TNA/ROH News: Rob Terry talks Global Title win, Desmond Wolfe says he's physically healthy not "destroying" himself in ROH

-- Rob Terry claimed to the U.K. Sun that the decision to put the Global Title on him at Wednesday night's TNA house show in his home area of Cardiff, Wales was a last-second decision.

"I didn't know until late on that is was going to be a title match," Terry said. "It was a real last-minute thing. That surprise on my face was real."

-- Desmond Wolfe (Nigel McGuinness in ROH) says his body is in better physical condition working a lighter TNA style in the ring compared to the physically-demanding ROH style.

"Touch wood, yes it’s been good, but I never want to tempt fate. It’s a different style, much less injurious, you’re not going 25 minutes and then doing 150 moves at the end so you end up destroying yourself," Wolfe told the Daily Star.

"TNA is more about longevity and looking after yourself. Not that ROH wasn't, it was just that they had a style the fans expected to see and couldn't see anywhere else. It's the same with the old ECW, guys were dropping like flies there, but it's difficult to change style without losing your fan base.”

Caldwell's Analysis: Last week, I was working on a column on this particular subject after watching the Bryan Danielson vs. Davey Richards stand-out match from ROH's Sept. 25 show. Danielson vs. Richards was one of the best matches I've seen in a long time, but also one of the most-concerning matches I've seen in a long time, as they beat the crap out of each other in a 35-minute match. No, they weren't throwing potatoes for 35 minutes and yes, they're two of the best workers who know how to protect each other, but it was a very physical, brutal match. Jim Cornette's quote from a U.K. Sun interview captured it pretty well.

"In the old days, the fans thought we were hurting each other but we really weren't," he said. "Now, the guys are really hurting each other and the fans don't believe anything because they were told it's phony."

The end result is wrestlers dealing with injury after injury and their bodies completely beat up. McGuinness (Desmond Wolfe) dealt with head injuries and concussions. Danielson admitted he needed to sign with WWE to pay for medical bills from his wrestling career. Tyler Black has fought chronic neck issues. Those are just three examples.

The next stage for ROH will be finding a way to deliver the physical wrestling style that the fanbase enjoys because it can't be found consistently anywhere else in the U.S., but not at the expense of wrestler health. One of Jim Cornette's priorities in ROH should be coaching the wrestlers on how to tell the same story without needing to beat the crap out of each other. The style needs to evolve and find the right balance between being physical, snug, and tight, but not to the point where wrestlers can't walk around normally by the time they hit 40.
