Arena Reports
1/7 WWE SD/ECW in Elmira, N.Y.: Edge vs. Batista, Punk vs. Chavo vs. Shelton, Nattie vs. Victoria Jan 8, 2008 - 1:59:34 PM
WWE Smackdown/ECW house show
January 7, 2008
Elmira, N.Y. at First Arena
Report by Jim Bennett, PWTorch reader
(1) Jamie Noble beat Deuce with a backslide.
(2) Nattie Neidhart defeated Victoria with a combination back stabber/bridge pin. Kelly Kelly was the special referee and after the match Victoria jumped Nattie but Kelly made the save. Nattie was surprisingly over considering she has yet to be on TV.
(3) The Miz & John Morrison defeated Jimmy Wang Yang & Shannon Moore to retain the Tag Titles when Morrison hit the roll of the dice on Yang. A shell of their TV matches, not alot of action minus some good kick action my Yang.
(4) Kenny Dykstra defeated Charles Evans, whom they announced as being from nearby Rochester, probably just to get him some kind of face pop. Dykstra got the pin after rolling up Evans and using the tights. For those who dont know Evans from OVW he looks like a bigger D-Von Dudley.
(5) Tommy Dreamer defeated Kevin Thorn with the DDT. There really was not much here at all. Not stalling but just very slow paced action. I have no idea why they stripped Thorn of his gimmick as he is no longing even interesting to look at.
(6) Finlay defeated U.S. Champion MVP by disqualification. This match contained some outside brawling that included MVP smashing Finlay's head into the steps. Finlay bled, most likely hardway, from the step bump. They kept teasing Hornswaggle being under the ring, but of course he never came. Finish saw saw MVP blatantly hit Finlay in the leg with a chair in front of the ref.
(7) C.M. Punk defeated Chavo Guerrero and Shelton Benjamin in a three-way dance to retain his ECW Title. Standard 3 way match with 1 guy out of action for most of the time. Finish saw Chavo hit a frog splash, Benjamin hitting his Exploder, and finally Punk hitting a pretty impressive looking Go To Sleep on Benjamin.
(8) Kofi Kingston defeated Nunzio in a short match. Having never seen Kofi before I can tell you this guy is athletic as hell. He was jumping around like he has springs in his boots. Between Smackdown/ECW he could have some entertaining/athletic bouts with alot of guys. He knocked out Nunzio with the Pele kick
(9) Edge defeated Batista by pinfall. Edge played the chickenshit heel for a good 10 minutes before Big Dave finally got his hands on him. Some pretty decent outside the ring brawling as Edge was working Batistas left shoulder, ramming him into the post several times, once sounding pretty rough. Several times Edge tried to run and finally Teddy Long came out and said if Edge were counted out or DQ he would lose the title. Batista took over and was setting him up for the Batista bomb until the edge heads came in and distracted him. Batista over powered them and had Edge up, but the ref was distracted and Edge hit Batista in the head with the Big Gold Belt to score the pinfall. Afterwards, Batista cleaned house on all 3 to pop the crowd
Crowd Size: This is the most people I had seen at a WWE in Elmira since they have come to the First Arena. They sold seats in every section of the place. This is probably because they are advertising it was the only time this year they are coming. I would say they drew 4000 easily, maybe that number gets them back here sooner
BIGGEST POPS
1. Batista and it was not even close! This guy could have run for mayor last night, everything he did was so over it was ridiculous
2. C.M. Punk
3. Finlay
Leaving the arena there were street people handing out flyers saying TNA is going to run this arena on Feb. 23. Will be interesting to see if they draw here.
QUICK TIPS FOR SENDING RESULTS
If you attend an arena event in future, either house shows or TV tapings, we encourage you to send us a report for publication. You can direct your reports to "matchresults07" (@pwtorch. com).
We accept reports in any format, but if it's not much trouble, please format your report like you see above, with the matches numbered like this (1) , (2) , (3) , with the opening line of each match paragraph stating who beat whom (don't just say Wrestler A vs. Wrestler beat with the result listed later; instead, state up front who won so those readers who don't have time to read the entire report (i. e. their boss walks past their cubicle all the time looking beat their shoulder) can at least quickly assess the results.
Also, please list tag teams using the "&" symbol as opposed to stating "and. " Reserve use of " and" when listing results in a three-way or four-way match where there are no teams (i. e. " Wrestler A beat Wrestler B and Wrestler C in a three-way match" ) so it is easy to differentiate a handicap match from a three-way match.
If you know HTML coding for bolding, you can also bold out the first line of each match description. If you don't know HTML symbols, then we can add those ourselves.
Special thanks to everyone who helps us with reports on live events!
