PAGEOT, PWTORCH CONTRIBUTOR<\/h3>\n<p><em>Commentary: Ian Riccaboni, Colt Cabana, Caprice Coleman<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We opened in the arena with the commentary trio running down the card.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Pageot\u2019s Perspective:\u00a0 For the first time ever ROH is streaming their TV tapings live on Honor Club.\u00a0 Six matches are on the docket tonight, being recorded for future episodes of television, but these do not technically constitute as spoilers.\u00a0 From what I&#8217;ve been told ROH Television will be undergoing a complete overhaul in the months to come with the end result likely being closer to the U.S. NJPW television show in terms of being a compilation of best matches and greatest hits from recent live events.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>(1) \u201cTHE OCTOPUS\u201d JONATHAN GRESHAM vs. DRAGON LEE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Riccaboni pitched this as a rematch from NJPW&#8217;s recent <em>Best Of Super Juniors <\/em>tournament.\u00a0 (Lee won that one in 9:42.)\u00a0 Very fast paced action right out of the gate.\u00a0 Lee channeled his brother Rush early, calling Gresham a dog.\u00a0 They allowed one another to chop them and it quickly turned into a slugfest.\u00a0 Gresham kicked Lee low to boos from the crowd (shades of his victory over Silas Young at <em>Best In The World<\/em>) as the commentators questioned how low he hit and whether or not it should constitute a DQ.\u00a0 Gresham took Lee to the mat and aggressively worked him over as the crowd began to turn on him.\u00a0 Gresham got in the ref&#8217;s face.\u00a0 Hammerlock bodyslam for a two-count on Lee.\u00a0 Gresham worked over Lee&#8217;s arm but Lee fired up and connected with his brother&#8217;s finishing move, The Bull&#8217;s Horns.\u00a0 Another series of slap attacks.\u00a0 Lee seemed to come up on top but Gresham kipped up into an enziguiri.\u00a0 Tilt-a-whirl DDT from Gresham.\u00a0 Rolling German suplex from Lee.\u00a0 Inside-out lariat from Gresham.\u00a0 Bridging German for two!\u00a0 Whew.\u00a0 Gresham wound up hung up in the corner and took a double-stomp.\u00a0 Running knee from Lee for a near-fall.\u00a0 Lee pulled his knee pad down and nailed a second.\u00a0 Gresham was out.<\/p>\n<p>WINNER: Dragon Lee in 10:07.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Pageot\u2019s Perspective:\u00a0 That was Ring Of Honor.\u00a0 That is the kind of wrestling that put ROH on the map and led to WWE coming calling every time they were looking to find their next top star of the future.\u00a0 Gresham&#8217;s more aggressive side shows itself again.\u00a0 Is it the first start of a heel turn?\u00a0 Is it a red herring?\u00a0 Is it just a new rougher babyface attitude to cope with his frequent losses?\u00a0 Does it have any correlation to what his best friend Jay Lethal&#8217;s been going through?\u00a0 Nothing is obvious yet and that&#8217;s always nice.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>-ROH World Champion Matt Taven made his entrance wearing a Boston Red Sox jersey to loud boos.\u00a0 Taven said the last time he was in New York City was the greatest time of his life because all the melvins got to see him to take home the world title.\u00a0 He bragged about throwing out the first pitch at Fenway Park earlier this week.\u00a0 Taven said his long feud with Lethal comes to an end tonight.\u00a0 Tonight he&#8217;ll prove to all the haters that he&#8217;s the ROH world champion and he&#8217;s better than Lethal.<\/p><div id=\"pwtor-2026732946\" class=\"pwtor-content pwtor-entity-placement\"><div align=\"center\" data-freestar-ad=\"__336x280 __336x280\" id=\"pwtorchcom_test_300x250\">\r\n  <script data-cfasync=\"false\" type=\"text\/javascript\">\r\n    freestar.config.enabled_slots.push({ placementName: \"pwtorchcom_test_300x250\", slotId: \"pwtorchcom_test_300x250\" });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Kenny King interrupted.\u00a0 He said he wanted to say what everybody was thinking.\u00a0 &#8220;That&#8217;s a lame ass jersey on a lame ass person.&#8221;\u00a0 He told the fans to shut up because the Yankees suck too.\u00a0 King didn&#8217;t care that Taven beat Lethal and Scurll because last time they were in NYC he beat Jushin Thunder Liger and The Great Muta (in a battle royal).\u00a0 He said this is the new ROH and they want to do some live and unpredictable shit.\u00a0 He told Taven to add him to tonight&#8217;s title match.\u00a0 (King is owed a world title match due to winning the Honor Rumble at\u00a0<em>G1 Supercard<\/em>.)\u00a0 He threatened to send Taven to a hospital bed next to David Ortiz.\u00a0 Taven ran down the list of challengers he&#8217;s already beaten and said he&#8217;d be happy to add King to the match.\u00a0 King was pleased and peaced out.<\/p>\n<p>Lethal stormed the ring.\u00a0 He got in Taven&#8217;s face about accepting the stipulation without conferring with him first.\u00a0 They came to blows until security and referees separated them.\u00a0 Taven left and Lethal paced around, frustrated at losing his singles match and being thrown into a new situation that he didn&#8217;t have time to plan for.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Pageot\u2019s Perspective:\u00a0 Kenny King is going to win the world title tonight.\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 That&#8217;s one way to kick off this &#8220;new era&#8221; of Ring Of Honor.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a culmination of King&#8217;s stories from the past year and Taven is a big enough star now that he can stay over as a main event heel without the belt.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t be surprised if Rhett Titus gets involved to reunite The All-Night Express as the world title express.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>(2) THE BOUNCERS (Beer City Bruiser &amp; Brawler Milonas) vs. SOLDIERS OF SAVAGERY (Moses &amp; Kaun) vs. COAST 2 COAST (LSG &amp; Shaheem Ali)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This was the debut match for Soldiers Of Savagery.\u00a0 They only appeared three times in ROH prior to this, attacking Lifeblood and possibly working in cahoots with Shane Taylor.\u00a0 Bruiser and LSG started.\u00a0 After a couple seconds Ali and Kaun tagged themselves in.\u00a0 Kaun with a side suplex.\u00a0 Milonas and Moses tagged in.\u00a0 The big men faced off.\u00a0 Milonas humorously called him &#8220;fat boy.&#8221;\u00a0 They ran into each other and bounced back and forth.\u00a0 S.O.S. worked over LSG.\u00a0 Tag to Ali but S.O.S. took over on him too.\u00a0 Things broke down.\u00a0 Milonas into a ring post by Moses.\u00a0 Bruiser whipped into a clothesline from S.O.S.\u00a0 Double powerbomb to Bruiser through the timekeeper&#8217;s table.\u00a0 The referee threw them out of the match.\u00a0 S.O.S. were officially disqualified but the match continued (which hardly seemed fair to Bruiser).<\/p>\n<p>C2C went to work on Milonas.\u00a0 LSG was thrown over the ring post to the floor.\u00a0 Closing Time to Ali.<\/p>\n<p>WINNERS: The Bouncers in 7:42.<\/p>\n<p>-The red balloons appeared and TK O&#8217;Ryan and Vinny Marseglia hit the ring, wailing away on The Bouncers with steel chairs. Marseglia sat down and lit a cigar.\u00a0 He smoked a few puffs.\u00a0 Marseglia reminded us that The Bouncers have a tag title match tomorrow night (due to winning a gauntlet match at <em>State Of The Art\u00a0<\/em>on June 2).\u00a0 He said The Kingdom should have been given a tag title match a long time ago.\u00a0 He put out the cigar on Bruiser&#8217;s chest while Bruiser screamed.\u00a0 The Kingdom sipped some whisky.\u00a0 Marseglia left and O&#8217;Ryan called out Rush for their scheduled match.<\/p><div id=\"pwtor-2639327023\" class=\"pwtor-content-1 pwtor-entity-placement\"><!-- Tag ID: pwtorchcom_test_300x600 -->\r\n<div align=\"center\" data-freestar-ad=\"__336x280 __300x600\" id=\"pwtorchcom_test_300x600\">\r\n  <script data-cfasync=\"false\" type=\"text\/javascript\">\r\n    freestar.config.enabled_slots.push({ placementName: \"pwtorchcom_test_300x600\", slotId: \"pwtorchcom_test_300x600\" });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p><em>(Pageot\u2019s Perspective:\u00a0 That was a very busy segment.\u00a0 S.O.S. looked fine in their debut.\u00a0 Moses&#8217; gear gave me Shield vibes on their initial debut and hitting a team-up powerbomb through a table certainly doesn&#8217;t shake those associations.\u00a0 I like the call of having them DQ&#8217;ed and tossed from the match rather than shrugging it off as &#8220;anything goes in a triple threat&#8221; like WWE would.\u00a0 The Bouncers pick up a win ahead of their title match tomorrow but the Kingdom involvement would seem to foreshadow they&#8217;re not getting the belts.\u00a0 Stabbing the cigar out on Bruiser was something more aggressive than we&#8217;re used to seeing in ROH.\u00a0 Is a bit of an AEW influence beginning to creep in?)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>(3) RUSH vs. TK O\u2019RYAN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;Ryan requested this one, a rematch from Rush&#8217;s ROH debut back on January 20 TV.\u00a0 Rush dominated until O&#8217;Ryan managed to land a lucky punch at ringside.\u00a0 He took over and hit a Three Amigos trio of suplexes on the luchador before emulating Eddie Guerrero&#8217;s shimmy dance to boos.\u00a0 Rush went nuts at 6:00 and ran O&#8217;Ryan around the ringside area, hurling him into the guardrails and security guards.\u00a0 The commentators sold the energy and Coleman predicted this match would be over in the next two minutes.\u00a0 The Bull&#8217;s Horns came 90 seconds later.<\/p>\n<p>WINNER: Rush in 7:45.<\/p>\n<p>-Rush fist-bumped fans in the front row, including one in a Rush mask.\u00a0 The &#8220;fan&#8221; jumped the guardrail and pummeled away at him, throwing him into the guardrail and ring post before hitting The Bull&#8217;s Horns on Rush in the ring.\u00a0 Dalton Castle unmasked.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Pageot\u2019s Perspective:\u00a0 I was conditioned to tune out when O&#8217;Ryan was introduced for a singles match but Rush&#8217;s star power ensured all eyes were on the ring.\u00a0 I guess he&#8217;s a babyface again?\u00a0 He was positioned that way upon his debut by feuding with The Kingdom.\u00a0 Then he started feuding with Lifeblood and Dalton Castle and acting like an asshole.\u00a0 But now he&#8217;s back to wrestling heels and fist-bumping fans.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>-A Jay Lethal vignette aired on his experience wrestling in Madison Square Garden at <em>G1 Supercard<\/em>.\u00a0 He spoke like his usual self but said heelish things like that he doesn&#8217;t care what the ROH title means to other people, he knows what it means to him, and that he cannot leave NYC without the world title.<\/p>\n<p>-Alex Shelley joined commentary for the next match, which is the world title.\u00a0 Cabana complimented him on his new look.\u00a0 Shelley looked and talked with a shade of Keanu Reeves to him.\u00a0 He will challenge the winner for the world title at\u00a0<em>Summer Supercard\u00a0<\/em>on August 9 in Toronto.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(4) MATT TAVEN vs. JAY LETHAL vs. KENNY KING \u2013 ROH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Taven powdered to ringside to let Lethal and King go at it.\u00a0 Taven pulled Lethal out and they went at each other until a corkscrew tornado from King took out both of them.\u00a0 King went to work on Lethal in the ring.\u00a0 Taven returned and took over control on Lethal.\u00a0 Taven and King wrestled for a bit while Lethal sold at ringside.\u00a0 Lethal Combination to King.\u00a0 Enziguiri to Taven.\u00a0 Lethal tossed King to the floor and set Taven up for a Lethal Injection.\u00a0 King returned to thwart things, though.\u00a0 All three men threw hands.\u00a0 All three were down on the mat at 10:00.<\/p>\n<p>Taven with a suicide dive to both men at once.\u00a0 He jumped and dove over the ropes onto King but turned around into a suicide dive from Lethal.\u00a0 A second to King.\u00a0 A third to King.\u00a0 Hail To The King elbow drop blocked by King&#8217;s boot.\u00a0 Lethal with the figure four instead.\u00a0 Taven with a frog-splash to break it up.\u00a0 Taven with the figure four to King.\u00a0 Lethal with the elbow drop.\u00a0 Taven rolled over to avoid it but reversed the pressure, putting himself in figure four peril instead.\u00a0 Lethal locked on a crossface.\u00a0 King broke it up.\u00a0 Chinchecker from King to Lethal and a springboard kick from Taven.\u00a0 Springboard double blockbuster from King to both men.\u00a0 Taven countered the Royal Flush into a small package.\u00a0 Just The Tip (of the knee) to King.\u00a0 Lethal Injection to Taven at 15:00!\u00a0 The fans came to their feet but Taven kicked out.<\/p>\n<p>Dueling &#8220;Let&#8217;s go Lethal! \/ Let&#8217;s go Taven!&#8221; chants.\u00a0 Lethal Injection from King to Lethal!\u00a0 Royal Flush!\u00a0 Climax from Taven to King.\u00a0 Taven steals the pin on Lethal.<\/p>\n<p>WINNER: Matt Taven in 16:04 to retain the world title.<\/p>\n<p>-Time keeper Amy Rose checked on King, who was incensed.\u00a0 Taven bragged to Lethal&#8217;s face about winning.\u00a0 Lethal begrudgingly shook Taven&#8217;s hand.\u00a0 Taven smiled, then kicked him between the legs.\u00a0 He&#8217;s still our top heel, folks.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Pageot\u2019s Perspective:\u00a0 I was wrong and I&#8217;m perfectly okay with that.\u00a0 Taven&#8217;s title reign is starting to gain some real steam, especially with the shenanigan-free victories.\u00a0 Taven-Shelley main eventing in Toronto might seem a bit weak on paper but maybe they&#8217;ll surprise us.\u00a0 This match was a blast from the ten-minute mark on.\u00a0 Lethal is officially out of the title picture now.\u00a0 Time for him and Gresham to make a serious foray toward the tag belts?\u00a0 I suspect King&#8217;s not far from the title picture, though.\u00a0 He can once again argue about having the match won before Taven stole the pin and you know he won&#8217;t rest until he gets another shot at the belt.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>(5) VILLAIN ENTERPRISES (Flip Gordon &amp; ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Champions Marty Scurll, PCO, &amp; Brody King) vs. PJ BLACK &amp; LIFEBLOOD (PJ Black, Mark Haskins, Tracy Williams, &amp; Bandido)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Scurll and Williams started.\u00a0 A shoving match broke out and both teams jumped in and went nose to nose.\u00a0 Bandido tagged in and ran circles around Scurll.\u00a0 Tag to Gordon.\u00a0 Gordon turned down the test of strength and gave Bandido the middle finger instead.\u00a0 (What a jerk.)\u00a0 Tag out to King.\u00a0 Springboard armdrag from the big man to the luchador.\u00a0 The Brits, Scurll and Haskins, in.\u00a0 Black in as Lifeblood isolated Scurll.\u00a0 Frequent tags from the faces.\u00a0 Time for the formula ROH multi-man segment with everybody jumping in and out and people flipping over the ropes onto groups of opponents at ringside.\u00a0 When the dust settled Williams was being isolated by Villain Enterprises.\u00a0 PCO with a cannonball off the top rope.\u00a0 Gordon tagged back in at 10:00.<\/p>\n<p>Gordon got physical for the first time with some chops to Williams.\u00a0 He stalked him slowly and looked like a big ol&#8217; meanie before tagging out again.\u00a0 Hot tag to Bandido.\u00a0 He cleared Scurll and King and caught a crossbody from PCO.\u00a0 Bandido walked with him before hitting a powerslam.\u00a0 Corkscrew plancha onto the three men on the floor.\u00a0 Gordon slid a steel chair into the ring.\u00a0 Williams grabbed it and chased Gordon away and up the aisle.\u00a0 Williams returned alone.\u00a0 Haskins tagged in against the NWA tag champions.\u00a0 Suicide dives to PCO, then King.\u00a0 Everything broke down again.<\/p>\n<p>Williams and King battled at 15:00.\u00a0 Six men brawled at ringside until PCO moonsaulted off the top rope onto the pile.\u00a0 King with a sit-out powerbomb to Haskins for a near-fall.\u00a0 Haskins avoided a Gonzo Bomb and tagged Black.\u00a0 21plex from Bandido to King.\u00a0 Springboard 450 from Black to King for the pin!<\/p>\n<p>WINNERS: Black &amp; Lifeblood in 17:39.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Pageot\u2019s Perspective: A classic 2018 ROH Bullet Club match.\u00a0 The faces picking up the win ahead of their title shot tomorrow is booking 101.\u00a0 If Lifeblood doesn&#8217;t let Black into their club now they&#8217;re just being unreasonable.\u00a0 <\/em><em>Gordon being a mean-mugging cowardly heel while the rest of Villain Enterprises are lovable scamps is a weird fit right now, perhaps on purpose.\u00a0 This could definitely lead to Gordon usurping leadership from Scurll and driving him out of ROH later this year before turning VE full heel.\u00a0 I still have my doubts PCO would ever be booed but 2019 appears to be the year of turning babyfaces heel.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>(6) GUERRILLAS OF DESTINY (Tama Tonga &amp; Tanga Loa) vs. THE BRISCOES (Jay Briscoe &amp; Mark Briscoe) \u2013 STREET FIGHT FOR THE ROH WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This marked the first appearance of the ROH tag champions in an ROH ring in over two months and only their fourth match since winning the titles on April 6.<\/p>\n<p>The Briscoes attacked with kendo sticks.\u00a0 G.O.D. quickly took over thanks to the guardrails and kendo sticks.\u00a0 Loa cracked a steel chair over Mark&#8217;s back.\u00a0 Mark with a step-up cannonball over the ropes through Loa through a table.\u00a0 Jay with a chair to Tonga.\u00a0 Loa bodyslammed Mark through a table.\u00a0 Jay hurled some chairs into the ring.\u00a0 Loa with a death valley driver to Mark from off the apron onto a pile of chairs.\u00a0 Tonga with a kendo stick shot flush to the center of Jay&#8217;s head.\u00a0 Loa with a suplex to Mark on the mats at ringside.\u00a0 Jay saved Mark from a Magic Killer with a chair.\u00a0 Redneck Boogie to Tonga onto a chair.\u00a0 Another kendo stick shot to Mark, then some to Tonga.\u00a0 Mark powerbombed off the apron through Jay laying on a table.\u00a0 Magic Killer to Mark on a pile of chairs.\u00a0 He kicked out.\u00a0 Gun Stun to Jay from Tonga.<\/p>\n<p>Mark introduced a ladder at 14:40.\u00a0 More chair shots.\u00a0 Another table into the ring.\u00a0 Jay was bleeding as he and Loa threw hands at ringside.\u00a0 Tonga onto the table in the ring.\u00a0 Mark to the top of the ladder.\u00a0 Loa cut him off and&#8230; the Honor Club feed went down.\u00a0 It came back\u00a0 to Mark and Tonga jockeying at the top of the ladder.\u00a0 Tonga onto Jay&#8217;s shoulders.\u00a0 Mark with a froggy-bow elbow off the very top of the ladder to Tonga, on Jay&#8217;s shoulders, and through the table.\u00a0 That was finally enough.<\/p>\n<p>WINNERS: The Briscoes in 17:53 to become 11-time ROH tag team champions.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Pageot\u2019s Perspective:\u00a0 If you wanted a story, good luck.\u00a0 If you wanted people getting hit with weapons, enjoy!\u00a0 As street fights go, yes, undoubtedly, one of the best I&#8217;ve seen in wrestling in a long time.\u00a0 They went above and beyond any no DQ, no holds barred match that ROH, NXT, NJPW, or WWE has done in recent memory.\u00a0 Both teams busted their asses in that regard.\u00a0 But it&#8217;s also riddled with long-term issues.\u00a0 <\/em><em>One month from now somebody will get put through a table and be treated as if they&#8217;re dead to the world.\u00a0 Here these guys got put through multiple tables and took kendo sticks to the head and chairs to the back and were back on their feet twenty seconds later.\u00a0 I&#8217;m supposed to buy the Bouncers, the Kingdom, and Shinobi Shadow Squad as threats to these guys?\u00a0 They&#8217;ve been built up to god level (no pun intended).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Also how exciting, really, is the Briscoes as tag champions for the eleventh time?\u00a0 What more can we do or say?\u00a0 They&#8217;ve beaten everybody.\u00a0 They&#8217;ve done everything.\u00a0 Are they faces again?\u00a0 They were certainly treated that way here, fighting champions of ROH, day-one veterans defending the company&#8217;s honor against lazy part-timers who took off for two months without defending the belts.\u00a0 But they&#8217;re heels in their war with the NWA, right?\u00a0 And as excited as I was when G.O.D. first won the titles, that all amounted to nothing.\u00a0 This two match series with the Briscoes was it.\u00a0 Nobody else in the division was elevated or got any rub from working with them (even in defeat).\u00a0 They never appeared on a single episode of ROH television.\u00a0 And no interesting stories were truly told with non-contracted wrestlers holding the titles.\u00a0 They never even defended them once in Japan.\u00a0 Mayu Iwatani did more to elevate the Women Of Honor title and she held it for a much shorter period.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Yes, this match was a fun 18 minutes.\u00a0 This whole show was, overall, more entertaining than most Honor Club events and some pay-per-views due to the mix of storytelling and quality wrestling.\u00a0 But I just don&#8217;t know if any of the results from tonight truly create excitement or buzz about where we go from here or what comes next.\u00a0 That&#8217;s been a big problem this year and it needs to be addressed quickly.)<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>Find Harley on Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/yrechoheart\">@yrechoheart<\/a> and listen to he and Emily Fear talk all things ROH every Wednesday on the PWTorch Dailycast \u201cTalking Honor.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"pwtor-end-article-groups pwtor-entity-placement\" id=\"pwtor-1143918988\"><div id=\"pwtor-836795526\"><div align=\"center\" data-freestar-ad=\"__336x280\" id=\"pwtorchcom_medrec_3\">\r\n  <script data-cfasync=\"false\" type=\"text\/javascript\">\r\n    freestar.config.enabled_slots.push({ placementName: \"pwtorchcom_medrec_3\", slotId: \"pwtorchcom_medrec_3\" });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\nTHANK YOU FOR VISITING<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>ROH MANHATTAN MAYHEM JULY 20, 2019 NEW YORK, NY AT HAMMERSTEIN BALLROOM AIRED ON ROH HONOR CLUB REPORT BY HARLEY R.
