Former WWE main eventer and champion, Brock Lesnar, stepped in front of what was surely the biggest UFC PPV audience ever, and probably more viewers than have ever watched WrestleMania in the North America by a large percentage, and destroyed top challenger Frank Mir.
UFC audience text voting picked by Lesnar by a 56-44 margin going into the fight. UFC color commentator Joe Rogan called it a toss-up.
Lesnar, playing a strong heel role - a genuine expression of his personality given MMA hardcore fans rejecting him in certain circles as a fake entertainer early in his UFC career - refused to tap gloves with Mir before the fight.
When the fight began, it didn't take long for Lesnar to power Mir onto his back and smother him chest-on-chest while shoving his left hand around MIr's throat to disrupt his breathing and ability to move his head. He then wrapped his left around around Mir's neck and took calculated powerful right punches to his head. The crowd booed Lesnar's methodical approach, but Lesnar stuck with the strategy effectively until late in the round where Mir shifted position, perhaps one more advantageous for his expertise as jiu jitsu artist - billed by Rogan as perhaps the best in MMA heavyweight history. During the round Mir signaled to his corner a few times he was fine, indicating he was just waiting patiently for an opening.
When the first round ended, with Lesnar a clear winner on points, Mir stood up with a bloodied, bruised, swollen face, but he smiled wide as if to indicate he felt better than he looked.
In the second round, after a brief stand-up exchange where Mir connected with at least one elbow that seemed to slightly effect Lesnar, Lesnar powered Mir to the mat again. This time, he maneuvered Mir against the fence, grabbed his wrist to prevent MIr from protecting himself, and began throwing sweeping roundhouse rights near the mat that snuck under Mir's right arm and landed. Mir survived a couple, but Lesnar sensed a big opening as Mir had nowhere to go. Lesnar pummeled Mir with a series of rights knocking Mir out and causing the ref to step in.
Lesnar celebrated as Mir regained consciousness. Once Mir came to, he fought off trainers and pushed his way to his feet. Lesnar strode aggressively toward Mir and told him to "talk his shit now." Lesnar was so crazed and worked up, officials had to step in to tell him to calm down. He took a couple deep breaths and told them, "Give me space and I will." Lesnar then looked at the crowd, which was booing him at this point, and gave them two middle fingers.
Rogan interviewed Lesnar after the fight. He boasted about his win, said he'll be drinking Coors Light because Bud Light won't give him good sponsorship money, and said he might even "get on top of my wife tonight." His wife, Rena, formerly Sable in WWE, walked at his side as Lesnar returned to the back.
Mir was shown sitting on a stool in the background listening to Lesnar's celebration speech. Mir had compared Lesnar's punches to a little sister punching you and pulling your hair. He expressed supreme confidence he'd beat Lesnar for a second time, joking that Lesnar is learning how to defend moves he doesn't know the names of that he mastered years ago.
Rogan interviewed Mir, who spoke graciously about his gameplan not working. He said he made a mistake and let Lesnar grab his wrist and leave him defenseless. "I guess I have more to learn," he said with a shrug, and then added that he's young and he'll come back. Rogan had asked whether he would come back since Mir has a history of taking losses hard. Mir smiled and seemed to accept that he lost to a phenom who's only getting better with each fight. As much as Mir talked up his chances against Lesnar, there's no shame in losing to Lesnar who has defeated soundly two very experienced MMA veterans, "Crazy Horse" Heath Herring with a ton of international big fight experience, and UFC Hall of Famer and all-time great Randy Couture.
Keller's Analysis: I predicted a Lesnar TKO win in round three. I am not surprised by how the fight went, but nobody could realistically have confidence in picking this one. This seemed like the most likely outcome. As good as Mir looked striking Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in his last fight, Lesnar's size, power, and wrestling background was likely going to negate that if he was smart enough to go for takedowns and not stand and exchange with Mir. He was smart enough. Mir was a class act in the loss. A lot of his confidence in pre-fight statements may have been an attempt to get inside the head of Lesnar. He may have genuinely believed this very outcome was likely or at least very possible. He knew of Lesnar's power from their previous fight, which he won by submission, and he knew Lesnar was going to be much better and more experienced this time around.
This dominating victory for Lesnar could also be a victory for Fedor Emelianenko. Fedor is considered the best heavyweight in the world and, by many, the best MMA fighter in any weight class of all-time. He and the UFC have not been able to agree on a contract for a fight, in part because Fedor's management team wants to partner on the event. If Lesnar walks through the next challenger or two as he did Mir - and there isn't anyone on the horizon who would necessarily be able to stand up to Lesnar's dominating size and power any better than Mir (Shane Carwin? Cain Velasquez?) - a Fedor vs. Lesnar fight has to happen. With Lesnar coming off as such a strong heel, MMA fans will want Fedor to shut him up. If Lesnar beats Fedor, Lesnar might as well retire because there won't be anything more to accomplish. Since Mir beat Lesnar the first time, a tie-breaker down the line is a distinct possibility, depending on Mir and Lesnar either each winning or each losing their next fight or two.
