WWE Raw house show report
April 9, 2010
Glasgow, Scotland
Report by Jonathan Geddes, Torch reader

The arena was close to a sell-out, with only a few empty seats to be seen. There were a good number of families and kids in contrast to the recent TNA show, which was dominated by 20-somethings. Most kids were clad in the orange John Cena shirt. Justin Richards was the ring announcer.

(1) Christian defeated Chavo Guerrero. Big pop for Christian, though a "Chavo" chant went up too. A lot of typical house show stalling early, but it picked up nicely as the match went on. After an unsuccessful Killswitch attempt, Christian finally hit the Killswitch on the second try, and he picked up the pin about ten minutes in. Good, entertaining opener that got the crowd going.

(2) Evan Bourne defeated Dos Caras. No one knew who Caras was, but he cut a quick promo in Spanish at the start to get some heat. His offense looked crisp throughout, and the crowd got quite into the match, as they played up the size difference between him and Bourne nicely. Bourne won after knocking him off the turnbuckles and hitting the Air Bourne. After the match, Sheamus hit the ring, booted Bourne in the face, and promised to win the WWE Title back in the main event.

(3) Divas champion Maryse beat Eve and Kelly Kelly to retain the Divas Title. Kelly was hugely popular. Eve, in contrast, was not. A lot of the dads in attendance seemed rather more interested in this one than any other match. Maryse walked out early, and was tossed back in, before it went into the typical WWE triple threat style, with one wrestler always outside the ring. Maryse eventually won by pinning Kelly after several minutes.

Chris Masters came out and challenged anyone to a Masterlock challenge. Cue up Hornswoggle, who was waving a Scottish flag. The crowd went wild. He continually kicked Masters in the shins, knocked him into a chair, and then splashed him from the top rope. Silly, but fun segment that the crowd ate up.

(4) Randy Orton beat Ted DiBiase & Cody Rhodes in a handicap match. DiBiase had the Million Dollar belt, while Rhodes was wearing boxing headgear "as a result of being punted at WrestleMania." Orton got a huge, huge reaction. Fairly slow pace early, but still a decent match. DiBiase and Rhodes teased dissension at points. Orton hit his double DDT spot on both, which was impressive to see. The finish saw DiBiase attempt Dream Street, but Orton threw him off, then RKO'd Rhodes for the pin.

[Intermission]

(5) MVP beat William Regal. Since Regal is English, he was obviously hugely over as a heel. He cut a hilarious promo beforehand, claiming he'd prefer to be in Iraq than Glasgow as it was more civilized. He said any visitors should watch their pockets and that Drew McIntyre is a great Scottish representative as "he's a total div." Fantastic stuff, leading to big Scotland chants throughout the match. The match was mainly stalling, though Regal's facial expressions were hugely entertaining. MVP won with a big kick.

(6) Kofi Kingston beat U.S. champion The Miz via DQ, Miz retained the U.S. Title. Miz talked about the United States Title's lineage and name-dropped Dusty Rhodes, Harley Race, and Steve Austin. Nice stuff for a few minutes, then Big Show wandered out and attacked Kofi. Mark Henry made the save, and we got...

(7) Unified tag champions ShoMiz (The Miz & Big Show) beat Kofi Kingston & Mark Henry to retain the Unified Tag Team titles when Show pinned Kingston. Miz tried to claim they couldn’t defend the titles, as Big Show's titles weren't there, which predictably prompted another ref to come out holding the titles. Fairly lengthy match, with Henry being worked over for most of it. Show delivered some decent comedy when stretching and exercising prior to locking up. Some of Kingston's offense looked great, in particular a huge cross body-block off the top. Show eventually pinned him after a chokeslam.

(8) WWE champion John Cena beat Sheamus to retain the WWE Title. Beforehand, Bret Hart was introduced as the ringside enforcer. Big pop, and rightfully so. Sheamus had tons of heel heat, and the crowd was very pro-Cena, with only a small pocket of fans booing him. Longest match of the night, clocking in at about 20 minutes. Quite slow, and straightforward, but the heat for it was strong, and the last several minutes were good, as they traded some big moves, with Sheamus hitting the big kick and Cena getting the STF. Sheamus taunted Hart regularly, and inevitably, the ref got decked, and Hart slid in. Sheamus took a swing at him, Hart blocked it, punched him, and Cena hit the Attitude Adjustment for the three count delivered by Hart.

Afterward, they wandered around the ring celebrating before Hart headed up the aisle. Cena took the mic and said it was an honor to be in the same ring as the Hitman, and that Hart had taken the business to new heights. A nice way to end the show.

Overall, it was a thoroughly entertaining evening, with mostly solid wrestling, the odd comic spot, and the Bret Hart appearance too.
