CALDWELL'S ECW ON SCI-FI REPORT 10/9: Punk vs. Morrison, V squashes, Thorn botches, Miz punts Oct 9, 2007 - 10:33:04 PM
ECW TV Report
October 9, 2007 in Detroit, Mich.
Year 2, Week 18 (Week 70 overall) on Sci-Fi
They opened the show with a recap of C.M. Punk winning at the PPV by DQ to retain the belt, then Big Daddy V squashing him like a bug.
Tonight, it's C.M. Punk vs. that guy who was off TV for a while without any explanation. It's non-title between Punk and Morrison tonight.
Big Daddy V came out with Matt Striker and they cut to an inset promo from earlier in the day when V said he would take out Tommy Dreamer tonight.
1 -- BIG DADDY V (w/Matt Striker) vs. TOMMY DREAMER
Dreamer has the PPV t-shirt on. This can't be good. V dominated the first two minutes before Dreamer tried a comeback with forearm blows, only to run into V's massive chest. V then crushed Dreamer in the corner with a man boob splash before nailing a Samoan Drop. He did the Vader hang signal before dropping an elbow to the chest for the win.
WINNER: V in 3:00. Another squash. Nothing to see here until they find someone to challenge him. (1/2*)
[Commercial Break]
They aired a video package on the diva search.
2 -- KEVIN THORN vs. JAMES CURTIS
Thorn went to work on the lower back in the early going. He continued to work the lower back until Curtis made a two-second comeback with an elbow strike. Thorn slapped young Curtis in the face before landing forearm blows. Styles and Tazz pointed out that Curtis has his first name on his tights. It's only natural he would do that. Sweet goodness, Thorn almost broke Curtis's neck with a botched torture rack slam. Thorn then hit the hangman's stunner, Original Sin, for the win.
WINNER: Thorn in 4:00. That was not good. And dangerous. Not a good formula for a squash match. (DUD)
They cut to footage from last week when Kelly Kelly said yes to Balls, but then rescinded her answer when Miz threatened to pull her ECW contract. So, it's Miz vs. Balls tonight. Backstage, Miz asked Kelly if she was serious about Balls. He asked what she sees in Balls. Miz told her that she's getting an eyeful tonight. That's just wrong. He then said Kelly will be in his corner tonight.
[Commercial Break]
They aired a video package on The Condemned.
3 -- THE MIZ (w/Kelly Kelly) vs. BALLS MAHONEY
Tazz quickly pointed out the obvious that Miz is pimping Extreme Expose by owning their contracts. Balls started the match on the offensive before Miz caught him with a facebuster in the corner. Balls came back with an overhead toss before landing a series of clotheslines. Balls then took his eye off Miz and started checking out Kelly, allowing Miz to shove him off the apron into the announce table. The ref started to apply a ten count while Balls rolled around on the floor. Balls couldn't even reach his feet, giving Miz the win. Afterward, Kelly checked on Balls, who was KO'ed. Miz then picked up the teddy bear that Balls gave to Kelly and punted it into the crowd. Well, at least it wasn't Snitsky punting a fake baby into the crowd. Balls finally came to as blood poured down his mouth. Miz celebrated while Kelly helped Balls to his feet.
WINNER: Miz via count out in 3:00. Short TV match to advance the storyline and not expose anyone in an eight minute match. And the feud must continue. (1/2*)
They aired a video package on John Morrison to remind us who he is.
[Commercial Break]
The Raw Rebound aired. Joey Styles and Tazz plugged the Cyber Sunday PPV, then they cut off Styles with a video package plugging the interactive features. They announced the three choices for who gets to face Randy Orton for the WWE Title.
John Morrison came to the ring for the main event match against Punk.
[Commercial Break]
They showed a video package on V squashing Punk at the PPV after being DQ'ed. Punk then came out with the ECW Title belt. He's doing the taped ribs gimmick.
4 -- ECW champion C.M. PUNK vs. JOHN MORRISON -- non-title match
Morrison quickly went after the ribs with kicks. He then slapped on an abdominal stretch following a cartwheel kick to the side of the head. The match spilled to the outside and Punk measured Morrison for a suplex onto the ring steps, but Morrison countered with a pancake suplex sending Punk ribs-first onto the steps.
[Commercial Break]
They returned with Morrison stretching Punk in the center ring. The fans then chanted "Hogan" for the Hogan impersonator sitting on the front row facing the hard camera. Morrison continued to work the ribs before measuring Punk for a splash, but Punk moved. Punk then hit a falling away enziguiri kick and Morrison flipped over the top rope to the floor. They battled on the apron and Punk landed a kick to the gut of his own before flipping Morrison back into the ring. Punk made his comeback and nailed the big knee in the corner before landing a running bulldog, for a nearfall only. Morrison came back with a quick kick to the head for a nearfall. They battled to the corner and Punk went for the Go 2 Sleep, but Morrison blocked and kicked Punk hard in the ribs. He followed with a leaping enziguiri, but it was good for a two count only. Punk came back with a kick, then he went up top for an apparent moonsault, but Morrison blocked him and nailed an overhead face buster from the top turnbuckle for the win. Afterward, Punk bit his fingers to block out the pain while Morrison celebrated the victory on the entrance ramp.
WINNER: Morrison in 14:00. Serviceable TV match once the heel beat down transferred into an exchange of offensive momentum leading to the finish. It's just interesting to watch a guy sell a rib injury for five minutes when there's nothing new added to the move set. (**)
