TNA News: Sting says he's throwing in the towel and won't renew his TNA contract

By Wade Keller, Torch editor

The latest word out of the TNA locker room is that Sting has been telling colleagues he doesn't plan to renew his contract with TNA and he'll be finishing up at this fall's Bound for Glory. He planned to walk away last year, but was talked into putting in another year with a tempting offer and a feeling he could contribute more to the promotion's growth.

Keller's Analysis: Sting has probably done what he's going to do with TNA's growth. The novelty of seeing "a big star from the 1990s" has worn off where now he's just one of the TNA big boys in 2009. He's got a teenage son and he's 50 years old, so retirement seems most likely. However, if he walks away, there's still a chance WWE will knock on his door with an offer to come in and try add an extra oomph to the WrestleMania 26 line-up with his first and only WWE in-ring appearance. I don't think he's planning to walk away from TNA for that reason, and he could always be talked into returning once again (it's a common strategy to drive up one's price by insisting you're preference is to walk away and retire), but if he does walk away, WWE has to at least consider it.

As Sting wraps up his TNA run in the next several months, he doesn't have a lot of big match-ups left on paper that would necessarily pop a buyrate. If Ken Anderson (Kennedy) joins TNA before Sting leaves, they could rush into one big match there which Anderson could win to give him a boost, but it seems more likely Sting will go out a winner in a big singles match against an established TNA heel on Bound for Glory on Oct. 18, 2009.
