PAGEOT, PWTORCH CONTRIBUTOR

Commentary: Ian Riccaboni

We opened in the arena with Jay Lethal & Jonathan Gresham entering to Lethal’s music in street clothes. Lethal said they have nothing to explain. For the first time in their friendship, though, he finally saw what Gresham was saying. The wrestlers the fans love, the current champions, all have one thing in common: they do whatever the hell they want and nobody says a word. They want to level the playing field. The fact that Gresham hasn’t held gold in ROH is a crime against wrestling. They also want the tag titles.

Cue The Briscoes. Jay Briscoe said they could do it “right now.” Lethal and Gresham of course bailed. Briscoe said they were scheduled to face Kyle Fletcher & Lucky Kid later on and suggested they make it a three-way. Lethal agreed.

(Pageot’s Perspective: Lethal’s comments rang true for the most part. Rush, The Briscoes, and Villain Enterprises are all heels pushed as babyfaces to the detriment of the rest of the roster. Shane Taylor and Kelly Klein could disagree about being lumped into that category but I doubt we’ll hear from them on the matter. The problem is it’s just the zillionth slight variation on the same “wrestlers vs. ROH” story that includes, but is not limited to, ROH vs. Shane Taylor, vs. Kenny King, vs. Guerrillas Of Destiny, vs. Bully Ray, vs. The Rebellion, vs. SCUM, vs. The Prophecy…)

-Riccaboni and Colt Cabana were on commentary to start the night.

(1) VILLAIN ENTERPRISES (ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Champion Marty Scurll & Flip Gordon) vs. “HOT SAUCE” TRACY WILLIAMS & FLAMITA

Black Plague from Scurll to Flamita.

WINNERS: Villain Enterprises in 12:56.

-Cabana headed into the ring to deliver some news to the winners. He said Brody King is on the shelf with a knee injury and wouldn’t be able to team with PCO in the main event here against Rush & Jeff Cobb. Scurll said it had been a busy weekend and he hadn’t had much time to think about a replacement for King. If only there was a world class wrestler present who wasn’t already booked on the card? After some prompting from Scurll the fans eventually chanted for Cabana. He agreed.

Cabana apologized to Riccaboni for abandoning him but headed backstage to change.

(Pageot’s Perspective: I suspect King’s injury is a work. Throughout the last match they were still promoting the six-man titles being defended at next weekend’s ROH The Experience and the card for tonight as originally advertised would have seen wrestlers like Brat Pack sitting backstage for no reason. Cabana and PCO as a team ought to be a blast, even if Colt is likely going to take the pin.)

-An ad aired for Shane Taylor Promotions.

(2) SHANE TAYLOR (w/ entourage) vs. DANNY JONES – ROH WORLD TELEVISION CHAMPIONSHIP

Jones is a local Welsh wrestler who has competed in All Japan and WWE according to Riccaboni. Taylor won clean with Welcome To The Land.

WINNER: Shane Taylor in 7:52 to retain the TV title.

-Another STP ad aired.

(Pageot’s Perspective: A mauling. The STP ads are really slick and look great, which does help to differentiate them from the usual ROH production, but also draws attention to how bland and outdated ROH’s look is.)

(3) “THE LAST REAL MAN” SILAS YOUNG & RAMPAGE BROWN vs. BRAT PACK (Nick Bury & Mitch Waterman)

An all-heel match? The frat boys played the de facto heels against the “men.” Young saved Brown from taking BP’s finisher and Brown put down one of the brats with a piledriver.

WINNERS: Brown & Young in 10:28.

(Pageot’s Perspective: No dissension between the curmudgeon Young and his partner of the week.)

-Joe Hendry joined commentary for the next match.

(4) DALTON CASTLE vs. HIKULEO

Hikuleo looked to chokeslam Castle through the timekeeper’s table. Hendry got involved and took a chokeslam on the ring apron instead. Castle won with a Bang-A-Rang.

WINNER: Dalton Castle in 12:50.

(Pageot’s Perspective: Not sure how Hendry saving Castle continues their feud but we’ll see where this goes.)

-Mandy Leon joined commentary with a British accent.

(5) “THE GATEKEEPER” KELLY KLEIN vs. LANA AUSTIN – WOH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

K-Power for the win.

WINNER: Kelly Klein in 9:13 to retain the women’s title.

(Pageot’s Perspective: Austin hit a nice elbow at one point. That was about the highlight of the match.)

(6) MATT TAVEN vs. “THE PRESTIGIOUS ONE” JOE HENDRY

As Taven went for a Climax Dalton Castle’s music hit. Castle walked out and Hendry used the distraction to roll up Taven.

WINNER: Joe Hendry in 14:31.

(Pageot’s Perspective: Taven should be furious… at the ROH production team for playing Castle’s music. What were they thinking? There was a match in progress. That’s so unprofessional.)

(7) ROH WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS THE BRISCOES (Jay Briscoe & Mark Briscoe) vs. JAY LETHAL & “THE OCTOPUS” JONATHAN GRESHAM vs. SCHADENFREUDE (Kyle Fletcher & Lucky Kid) – NON-TITLE MATCH

Lethal had new heel music already. Only two men were legal at a time in this one. Gresham with multiple low blows but it was a Doomsday Device from The Briscoes to Kid for the win.

WINNERS: The Briscoes in 12:05.

-The American teams brawled again, up the steps and backstage.

(Pageot’s Perspective: Surprised the challengers didn’t get the win here to build up them chasing the champions.)

(8) “OVERKILL” MARK HASKINS (w/ Vicky Haskins) vs. KENNY KING (w/ Amy Rose)

Haskins countered a chin-checker into a sharpshooter. Rose jumped onto the apron and the referee abandoned the match to ask her to step down. King didn’t tap (as you might have expected) and Haskins released the hold for no good reason. Haskins looked for a pump-kick. King moved and Haskins took out the ref. King with low blow #3 on the night. Haskins returned the favor with low blow #4. The women checked on their men. Rose clubbed Vicky from behind. Vicky put her in a triangle choke. Mark with the same to King. King and Rose both tapped. The ref recovered. Pumphandle driver from Mark to King.

WINNER: Mark Haskins in 18:01.

(Pageot’s Perspective: Riccaboni saying, “What’s with all the low blows tonight?” killed me. There’s been an average of two low blows on every single ROH event in 2019. The only thing the bookers seem to love as much as dudes getting hit in the junk is a throwaway street fight.)

(9) ROH WORLD CHAMPION “EL TORO BLANCO” RUSH & “THE HAWAIIAN JUGGERNAUT” JEFF COBB vs. ROH WORLD SIX-MAN TAG TEAM CHAMPION PCO & COLT CABANA

Cabana and Rush started. At 11:00 the feed sputtered and went down. It returned thirty seconds later. All four men fought onto the stage. Rush kicked PCO down the steps and he disappeared for a sequence so that the other two could double-team Cabana. PCO returned to hit a cannonball off the stage that took out Rush and Cobb. PCOsault to Cobb but Rush broke up the pin. Rush wanted The Bull’s Horns on Cabana but Cobb stopped him. Cobb with Tour Of The Islands but Rush pushed him off and took the pin.

WINNERS: Rush & Cobb in 17:25.

-The fans booed the babyface winners for bickering like small children. They shoved each other, then tusseled on the mat as the show went off the air.

THANK YOU FOR VISITING

ROH HONOR UNITED OCTOBER 26, 2019 NEWPORT, WALES AT THE NEWPORT CENTRE AIRED ON ROH HONOR CLUB REPORT BY HARLEY R.
