WWE Smackdown house show results
April 20, 2011
Brussels, Belgium
Report by Niels de Ruijter, PWTorch reader
It was my fourth WWE show in Brussels, but this one was by far the best one. At this show, the crowd was younger than at past shows with a lot of "new" fans. Before the show the crowd was actually quite dead, not like in years past. The crowd woke up with Ric Flair-style Whoos throughout the arena.
The crowd jump-started when the lights dimmed and Tony Chimel introduced himself to start the first match.
(1) Kofi Kingston won a battle royal to face IC champion Wade Barrett later in the show. It was a pretty standard battle royal compared to others I've seen. The Superstars seemed to have a lot of fun with it. Chris Masters, Jack Swagger, and Kofi Kingston were the last three remaining and Kofi won by eliminating Swagger.
(2) Chavo Guerrero beat Tyler Reks. Some other fans on the front row and I got a great reaction from Tyler, who looks very impressive in-person. Chavo enjoyed himself playing face and won with the frog splash!
(3) Beth Phoenix & Kelly Kelly beat Layla & Rosa Mendes. Layla is really funny - she played a little girl who was scared of Beth. The heels worked for a long time on Kelly, who made the hot tag to Beth and she finished with the Glamslam.
(4) Jack Swagger beat Chris Masters via submission. It was a slow match with the crowd rooting for both guys. Many reversals until Jack applied his Anklelock and Masters tapped out.
(5) WWE tag champions Big Show & Kane beat Justin Gabriel & Heath Slater to retain the WWE Tag Titles. Show & Kane were introduced as tag champions after taking the titles at the Smackdown TV taping the night before. They looked like they were really enjoying themselves, playing around with the heels. They won the match by hitting dual chokeslams for the pin. After the match, Big Show took time to autograph signs (including mine). Kane took time just to sign one and waited on the ramp for Big Show.
[Intermission]
Tony Chimel promoted WWE movies and merchandise. He also threw some t-shirts into the audience.
(6) Intercontinental champion Wade Barrett (w/Ezekiel Jackson) beat Kofi Kingston to retain the Intercontinental Title. Ezekiel was fun on the outside and played with the crowd throughout the match, which was back and forth. At the end, Kofi tried to go for Trouble in Paradise, but Barrett reversed into Wasteland for the win.
Cody Rhodes then came out with a translator so all of the audience could understand his promo. The promo itself was about being ugly and everyone who was front row was ugly, in his opinion. He got a paper bag to put over their heads before Rey Mysterio came out.
(7) Rey Mysterio beat Cody Rhodes via submission. The match itself was fast-paced with some good spots. The match ended with a 619 going into a Camel Clutch for the submission finish.
Tony thanked the crowd and hoped we will come back next time. Then, Edge came out to the biggest pop of the night. He had a great promo about his retirement and WWE wanting to pull him off the tour. He was interrupted by Alberto Del Rio, who wanted to be recognized as the guy who retired Edge. Edge said he's the acting Smackdown GM and he brought out Christian to face Alberto in a crowd's choice match.
(8) Christian beat Alberto Del Rio in a Brussels Street Fight. A slow start, but then they went to the outside for a steel chair and a kendo stick. Christian got beat up badly by Alberto with the kendo stick and sold bruised ribs. No use of a steel chair, though. During the match, Alberto tried walking out of the match by leaving up the ramp backstage, but Christian beat him down the ramp to the ring. Brodus Clay then tried to hit Christian, but ended up receiving a big hit from the kendo stick. Then, Christian hit the Killswitch and Edge came out again to call for the spear for the win.
After the match, Christian and Edge did a Five Second Pose. Then, the Smackdown roster came out and the faces came to the ring to celebrate with Edge and Christian.
Christian did a quick round because he was selling that he was really hurt. Edge really took the time for everyone. Overall, a great show. The Superstars and Divas did their best and the crowd was really into the matches.
Biggest Pops:
(1) Edge
(2) Rey Mysterio
(3) Kofi Kingston
Biggest Heat:
(1) Alberto Del Rio
(2) The Corre
(3) Jack Swagger
