It was filmed over a period of two days and presented in full for the first time since its inception.

Competitors were divided in to three groups of women, men, and “rookie” men. D.A. Brewer, Jessika Carr, Stokely Hathaway, Robert Strauss, and Drake Wuertz were not asked to participate as they are signed as managers and referees, respectively, but volunteered their participation anyway.

Prior Combine champions Bianca Belair and Riddick Moss, as well as Wesley Blake, were also noted as competitors whose participation was optional, so one can infer that other longer-tenured wrestlers were also participating of their own volition. Wrestlers such as Fabian Aichner, Marcel Barthel, Angelo Dawkins, Velveteen Dream, Keith Lee, Kassius Ohno, Rhea Ripley, and Jaxson Ryker, as well as recruiter Canyon Ceman and other staffers, could be seen looking on during certain groups.

If any of these wrestlers competed, it was not shown, though Velveteen Dream is depicted doing a trap deadlift in the Network thumbnail. Xia Li notably remained on site for all events in all groups, enthusiastically cheering on her fellow competitors the whole way on top of competing in her own right. Competitors elected in what order they would attempt the given events, in some cases such as Bianca Belair waiting until last so to know the numbers to beat. The vertical and broad jumps were run simultaneously, as were the med ball tosses and ring agility drills.

Head Coach Matt Bloom, Tegan Nox, and 2018 Combine champion Tino Sabbatelli handled commentary with guests such as Bianca Belair, Jessie Elaban, and several coaches including new coach Road Dogg popping in and out. Coaches including Sara Amato, Robbie Brookside, Serena Deeb, Scotty 2 Hotty, Sean Hayes, Shawn Michaels, Norman Smiley, and Terry Taylor delivered pep talks and oversaw the events. Hayes pointed out that the competitors do not train specifically for these events on a daily basis.

Note: Most competitors were shown competing in all events, though many results were either unannounced, inaudible, or cut. What follows is a fully comprehensive look at all discernible results as well as official winners.

Women, Day 1

Women’s Vertical Jump (3 attempts)

No results announced

Women’s Broad Jump (3 attempts)

Official Top 5
1. Brewer, Stokely Hathaway

Stoup’s Analysis

Regardless of the impressive speed and strength scores, which as Road Dogg pointed out are not the be-all nor end-all in professional wrestling, this Network special is a fascinating glimpse inside WWE’s state-of-the-art Performance Center. As one may imagine, it is a very different presentation and characterization of the facility and its athletes from what we see on NXT TV, as well as a look at several newcomers who had yet been seen on a significant level. Though unwieldy at 5 hours and 46 minutes, it is fast-paced and well worth the watch to see the endearing camaraderie and competitive rivalries that develop among WWE’s developmental talents, and to hear perspectives on those talents from the coaches and colleagues who work with them daily. I watched the whole special twice in two days and enjoyed every minute. It feels like NXT’s own version of the Olympics. If WWE sees value in continuing with this special moving forward, I would only hope for improved organization so more – if not all – scores can be known and understood by the viewer rather than talked over, inaudibly muddled, or lost completely.

Highlights

Xia Li’s enthusiasm throughout the entire program, for her own performances and those of others even outside her own group

Stokely Hathaway voluntarily working himself to the bone despite being in NXT as a non-wrestler

Reina Gonzalez proving herself as one of the athletic elite in NXT’s women’s division

Shayna Baszler’s worked kick to Bianca Belair after Belair’s relay run

The running personal competition between Babatunde and Dan Matha

Adam Cole laughing in knowing disbelief at Montez Ford’s superhuman ability

Omari Palmer crushing Otis Dozovic’s 775lb trap deadlift record and making it look like nothing

Commentary’s analysis, including Coach Bloom’s suggestion of a Disney songs event for next year

Road Dogg saying, “If we just cleared the place and had a shoot fight, [Adrian Jaoude] would definitely win that one.”

THANK YOU FOR VISITING

The third annual WWE Performance Center Combine aired on the WWE Network at 2 p.m. EST, Sunday May 26.
