PAGEOT, PWTORCH CONTRIBUTOR

It was SummerSlam week in Toronto and local promotion Smash Wrestling had the vision to invite all their friends to town for a week of shows joining forces with promotions like Progress, WXW, OWE, and more. On an early Saturday morning at 11 a.m. the bell rang in the Midtown Event Theatre for an all-women’s show featuring the stars of Smash, Shimmer, Rise, and Femmes Fatales. 300 seats were sold in advance and more standing room tickets were issued at the door for a packed house.

Nearly all the talent on the card were available for pre-show meet and greets as well as Vanessa Kraven, Alicia Atout, and others. In two dark matches Max The Impaler defeated Leah Vaughan and Alexia Nicole & Meave O’Ferrell defeated Jody Threat & Mary Lee Rose.

-The opening contest was to determine the first ever Smash women’s champion. (The men’s title is currently held by Tarik with the tag titles held by Halal Beefcake.)

(1) “THE DEMON ASSASSIN” ROSEMARY vs. “TWO SCOOPS” KC SPINELLI – SMASH WRESTLING WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP

Xandra Bale was the special guest referee. Spinelli attempted to befriend Rosemary before the bell and unzipped to reveal a shirt from the cartoon Archer. Rosemary unzipped her jacket to reveal she was also wearing an Archer shirt. Unfortunately she quickly turned on Spinelli after that. At one point it looked like Spinelli could have had the match won but she chose to go up top for an additional moonsault rather than make the pin. Rosemary moved, Spinelli crashed and burned, and Rosemary would pick up the win minutes later with a double underhook DDT.

WINNER: Rosemary in 9:30 to capture the Smash women’s title.

(Pageot’s Perspective: A bit of a surprising outcome to me. With Rosemary so heavily involved in Impact I thought they’d give the title to Spinelli and kick the show off with a feel-good victory for the hometown babyface. Rosemary has lots of name cachet, though, and she’ll be a great first champion.)

-Our second match was scheduled to be a singles contest between Rosemary’s stable mate Dust and Delmi Exo. Dust attacked Exo during her entrance and locked in a rear naked choke. The referee tried to talk her off to no avail, which prompted Exo’s sister and tag partner Ashley Vox to make the save. As Vox fought with Dust Vox’s scheduled opponent for the night, Veda Scott, ran in and we had ourselves a brawl. So naturally…

(2) SEA STARS (Delmi Exo & Ashley Vox) vs. DUST & VEDA SCOTT

A nicely-paced tag match that stood out from all the other singles matches on the card. In the end Sea Stars hit their signature assisted senton to Scott while Dust was out of action on the floor.

WINNERS: Sea Stars in 9:37.

(3) SHOTZI BLACKHEART vs. DELILAH DOOM

This has been a long ongoing rivalry ever since Rosemary brainwashed ‘80s aerobics instructor Delilah Doom and turned her into the tormented “Doomies say die!” version of Doom that we got here. Blackheart was over huge and I’m sure her appearance on the recent Evolve show on WWE Network didn’t hurt. Doom spat into her hand a few times and chopped Blackheart before picking up the surprise submission victory.

WINNER: Delilah Doom in 8:51.

-Blackheart offered a conciliatory handshake after the match, hoping to find some shred of the old Delilah in her opponent, but Doom just slapped her and walked away.

(4) ZOE LUCAS vs. “BIG SWOLE” AERIAL MONROE – PHOENIX OF RISE CHAMPIONSHIP

Lucas’ bae, the Phoenix Of Rise title, was on the line. After a month in Japan for Stardom, where she was inducted into Tokyo Cyber Squad, Lucas returned home to England for two days before flying off here to Canada. Things were competitive throughout. Lucas hit her Lucas Landslide at 10:30 but Monroe kicked out to our shock. A second Landslide was delivered off the middle rope but the proximity allowed Monroe to break the referee’s count. A frustrated Lucas charged but Monroe hit a sunset flip for the pin.

WINNER: Aerial Monroe in 11:23 to capture the Rise title.

-Lucas lost it. She grabbed her bae and a microphone and threw a hissy fit at ringside. She yelled that nobody could take the title away from her. Enter: the legend Bull Nakano. Nakano strolled down to the ring with a whip in hand and unloaded on Lucas until she dropped the belt and scampered off. Nakano presented the title to Monroe, who becomes the eighth Phoenix Of Rise champion.

(Pageot’s Perspective: A big win for Monroe, whose husband may be wrestling at SummerSlam tomorrow night against Drew McIntyre. Lucas’ loss of her bae may crumble her but she’s due to head back to Stardom in October for the Goddesses Of Stardom tag tournament so I suspect things will work out for her.)

(5) NWA WOMEN’S CHAMPION “AK-47” ALLYSIN KAY vs. SHIMMER TAG TEAM CHAMPION “THE FUTURE LEGEND” CHEERLEADER MELISSA vs. “THE WOUNDED OWL” LUFISTO vs. “HELL’S FAVORITE HARLOT” PRISCILLA KELLY – NON-TITLE MATCH

All four women were over big with Melissa playing the big heel and Kay siding with her at times. They fought to ringside quickly with Melissa scooping up the diminutive Kelly and dumping her into the laps of multiple fans. She then unloaded on LuFisto with chair shots. A four-way submission chain broke out in the ring before Kay and Melissa teamed up to work together against the babyfaces. In the end Kelly pinned LuFisto following Osteoporosis.

WINNER: Priscilla Kelly in 9:12.

(Pageot’s Perspective: A real blast. Everyone was over with the live crowd and everyone looked great.)

(6) SHIMMER TAG TEAM CHAMPION “THE LATINA SENSATION” MERCEDES MARTINEZ vs. “THICK MAMA PUMP” JORDYNNE GRACE – NCW FEMMES FATALES INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

These women had faced each other twice before with the veteran Martinez coming out on top both times. Martinez used her experience while Grace relied on her power as you would expect. At 14:30 the ref was bumped and Martinez elected to bring her title belt into the ring to use as a weapon. She swung, Grace ducked, and connected with the Grace Driver. The fans counted three but the referee was still down. Grace teased using the title belt as a weapon herself but the fans implored her not to. Martinez used the hesitation to hit a big boot and followed with a Bull Run onto the belt. The referee came to right on time and counted the pin.

WINNER: Mercedes Martinez in 16:06 to retain the Femmes Fatales title.

-Martinez boasted about make it a threepeat. She said that she’s no rookie or five year-old girl and told Grace to “remember who the fuck I am!” She told Grace to go back to TV with her little girls and come back to her when she was ready. Grace shut her up with a forearm and stood tall in defeat.

(7) NICOLE SAVOY vs. NICOLE MATTHEWS – SHIMMER CHAMPIONSHIP

Savoy won the title from Martinez in November 2017 and is coming up on nearly two years as champion. This was a terrific main event with tons of near-falls and hurling of themselves into the fan seating. (Notably not folding chairs but rather hard metal chairs like you’d find at a wedding reception or bar mitzvah, which are the types of events this venue usually hosts.)

Matthews hit two brainbusters and a rolling cutter only for Savoy to kick out. She pulled down her kneepad and looked for a running knee but Savoy avoided it and used the exposed knee to her advantage, forcing Matthews to tap to a kneebar.

WINNER: Nicole Savoy in 22:13 to retain the Shimmer title.

-Savoy was bleeding from the mouth but still all smiles as Monroe joined her in the ring. The show ended with your two American women’s champions holding their titles high.

(Pageot’s Perspective: Savoy needs to hold onto the belt for another 80 days to surpass MsChif for the longest single reign as Shimmer Champion. With this victory she ties MsChif’s record of 15 successful defenses.)

Find Harley on Twitter @yrechoheart and listen to he and Emily Fear talk all things ROH every Wednesday on the PWTorch Dailycast “Talking Honor.”

THANK YOU FOR VISITING

THE SUMMIT AUGUST 10, 2019 TORONTO, ON AT THE MIDTOWN EVENT THEATRE REPORT BY HARLEY R.
