TNA News: Matt Morgan compliments himself on promos, explains WWE stuttering gimmick, evaluates Brock Lesnar

By James Caldwell, PWTorch columnist

Matt Morgan says one of the key differences between WWE and TNA is that WWE told him what his gimmick would be, while TNA let him give him input based on his perceived strengths and weaknesses. In addition, Jeff Jarrett gave him a gameplan to slowly build him up, while he feels WWE wasn't utilizing his strengths.

"TNA is letting me speak. Not every giant has to be some stoic goof," Morgan told Jim Varsallone of the Miami Herald. "They could have brought me in like they did Test and said, 'Here is a former WWE talent. We're going to introduce him against Abyss next week,' the first time I came here. They didn't do that. They built me nice and slow, and they put their own brand on me. It meant more. From that, I evolved into the Matt Morgan I am now."

He says the goal of putting him in the role of Jim Cornette's bodyguard for several months on Impact was to slowly build to his big "reveal" as a powerhouse wrestler that fans would be anticipating.

"That's how I became a better wrestler and especially a good promo person based on being under Cornette's tutelage and him paying attention to me," he said. "Jeff was right. Less is more. The slower the build, the better the payoff. He was dead set on bringing me along nice and slow in the bodyguard type role which they don't so anymore. The bodyguards get rushed into wrestling. This lasted six to eight months."

Morgan also details what the philosophy was behind his stuttering gimmick in WWE prior to being released. He compliments Vince McMahon on being a genius with a plan, but says the plan of him being a big, jacked-up heel with an Achilles heel of stuttering simply didn't work out.

"I understood the whole gimmick," Morgan said. "I practiced. ... It just didn't fit. At the end of the day, it was like trying to ram a square through a circle hole. It was a great opportunity, just not the right opportunity for me. That's just the way business is."

Regarding one of the big topics of conversation coming up in November, Brock Lesnar, Morgan says he's a very fast learner and will be successful in UFC.

"He's going to be exactly what we saw with him on Smackdown now in the UFC. He's doing it right now, and he will continue doing it. He has the quickest athletic aptitude I'd ever seen in my life. He picks up things like that [snaps his fingers]. His aptitude is ridiculous," Morgan said.

"Watching him work night in and night out in that ring is really where I learned to work big. I learned by watching him and listening to Undertaker and a lot from Kane as well. That helped me a lot."

Caldwell's Analysis: To be quite honest, Morgan's promos in TNA have been hit or miss, mostly miss. A simple coaching evaluation would be exactly what he said in this interview: "Less is more." Rambling, especially in a very loud voice, will instantly turn off an audience.

The comparison was pretty easy to spot in the promos between Morgan and Abyss on the live Impact last Thursday. Morgan was talking 1,001 miles-per-hour, while Abyss slowly made his point. Abyss might not have had any good material to work with, but he did his best to connect with the TV audience. Morgan is moving way too fast in his promos, as if he's regularly downing three Red Bulls prior to recording his promos.
