TNA News: Kevin Nash interview - TNA schedule like taking a baseball bat shot, avoiding disaster vs. Foley at the PPV

TNA wrestler Kevin Nash said TNA might have a lighter, more attractive schedule compared to WWE, but he still feels like he's been beaten with a baseball bat after TNA's schedule of a PPV, then three days of TV tapings.

"When we do a pay-per-view and then the four TV’s following in three days, by the end of that I feel like somebody’s put me in a plastic bag and beat me with an aluminum bat," Nash told Alfonso Castillo in an interview for Newsday. "I need at least a week to recover physically. And for the guys that are on the WWE ... roster, they’re out three, four, five nights a week. And it’s just a hard life. It’s a grueling life. And people break down."

Nash said he's physically worn out going into this Sunday's PPV match against Mick Foley for the Legends Title. He said they don't want to have a bad match, though, and they don't want a bunch of run-ins to save them. Nash said they have something to prove at their age and with as much mileage on their bodies.

"We’ve got a week left before we go in there. And you know, Mick’s beat up. I’m beat up. Mick’s not going to create movement for me. So, it’s like, what, smoke and mirrors? We don’t want run-ins," Nash said. "We want to go out there and do the best we can with our brains, and hopefully our bodies will be able to push the stories through."

Nash continued: "But this is something that Mick and I are taking pride in because, you know, on paper this could be Oz-Kazmaier II," Nash said. "If I could come out of that with people saying, 'God, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be,' I’d be happy with that, you know?"

Nash's reference to "Oz-Kazmaier II" was from the WCW Halloween Havoc '91 PPV when he wrestled as Oz against journeyman pro wrestler Bill Kazmaier in a forgettable four-minute match.

Caldwell's Analysis: Nice piece of "lowering expectations" from Nash for the match on Sunday. One of the hardest things about the wrestling business - and life, in general - is balancing wisdom with youthful mobility. Nash and Foley have the psychology, but their bodies are broken down. X Division wrestlers have fresh bodies by comparison, but, as evidenced by the spotfests that regularly fill TNA PPVs, they generally don't have psychology. Some X Division wrestlers have it more than others, but when the body starts to fall apart, wrestlers get smarter in the ring simply to survive and keep earning a check. When a wrestler works smarter before his body breaks down, that's where the art flourishes.

A wrestler like John Morrison has all of the physical tools to be a star, but WWE is working him very hard right now. Two straight weeks of two TV matches means more exposure to the audience, but more bumps and bruises, especially taking dives to the outside in every match. Morrison is one of WWE's top wrestlers and he just needs to work smart to save his body for future PPV main events when his name will be called.
