ETC. News: Rock's next film, "Southland Tales," gets release date after controversy threatened it Oct 19, 2007 - 12:42:49 PM
-Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's next film will be watched closely by the movie industry coming after above-expectations performance of "The Gameplan." His next film to be released is "Southland Tales," a controversial film set in a near-future quasi-police state America, which has been delayed due to what Cinematical says came "after an avalanche of largely negative reviews." There was concern after director Richard Kelly began re-editing it whether it would ever resurface. Now it has resurfaced with a release date of Nov. 9.
WK ANALYSIS: I predicted that "The Gameplan" would flop because it just seemed too cliched and familiar (from what I saw of the commercials and trailor) and that Rock didn't have a built-in audience as young as the kids (who were in diapers when Rock last wrestled) the movie was marketed to. Plus, football was the theme and a little girl was the co-star with Rock - it all just seemed prime for failure. And it wasn't. So what do I know? But I don't think there's a reason the success of "The Gameplan" should influence the success of "Southland Tales" since they seem to be such different movies with a different target audience. The only benefit will be free media taking Rock more seriously, thus giving the movie more p.r., but also perhaps more scrutiny. Early bad reviews can destroy box office potential of a movie like this.
