Stephanie tried multiple times to convince Becky to go see the WWE doctors. Becky accused Stephanie of trying to steal her moment, but Stephanie responded by saying it’s for her own safety that she get cleared by doctors before WrestleMania. Stephanie then told Becky if she does not go see the doctors, she would be suspended until she did. Becky again refused and Stephanie announced that she is suspended from WWE. Becky then attacked Stephanie and went to put the Dis-Arm-Her on Stephanie, but couldn’t due to her knee injury.

Kurt Angle teased a retirement on Raw, but before he could make it official he was interrupted by Baron Corbin and Drew McIntyre. Baron Corbin came out first and after a few insults, Angle threatened to break Corbin’s ankle. McIntyre came out after this mocking Angle for his threat against Corbin. Both men came to ringside and surrounded Angle when Braun Strowman’s music played and he came down to support Angle. In the main event Angle and Strowman teamed against Corbin and McIntyre. The match would end when Braun Strowman was disqualified for hitting Corbin, even though Strowman wasn’t the legal man in the match. After the match they brawled and the brawl ended with Strowman choke slamming Corbin and McIntyre onto the steel steps in the ring and raising Angle’s hand.

Smackdown Live

Charlotte opened Smackdown by talking about Becky’s suspension. Charlotte emphasized that she’s perfectly healthy and ready to replace Becky at WrestleMania. As Charlotte pointed at the Wrestlemania sign, a spotlight shined on Becky Lynch who was walking through the crowd just below the sign. When Becky got to the ring, Triple H came down to the ring. Triple H told Charlotte that this situation didn’t concern her and told her to leave. Triple H then told Becky she could end her suspension easily, if she just went to see the doctors. Becky said no again and said she doesn’t trust them. As Triple H attempted to leave the ring, Becky sarcastically asked him how Stephanie was doing after Monday. Triple H reentered the ring and went on a quick rant about how Becky is actually scared of Ronda and she doesn’t want to see the doctors because she’s afraid of Ronda and her injury is a way out of the match. For his comments, Triple H was slapped by Becky. The two had a stare down nose to nose until Becky smirked and walked away.

Daniel Bryan cleverly plays to his home state crowd. Bryan came out with Rowan for a promo and complimented the Washington crowd because they understand what he’s trying to do, unlike everyone else in the country. Rowan compared himself and Bryan to Galileo because, like him, they are hated for their ideas. Bryan added that management in the back don’t like his ideas and that’s why he’s been put in the Elimination Chamber match. In the main event Bryan took on Jeff Hardy. The match ended after Rowan attacked Hardy. Samoa Joe would then attack Bryan and eventually all six members of the Elimination Chamber match ended up in the ring. As Smackdown ended, Bryan was yelling at Kayla Braxton saying that Rowan is not his bodyguard he is his intellectual peer and that he will be the champion forever because that’s what the planet needs.

•WWE in the Media

– Rusev and Lana were on Chasing Glory with Lilian Garcia this week in part one of a two part interview. They open the interview talking about Lana’s past, being born in America and moving to Russia at the age of five. She talked about the struggles of being the only American in her school in a country where there are many people who hate Americans. Lana says that while growing up in Russia she struggled with her self-image and had different eating disorders because she was shamed into believing she was fat, even though she says now she wasn’t overweight at all. She gets very emotional telling this story including how she used to write hate notes to herself because the culture created that sense of self hate.

They eventually transition to Rusev’s childhood growing up in Bulgaria. He talked about playing a variety of sports and talked about how coaches used to come into his classes in first and second grade to recruit kids to different magnet schools because in Bulgaria (and Russia) they focus heavily on training from an early age to mold kids into these elite professionals in their chosen. Rusev talks about how ultra-competitive he used to be and over time he’s learned to be more relaxed.

Rusev then talks about losing the United States Championship and he says it hurt to lose the title because it’s the first one he ever won in WWE and it also hurts that nobody seems to care about that championship. Rusev dismissively says that the United States Championship is probably going to get lost and quickly adds that he’s probably going to get lost again too. Lilian challenges Rusev when he says that anyone who sticks around on the roster long enough gets lost and Lilian retorts with names like John Cena, A.J. Styles, and Daniel Bryan who haven’t gotten lost. Lilian then asks him to explain why he feels that way and Rusev says that it just feels like no matter what he does it always ends up the same. Lana interjects saying that they refuse to be forgotten and they’ll continue to fight for their careers, saying that this is a very common conversation she and Rusev have. They explain that Rusev is extremely frustrated because he’s dropped over 50 pounds in an effort to get noticed and it hasn’t really worked, Lana notes that if she were Rusev she’d be “pissed” because he should be WWE Champion at some point.

Rusev clarifies saying he won’t stop fighting and isn’t complacent, but he admits he’s frustrated that he’s doing all the right things and still isn’t getting noticed. He said he thought that Rusev Day would’ve been the thing to get him a big push in WWE, but it’s amounted to very little and he doesn’t hide the fact he’s upset about this. He says the push for Rusev Day came a year too late and nobody cares about it anymore. Lana notes that now that Aiden English is no longer paired with them, the Rusev Day/Lana Day gimmick just isn’t the same. She credits English as being a big reason that Rusev Day caught fire as well. Lilian asks why they split English apart from them and Rusev sarcastically says “management had a different vision” in response and he also said they fought as hard as they could to keep the three together. Lilian then notes that this is the “new era” and management claims to be listening to the fans more and very quietly in the background you can hear Rusev dismiss that sentiment.

Lilian stops the interview here noting that they are going to be breaking some news on next week’s podcast and part two of the Lana & Rusev interview. For the first time in a long time (maybe in company history), a wrestler was disqualified in a tag team match because he hit the legal man from the other team, while he himself was not legal. More specifically, Braun Strowman was disqualified for hitting Baron Corbin on Monday while he wasn’t legal, and I had to restrain myself from screaming at my television. Okay, not really, but I was extremely annoyed. If this is a rule, the WWE hasn’t enforced it in forever and will probably never enforce it again. They didn’t even last 24 hours enforcing the rule because on Smackdown we had the tag team match between Gallows & Anderson and Rusev & Nakamura where both teams had the illegal man hitting the legal man for the other team. I understand they didn’t want anyone to lose in that match, but come on. Why even bother having a rule book if you’re constantly going to ignore it? I may be in the minority on this, but I feel like the rules matter, and if you pick and choose when to enforce them, you’re just making it all up as you go. At times, this definitely feels like the case, but your audience shouldn’t think that’s the case, and the more you do things like change rules on the fly to match what you want to book, the more amateur you look.

– I found it interesting that the Raw women’s tag teams had to qualify for their matches, but the Smackdown teams didn’t. The reason for this is that there aren’t really enough women on Smackdown to be able to have qualifying matches. In my opinion, this should be a bit of a warning sign when it comes to the new women’s tag team championships. There are currently 27 full-time women on the roster. Here is a breakdown of the women’s rosters on each show:

Raw (14)

Alexa Bliss, Alicia Fox, Bayley, Dana Brooke, Ember Moon, Liv Morgan, Mickie James, Natalya, Nia Jax, Ronda Rousey, Ruby Riott, Sarah Logan, Sasha Banks, & Tamina

Smackdown (11)

Asuka, Becky Lynch, Billie Kay, Carmella, Charlotte, Lana, Mandy Rose, Naomi, Peyton Royce, Sonya Deville, & Zelina Vega

** Lacey Evans & Nikki Cross are not designated to a show yet.

If the injury bug hits the women’s locker room, there’s not much depth to sustain a women’s tag team division. With two singles titles and the tag team championships, eight people will either be defending the championships or challenging for them at all times. That’s 30% of your roster that’s going to be in the title scene at all times. Let’s say the championships are successfully defended. Those challengers won’t be challenging again typically, and since the automatic rematch is “antiquated,” we can assume that the four that didn’t win the title/successfully defend it will be sent to the “back of the line,” which means four more will need to replace them. So that means that 12 of your 27 women wrestlers will either be involved in a title feud or have just finished up the feud and not in line for it again, which means that 44% of your roster is going to be in the title scene. This doesn’t even take into consideration WWE’s infatuation with multi-person matches!

My fear becomes that the titles are the only stories being told in the women’s division. It already feels that way most of the time, which is disappointing, but by adding more championships, it takes away the ability to tell other stories that don’t revolve around the titles. In an ideal world, adding extra championships will actually get the women on television more because surely they plan on building up the next contenders while the champions are currently in a feud, right? Probably not… Hopefully they have a good plan in place for the women on the main roster, or they have a plan to call up some NXT women after WrestleMania because the lack of depth just really stood out to me when creating the Elimination Chamber match.

NOW CHECK OUT OTHER WEEKLY OVERVIEWS HERE.

OR JUMP TO LAST WEEK’S WWE OVERVIEW: WEEKLY OVERVIEW – WWE (thru 1/30): Top stories of week, major show lineups, live event results, schedule of live events, noteworthy social media posts, more

THANK YOU FOR VISITING

The following is the latest in a new series of weekly in-depth articles exclusive to PWTorch which will help put in perspective major wrestling promotions with a weekly overview, looking at news and roster developments, results, future line-ups, […]

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

2,6075,3

post-74772","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-prowrestlingnews","category-weekly-overviews","category-news_wwe
["GET
