EST<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>BY FRANK PETEANI (@FrankPeteani), PWTORCH SPECIALIST<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Announcers: Tom Phillips, Byron Saxton, and Corey Graves<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Arena and Items Advertised by WWE<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Last night we wrapped up the Raw portion of the build to the Royal Rumble.\u00a0 Tonight, we do the same for Smackdown.\u00a0 WWE arrives at the Intrust Bank Arena in Wichita, KS.\u00a0 The arena opened for business in January of 2010, and last hosted Smackdown back in June of 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what\u2019s on the menu for tonight according to <a href=\"http:\/\/wwe.com\/\">WWE.com<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rey Mysterio to face Andrade in a 2-out-of-three falls match<\/li>\n<li>Vince McMahon to moderate a face-to-face with A.J. Styles and WWE Champion Daniel Bryan<\/li>\n<li>After weeks of personal attacks, Naomi and Mandy Rose to square off<\/li>\n<li>Miz with Shane to battle Cesaro with Sheamus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mustafa Ali vs. Samoa Joe was announced on Saturday via WWE\u2019s Twitter feed, but it\u2019s not in their preview.\u00a0 I have looked and don\u2019t see any indication that it\u2019s been cancelled, but things are certainly subject to change.\u00a0 I will preview it anyway in this report in the event it does take place.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Rey Mysterio vs. Andrade &#8211; Two out of Three Falls<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Last week, Andrade (just Andrade now, no more \u201cCien\u201d Almas) defeated Rey Mysterio in their second encounter.\u00a0 Rey had defeated Andrade in their first match back in November of 2018.\u00a0 Two weeks ago, Andrade pinned Rey in a tag match featuring he and Samoa Joe with Mustafa Ali being Rey\u2019s partner.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter was abuzz about the match last week going into the show.\u00a0 WWE acknowledged it prior to the match beginning.\u00a0 When the contest started it did not disappoint.\u00a0 Andrade ultimately defeated Rey by hitting his signature hammerlock DDT off the second rope.<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, WWE.com announced these two would go at it in a 2-out-of-3 falls match.<\/p>\n<p><em>Frank\u2019s Analysis:\u00a0 On one hand, you\u2019d want to see this feud saved for a bigger stage.\u00a0 On the other, you can\u2019t go wrong with a feud between these two.\u00a0 Despite them being in character in the ring, you can see the respect they have for one another especially from Andrade, who grew up idolizing Mysterio.\u00a0 This could potentially be a long-term feud which despite being used on TV already, could lead to bigger matches at a PPV or dare I say WrestleMania.\u00a0 While not ideal, a triple threat on the big stage is not out of the question for Rusev defending the U.S. Championship against these two.\u00a0 Dare I say you throw in Shinsuke Nakamura for a fatal-four way?\u00a0 I realize I\u2019m jumping about five steps, but it is WrestleMania season and one can\u2019t help but try to figure out where things are going.<\/em><\/p><div id=\"pwtor-3818953210\" class=\"pwtor-content pwtor-entity-placement\"><div align=\"center\" data-freestar-ad=\"__336x280 __336x280\" id=\"pwtorchcom_test_300x250\">\r\n  <script data-cfasync=\"false\" type=\"text\/javascript\">\r\n    freestar.config.enabled_slots.push({ placementName: \"pwtorchcom_test_300x250\", slotId: \"pwtorchcom_test_300x250\" });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Mustafa Ali vs. Samoa Joe<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Two weeks ago, as I mentioned earlier, Samoa Joe was on the winning end of a tag team match featuring he and Andrade (\u201cCien\u201d Almas at the time ;o).\u00a0 They defeated Mustafa Ali and Rey Mysterio.\u00a0 Last week, Joe and Ali (typing that makes me think of Smokin\u2019 Joe Frazier vs. Mohammed Ali) were to face off in a one-on-one match.<\/p>\n<p>Before the bell could ring, Joe attacked Ali while he was making his ring entrance.\u00a0 The attack was so brutal that the match never started, and Joe walked away with a sinister smile on his face.\u00a0 Later on, Kayla Braxton interviewed Joe and he discussed the attack and his prospects of winning the Royal Rumble.<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, WWE.com announced Ali and Joe would try it again tonight.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a little trash talk from Joe on Twitter:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SamoaJoe?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SamoaJoe<\/a> has some bad news for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MustafaAliWWE?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@MustafaAliWWE<\/a> heading into their match this Tuesday on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SDLive?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SDLive<\/a>.  Will these two tear each other apart before <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/RoyalRumble?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#RoyalRumble<\/a>? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/by5ZLrJr7Y\">pic.twitter.com\/by5ZLrJr7Y<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; WWE (@WWE) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WWE\/status\/1087139043702390784?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 21, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><em>Frank\u2019s Analysis:\u00a0 Joe is good, plain and simple.\u00a0 He knows how to be a heel and knows how to cut a heel promo.\u00a0 You just wonder if WWE is going to get behind him and actually win something.\u00a0 I\u2019m not saying titles are the only way to define success, but his never winning the WWE Championship from A.J. Styles last year and not winning a big match recently certainly stands out.\u00a0 I still say he\u2019s a dark horse candidate to win the Royal Rumble.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>One thing WWE needs to change is acknowledging better that matches will not take place.\u00a0 Have the ring announcer say something like \u201cdue to Mustafa Ali\u2019s condition, the referee has decided this match will not start.\u201d\u00a0 Let the fans have some anguish over that so that when the \u201crematch\u201d takes place, it\u2019s a bigger deal and they\u2019ll be happy to see Joe \u201cget his\u201d if that\u2019s how it\u2019s booked.\u00a0 This has been discussed recently on several Wade Keller podcasts here at PWTorch.\u00a0 Matches not starting, segments ending abruptly, match finishes not acknowledged, and other issues of the like are not taken seriously by the announce team which makes such things feel less important.<\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Vince McMahon Moderates a Face-to-Face with A.J. Styles and WWE Champion Daniel Bryan<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A.J. Styles is set to challenge Daniel Bryan for the WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble.\u00a0 He previously came up short at TLC in December but earned another match via winning a fatal-five way.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, A.J. Styles went out into the concession stands and in a matter of speaking, countered what Daniel Bryan did a week earlier.\u00a0 He stood in front of a table with hot dogs, popcorn, and soda and said everyone should have whatever they want (The hot dogs did look good though.\u00a0 I\u2019ll admit I\u2019m a sucker for a dog with relish and mustard on a top-sliced bun.).\u00a0 He then went towards a stand with a bunch of his shirts and started throwing them to the fans.\u00a0 While throwing the shirts Daniel Bryan attacked A.J.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight, Vince McMahon appears on Smackdown to moderate a face-to-face with both men.\u00a0 It wouldn\u2019t be the first time Vince has been involved with A.J. recently, as they had that segment a few weeks ago where he wanted A.J. to find the \u201canimal inside of him.\u201d<\/p><div id=\"pwtor-3091835351\" class=\"pwtor-content-1 pwtor-entity-placement\"><!-- Tag ID: pwtorchcom_test_300x600 -->\r\n<div align=\"center\" data-freestar-ad=\"__336x280 __300x600\" id=\"pwtorchcom_test_300x600\">\r\n  <script data-cfasync=\"false\" type=\"text\/javascript\">\r\n    freestar.config.enabled_slots.push({ placementName: \"pwtorchcom_test_300x600\", slotId: \"pwtorchcom_test_300x600\" });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Daniel Bryan had something to say about hot dogs on Twitter.\u00a0 Anybody else see a supermarket brawl like Stone Cold and Booker T from years ago?\u00a0 Anyway:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Shame on both <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AJStylesOrg?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@AJStylesOrg<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WWE?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Wwe<\/a> for encouraging people to eat hotdogs. Bryan Danielson (@bryandanielson) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bryandanielson\/status\/1085357042154520576?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 16, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><em>Frank\u2019s Analysis:\u00a0 Look at WWE giving us more of what we want, and that\u2019s Vince McMahon on TV again.\u00a0 Yeah, that\u2019s what makes programming better.\u00a0 It\u2019s uncomfortable watching Vince on TV and to be involved in this great feud between two top-end guys feels somewhat random.\u00a0 Vince had the segment with A.J. recently where he wanted him to \u201cfind the animal\u201d and perhaps that\u2019s why he\u2019s getting involved now, but that segment felt random and out of nowhere as well.\u00a0 Given how A.J. and Bryan are not \u201ctypical Vince\u201d guys, it\u2019ll be interesting to see the dialogue between all parties, especially now with Bryan settled into his new character.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Naomi vs. Mandy Rose<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This was a match that was supposed to happen a few times recently. \u00a0It has turned into a back-and-forth personal feud that lead to a brawl in a hotel room.<\/p>\n<p>For weeks, Mandy Rose has been coming on to Naomi\u2019s husband Jimmy Uso.\u00a0 Last week, Jimmy received a gift while he was doing a photo shoot with his brother.\u00a0 It turned out to be a hotel room key from Mandy Rose, and a seductive note.\u00a0 Later on, in a perfectly produced segment, Jimmy was seen heading towards Mandy\u2019s room.<\/p>\n<p>When Jimmy entered the room to talk to Mandy, she took her robe off to reveal her in black lingerie.\u00a0 Jimmy said they couldn\u2019t do this, but Mandy disagreed.\u00a0 A cameraman then showed up to take pictures of them, after which she revealed she wasn\u2019t interested in him.\u00a0 She just wanted to ruin Naomi\u2019s life, something she had told Sonya Deville earlier in the evening.\u00a0 As Jimmy left, it turns out Naomi was lurking and attacked Mandy.\u00a0 They brawled on the bed.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight, they go at it one-on-one.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a chat between Mandy and Sonya Deville on Twitter:<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/WWE\/status\/1087469975701413888<\/p>\n<p><em>Frank\u2019s Analysis:\u00a0 I can\u2019t spend too much on this, because it\u2019s just not worth the effort.\u00a0 Jimmy looked silly on a lot of levels, as did Mandy and Naomi as well.\u00a0 The segment has been well-picked apart here at PWTorch, and thus I won\u2019t pick it apart.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the ultimate question for me.\u00a0 What is the payoff to this?\u00a0 Other than this match, which doesn\u2019t excite a lot of people, what\u2019s the point?\u00a0 Is Naomi turning on Jimmy or vice versa?\u00a0 Is it just a way to keep the Usos occupied while they\u2019re out of tag team championship picture?\u00a0 It could lead to Naomi finding a partner to feud with Mandy and Sonya Deville, perhaps over the incoming women\u2019s tag team championship.\u00a0 Even that doesn\u2019t seem like something that would excite a lot of people.\u00a0 This falls under the \u201cfill TV time\u201d heading.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Miz (w\/Shane McMahon) vs. Cesaro (w\/Sheamus)<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Last week, the Miz threw his tag team partner, Shane McMahon, the \u201cbest birthday bash in the world.\u201d\u00a0 He did so by having cake, giving Shane new sneakers, and even had the crowd sing happy birthday.\u00a0 Shane expressed his discomfort with celebrating his birthday, but genuinely seemed to appreciate what the Miz had done for him.\u00a0 He also revealed that he had dreamed of being tag team champions with Andre the Giant and was proud to be Miz\u2019s partner.<\/p>\n<p>Smackdown Tag Team Champions the Bar (Sheamus &amp; Cesaro), interrupted the celebration.\u00a0 They said Vince was invited to the celebration but didn\u2019t want to come because he didn\u2019t care about Shane.\u00a0 Sheamus challenged Miz to a match which he initially resisted, but Shane pushed him into having it.\u00a0 Seeing as it was Shane\u2019s birthday, Miz was willing to accommodate.\u00a0 Miz went on to defeat Sheamus.\u00a0 Shane delivered a coast-to-coast to Sheamus.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, WWE tweeted this:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Just days before their <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SmackDown?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SmackDown<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TagTeamTitles?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#TagTeamTitles<\/a> clash at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/RoyalRumble?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#RoyalRumble<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mikethemiz?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@mikethemiz<\/a> (w\/ <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/shanemcmahon?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@shanemcmahon<\/a>) will battle <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WWECesaro?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@WWECesaro<\/a>  (w\/ <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WWESheamus?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@WWESheamus<\/a>) THIS TUESDAY on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SDLive?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SDLive<\/a>! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Ta6EdNlUVm\">https:\/\/t.co\/Ta6EdNlUVm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; WWE (@WWE) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WWE\/status\/1087080592091561984?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 20, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>At the Royal Rumble, the Bar defends their Smackdown Tag Team Championship against Miz and Shane.<\/p>\n<p><em>Frank\u2019s Analysis:\u00a0 People seem to be positive on Shane and Miz, but I\u2019m not in that camp.\u00a0 This is about Shane occupying a roster spot and fill TV time with entertainment.\u00a0 I don\u2019t need it in 2019.\u00a0 The roster is deep enough and you can build up tag teams to have a formidable division.\u00a0 Nonetheless I\u2019ll be fair and say that things have been fairly well done between these two.\u00a0 Ultimately, I wonder where this is headed.\u00a0 Logically, you would thing Miz turns on Shane.\u00a0 I lean more on the opposite happening or the partnership just fizzling out over time.<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Other Items from Last Week:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Carmella vs. Sonya Deville was announced for the show last week but did not take place, for those that care.\u00a0 We did see pictures of her and R-Truth\u2019s trip to WWE headquarters in Stamford, CT\u2026.also for those that care.<\/li>\n<li>In the opening segment, Becky Lynch and Smackdown Women\u2019s Champion Asuka discussed their match for the title at the Royal Rumble.\u00a0 The IIconics (Peyton Royce and Billy Kay) interrupted.\u00a0 Becky went on to defeat Peyton followed by Asuka defeating Billy.<\/li>\n<li>Lacey Evans appeared on TV watching the Becky-Peyton match.\u00a0 Last night on Raw, she announced participation in this year\u2019s Royal Rumble as did Alexa Bliss.\u00a0 EC3 was shown posing, as he was last night on Raw before Dana Brooke approached him to ask questions.\u00a0 Heavy Machinery made a smoothie with New Day.\u00a0 They included pancakes, protein powder, raw eggs, and tuna.\u00a0 Becky Lynch took a swig and said it was a little weak.\u00a0 Heavy Machinery made their in-ring debut last night on Raw defeating the Ascension.\u00a0 Nikki Cross did her \u201clet Nikki play\u201d bit while watching Rey Mysterio walk to the ring for his match.\u00a0 Evans, EC3, Nikki, and Heavy Machinery will appear on both shows until their permanent \u201cresidences\u201d are decided.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Start Time &amp; Matches Advertised by the Arena Website<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The arena website shows a start time of 6:45 p.m. with doors opening at 5:15 p.m.\u00a0 It announces the following matches:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship:\u00a0 Daniel Bryan (champ) vs. The Miz vs. A.J.
