\/2018\/10\/image3-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pwtorch.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/post\/2018\/10\/image3-2.jpeg 751w, https:\/\/www.pwtorch.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/post\/2018\/10\/image3-2-217x300.jpeg 217w, https:\/\/www.pwtorch.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/post\/2018\/10\/image3-2-742x1024.jpeg 742w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ubben is also fond of the card of Chris Brookes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhenever I see a promo picture of him, he&#8217;s wearing the leather jacket,\u201d Ubben said. \u201cIt made me think of the Rolling Stones\u2019 \u2018Sticky Fingers\u2019 and George Michael\u2019s \u2018Faith\u2019 album covers. I wanted to emulate that in the background of the card. It came out fantastic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brookes ultimately didn\u2019t make the tournament, and was replaced by Sammy Guevara. For night two of the tournament, Ubben actually designed a printed some Guevara cards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot many people wanted them,\u201d Ubben said. \u201cSorry Sammy. He has heat with a lot of fans at PWG. I was also worried people would just rip the cards in his face, so I didn&#8217;t print too many replacements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each year Ubben has created four bonus cards of wrestlers and other personalities who aren\u2019t in the tournament but have an association with PWG. This year\u2019s four bonus cards were Human Tornado, \u201cSpeedball\u201d Mike Bailey, the Super Smash Bros. and the Legion Hall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwtorch.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/post\/2018\/10\/CollectiblesColumnBox2c.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-67569 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pwtorch.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/post\/2018\/10\/CollectiblesColumnBox2c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pwtorch.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/post\/2018\/10\/CollectiblesColumnBox2c.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.pwtorch.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/post\/2018\/10\/CollectiblesColumnBox2c-300x281.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pwtorch.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/post\/2018\/10\/CollectiblesColumnBox2c-768x720.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.pwtorch.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/post\/2018\/10\/CollectiblesColumnBox2c-1024x960.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a>\u201cThe theme for the bonus cards this year was essentially, \u2018don&#8217;t you forget about me,\u2019\u201d Ubben said. \u201cI felt it was like a reminder saying, \u2018hey, we didn&#8217;t forget about you and we miss you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ubben noted that the BOLA cards wouldn\u2019t have been possible without the help of several people. Smith printed the cards, and Ubben\u2019s friend Eric Ex helped gather photographers and writers from around the world since many of the wrestlers don\u2019t regularly wrestle in the U.S. Photography for the cards was provided by Mikey Nolan, Scott Lesh, Joey Defalco, Jon Washer, Sean Eric and Jesse Solomon. The text on the card backs were written by Tim Teresi, James Ross, Dave Fallas, Rob Viper, Jim Smallman, Derek Walker, John Carroll, Rob Naylor, Stuart Rodgers and Matthew Grant.<\/p><div id=\"pwtor-3587824815\" class=\"pwtor-content-1 pwtor-entity-placement\"><!-- Tag ID: pwtorchcom_test_300x600 -->\r\n<div align=\"center\" data-freestar-ad=\"__336x280 __300x600\" id=\"pwtorchcom_test_300x600\">\r\n  <script data-cfasync=\"false\" type=\"text\/javascript\">\r\n    freestar.config.enabled_slots.push({ placementName: \"pwtorchcom_test_300x600\", slotId: \"pwtorchcom_test_300x600\" });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Ubben\u2019s work on the BOLA sets from the last three years has also given him the opportunity to design cards for other promotions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight after the BOLA cards went into production this year, Dr. Keith hit me up and asked to a set for AAW (the Illinois-based All American Wrestling),\u201d Ubben said. \u201cI immediately said yes. Those came out fantastic as well. That&#8217;s when I realized I can do more than just PWG. I&#8217;m open to working with different companies if possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ubben is all out of this year\u2019s sets, but he suggested contacting Highspots.com to see if they have any more in stock.
