DGUSA champion Johnny Gargano says his heel turn at WrestleCon Weekend in April was planned one year in advance.

"We've known this for a while," Gargano exclusively told PWTorch columnist Pat McNeill on Wednesday's PWTorch Livecast. "It was one of those things where - I was sitting in a parking lot in a grocery store and (DGUSA head booker) Gabe Sapolsky called me on the phone. I had been toying around with the idea for a while and Gabe said it. I was like, 'Yeah, I was thinking the same exact thing.'"

Gargano, who is scheduled to defend the DGUSA Title this weekend on Internet PPV at WWNLive.com, says the past year of DGUSA/Evolve shows leading to WrestleCon Weekend contained subtle hints at the heel turn.

"Very luckily, we are on the same page with a lot of the same things and ideas. We share a lot of the same philosophies," Gargano said of his relationship with Sapolsky. "So, we had that idea for about a good year. It's funny because if you watch a lot of little things leading up to that weekend, we almost paint the picture. If you go back and watch some of the DGUSA and some Evolve shows and my promos leading up to that weekend, we almost paint that picture of what was going to happen. It was very subtle."

As for his future in wrestling, Gargano says he's not looking too far into the future of potentially moving to the major-leagues, even as top independent wrestlers sign with WWE.

"You never know. Wrestling is a funny business. You never know what's going to happen. I've always been in the mindset that I want to do everything I possibly can do in the indies before I go off and maybe go to WWE or somewhere along those lines," Gargano said on the Livecast.

"I've always looked up to guys like C.M. Punk, like Daniel Bryan, who spent countless years on the indies building up the indies and making it seem better than it really was, and making it mean that much more for young guys like me. If I have the chance to do that, which I feel like I kind of do, I want to spend as much time as I can before I really feel like I'm ready to go and potentially leave indy wrestling behind."
