KELLER'S ECW TV REPORT 10/9: Ongoing "virtual time" coverage - Punk vs. Morrison Oct 9, 2007 - 10:44:51 PM
KELLER'S ECW REPORT
OCTOBER 9, 2007
LIVE FROM DETROIT, MICH.
WHAT HAPPENED: 1ST HALF
-The show opened with clips of the ripoff ECW Title match from two nights earlier at No Mercy. They did slow-mo imagry of C.M. Punk gasping for breath after being crushed by Big Daddy V.
-The ECW opening aired featuring all three or four remaining ECW roster members. JoeyStyles and Tazz plugged the TV main event of Punk vs. John Morrison. Tazz wondered what kind of shape Punk would be in after what happened Sunday.
Tommy Dreamer [artist Joseph Borzotta (c) PWTorch]
1 -- BIG DADDY V (w/Matt Striker) vs. TOMMY DREAMER
A brief soundbite aired in the corner of the screen as BDV entered the ring. He said he showed Punk no mercy (get it) on Sunday and he will show Dreamer no mercy tonight. BDV pounded Dreamer from the start with his methodical style. He knocked Dreamer to the floor, then followed and slapped his chest hard before throwing him back into the ring. Dreamer made a Tommy Dreamer comebackwith a slidekick and some punches which had no effect on BDV. BDV knocked Dreamer out of mid-air when Dreamer plopped off the second tope with an attempt at a flying move. He then crushed him in the corner and followed with a Samoan drop and big elbow for the win.
WINNER: Big Daddy V in 2:00.
STAR RATING: 1/2* -- Tazz and Styles did their best to make it seem like watching BDV wrestle was scary and ominous and even exciting. Dreamer played his part of the punching bag well.
-Styles and Tazz pluged the Punk vs. Morrison main event.
-A No Mercy video aired pushing the encore presentation.
[Commercial Break]
2 -- KEVIN THORN vs. JAMES CURTIS
Curtis hit a nice missile dropkick off the second rope in the opening seconds, but was taken down with a hard clothesline seconds later. A crawler plugged that the ECW Title match for Cyber Sunday will be announced at noon tomorrow at WWE.com. Styles said in lieu of that announcement, everyone in the locker room will be trying to curry favor from G.M. Armando Estrada. Thorn settled into a chinlock. Tazz taked about James Curtis wrestling with "James" on the back of his trunks, his first name rather than his last; that puzzled him. Thorn lifted Curtis for a powerbomb off the top rope, but it didn't go well at all. They basically slipped and fell to the mat. Thorn went for a pin anyway and scored a two count. He finished Curtis with his Original Sin finisher.
WINNER: Thorn in 4:00.
STAR RATING: 3/4* -- The powerbomb screw up was a bit odd as it seemed Thorn didn't set up Curtis properly for it but kept going with it anyway. Otherwise a smooth, decent enhancement match.
-A clip aired of Kelly Kelly accepting Balls Mahoney's invite to go on a date with him and Miz's subsequent threat to fire Kelly if she did since he owns her contract.
-Backstage, Miz asked Kelly what she was thinking. "Balls isn't a chick magnet like myself," he said, asking what she sees him in. He wondered if she has bad eye sight. He said he'd be in his corner and get an eye full of him tonight.
[Commercial Break]
-A vignette aired promoting the DVD release of "The Condemned."
3 -- THE MIZ (w/Kelly) vs. BALLS MAHONEY
Tazz said it's got to really hurt Balls to have Miz prevent Kelly from dating him because he probably has a tough time getting anyone to go out with him. Styles complained that Miz being someone's manager doesn't mean he owns him. At 2:00 Balls was in control. After a bodyslam, he played to the crowd and then stepped onto the apron. As Balls was distracted by Kelly waving at him, Balls charged at him and knocked him to the floor. Balls was unable to answer the referee's ten count. After the match, Miz kicked Mahoney's stuff bear (a gift from Kelly) into the crowd. Kelly looked crushed. "What kind of human being kicks a Teddy bear!?" exclaimed Styles. Tazz said, "That's definitely not cool." Ah, such commentary brings back memories of the edgy ECW of the mid-'90s.
WINNER: Miz in 3:00 via countout.
STAR RATING: 1/2*
-A long vignette aired on John Morrison.
[Commercial Break]
-The Raw Rebound aired. Then Styles and Tazz reacted to the surprise return of Shawn Michaels. Then they hyped Cyber Sunday and went right to the Cyber Sunday vignette that also aired on Raw.
-Morrison made his ring entrance.
[Commercial Break]
-A video recap aired of the Punk-BDV PPV "match" from Sunday aired.
4 -- JOHN MORRISON vs. C.M. PUNK
Punk came out with his ribs taped. Styles and Tazz argued over whether Morrison should take any mercy on Pun and try to not just win, but also hurt him. Morrison nailed Punk with a cartwheel kick to the head, then applied an abdominal stretch. At 3:00 they fought at ringside with Morrison reversing a Punk suplex attempt and dropping him ribs-first across the steel steps.
[Commercial Break]
After the break, Morrison continued to work over Punk's ribs as fans entertained themselves with a Hogan chant, aimed at a Hogan look-alike in the front row on camera. Punk made a comeback at 11:00 and went for the Go 2 Sleep, but Morrison blocked it and kicked Punk in his taped ribs. After some back and forth exchanges, Morrison knocked Punk off balance on the top turnbuckle and then hit an overhead facebuster from there for the three count. Punk looked to be in agonizing pain afterward as Morrison gloated on the rampway. Styles said it was retribution for Morrison to beat the reigning champ who holds a title that was once his.
WINNER: Morrison in 14:00.
STAR RATING: Good TV match with a backstory playing up Punk's injured ribs keeping things dramatic. That finisher looked really scary. (**)
