ECW TV Report
October 9, 2007
Live from Detroit, Mich.
Aired on The Sci Fi Channel
Report by Jason Combs, PWTorch.com Contributor

ECW opens with a recap of this past Sunday's ECW Title match from No Mercy. The recap lasted longer than the actual match. A graphic airs hyping tonight's main event, a non-title match between ECW World Champion C.M. Punk and the returning John Morrison.

(1) Big Daddy V (w/Matt Striker) defeats Tommy Dreamer via pinfall. Big Daddy V makes his way to the ring. Justin Roberts is back doing the ring announcing. There is a pre-recorded interview with him where he says he showed Punk no mercy, and he'll do the same tonight to Tommy Dreamer. Dreamer comes out, and Joey and Tazz talk about Dreamer wanting revenge for losing his championship shot. Of course, this "revenge" match is not conducted under extreme rules. V is dominating Dreamer, standing on him and chopping him against the ropes. Dreamer takes to the floor and V chops him against the ring apron. Back inside the ring Dreamer begins clubbing away on V with double axe handles. Dreamer's comeback is short-lived, as he is caught coming off the top and slammed down. V hits an avalanche in the corner, followed by a Samoan drop and big elbow to pick up the win.

Just another squash match, and continues to diminish Tommy Dreamer. Any momentum Dreamer may have still possessed following last week's "Elimination Chase" debacle is officially gone now.

Graphic airs showing that tonight The Miz will take on Balls Mahoney.

Recap showing the WWE Title situation from No Mercy. Forget George Reeves, Christopher Reeves, or even Dean Cain, apparently Triple H is in fact Superman.

Diva Search stuff is shown. Again I say vote for Lena because she is the only distinguishable one of the four remaining.

(2) Kevin Thorn defeats James Curtis via pinfall. Kevin Thorn is making his way out to the ring. His opponent is James Curtis, who is already in the ring. Curtis has a Mr. Kennedy-like build. Thorn pounds on him in the corner, but Curtis fights out. Curtis hits an impressive missile dropkick from the second rope. Thorn takes back over and locks in a reverse chinlock (a Tuesday night favorite). Thorn hits a running shoulder block to a seated Curtis. Thorn works over Curtis again in the corner. Thorn throws Curtis shoulder first into the ring post, twice. Curtis tries to fight back, but Thorn continues to maul him in the corner. Thorn misses an attempted splash. Curtis attempts to mount Thorn in the corner, but Thorn ducks out. Thorn goes for a crucifix bomb, but Curtis slips off his back/shoulders and crashes to the mat in a botched attempt. Thorn hits the "Original Sin" cutter with Curtis' feet draped on the top rope to pick up the win.

Video recap of the Balls-Kelly-Miz fiasco from last week.

Cut to the back and The Miz is talking to Kelly Kelly about what her deal with Balls is. He lets her know that she will be in his corner tonight for the match, and not Balls'.

ECW is back, from the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Joey sends us into yet another video package about "The Condemned". The WWE sure didn't push the DVD releases of "The Marine" or "See No Evil" as hard as this. Must be because those actually fared decently in theaters. I wish they would stop focusing time during ECW's hour every week to events that don't concern this particular brand.

(3) The Miz (w/Kelly Kelly) defeats Balls Mahoney via count-out. The Miz makes his way down the aisle, with only Kelly-Kelly accompanying him this week. Kelly has an exceptionally nice mini-skirt on this week. Tazz hypes Cyber Sunday, where every fan will be able to vote for the exact matches the WWE wants them to. Balls Mahoney comes to the ring, and Miz hits the deck. Miz is reluctant to lock up with Balls, but he lures him in and kicks him right in the gut. Balls hits a flying forearm on Miz, and takes over in the corner. Balls hits three punches in the corner, but then is dropped with a snake eyes by Miz. Miz springs off Balls' back and out to the floor slingshotting him on the middle rope on the way down. Pretty innovative. Miz locks in a wrench on the neck of Balls. Balls with a back elbow and clothesline to Miz. It's time for the Balls' punches! Kelly approves of this. Balls bodyslams Miz, but then goes to the apron. This allows Miz enough time to get up and launch Balls out face first to the announce table. The referee counts, but Balls is unable to make it back in before the 10-count.

Post-match sees The Miz punt Kelly's teddy bear into the crowd right in front of her. Kelly attends to a Balls on the floor. Balls is bloodied a little at the mouth.

Video package refamilarizes us with he who is John Morrison. It is dubbed with all of his Doors' and 1960's catch phrases.

It's time for the Raw Rebound. My feelings on this remain the same. The brand extension is almost the Raw extension, because that brand seems to cover and over-shadow the other two on a weekly basis.

A video recap of the "unpredictability" of Cyber Sunday airs. I have a feeling that if the WWE decides to drop another pay-per view next year that this may be the one that gets the axe. It was a great concept when it first debuted, but now it is too obvious that WWE is greatly influencing how the fans will vote.

(4) John Morrison defeats C.M. Punk via pinfall. John Morrison makes his return to ECW. They have kept his slow motion entrance, complete with wind machine effects. Morrison doesn't look any smaller or less cut than he did the last time we saw him. Another airing of the No Mercy ECW Title match. C.M. Punk makes his way out, and he is holding his ribs. Punk has his ribs heavily taped up. Hey, I just noticed the guy who dresses like Hulk Hogan is in the front row tonight. Hope he knows that this is 2007, not 1987. Morrison starts the match by punching Punk in his injured ribs. Morrison is concentrating on the ribs with slams and forearms. Morrison misses a break dance elbow, and Punk hits a leg lariat. Punk with the double underhook backbreaker, which gets a two-count. Morrison back to attacking the ribs. Punk catches a kick by Morrison, but Morrison spins out of it with a buzz saw enziguiri. Morrison locks in an abdominal stretch. Punk escapes with a monkey flip, and he clotheslines Morrison to the floor. Punk misses a springboard cross body, and then is dropped rib first across the steel steps. Commercial. Back, and Morrison has a modified crossbow stretch on Punk, but he does not have him elevated. During the break Morrison delivered a baseball slide right into the ribs of punk, sandwiching him in between the ring post. Morrison hits the "Break on Through" backbreaker, but Punk executes a sunset flip during Morrison's delay. Morrison back to work on the ribs. He hits that outside-in slingshot dropkick maneuver that he used in their most recent title match. The boots ended up right in Punk's ribs, which sent him to the floor. Morrison with a gut buster, which nets him a two-count. Rear chinlock applied, with Morrison positioning his knee right in the ribs of Punk. Punk tries futiley to fight out of it, but he is driven ribs first into the corner. Scott Armstrong asks Punk if he wants to continue; he does. Morrison misses a charge in the corner, and Punk sends him to the floor with a slightly botched springboard dropkick. Punk hip tosses Morrison back into the ring. Punk begins clotheslining Morrison and then scoop slams him. Punk hits a jumping leg lariat, which gets another two-count. Punk with a high knee in the corner, followed by a running bulldog. Morrison connects with a spinning enziguiri. He can only get a two-count out of that move. Morrison ascends to the top but Punk catches him and tries to hit the Go 2 Sleep. Morrison hangs on to the top rope, so Punk tosses him over the top. Morrison catches Punk with another springboard enziguiri. Can't get the three-count there. Punk fights back with a step-up enziguiri. Punk heads up to the top, but he gets caught by Morrison. Morrison hits an inverted superplex onto C.M. Punk to pick up the victory.

This was a very good television main event. Punk and Morrison have very good chemistry in the ring together. Their past two matches have easily been their best. Unfortunately, they were never able to deliver a high quality match when appearing on a pay-per view. This told an excellent story with Punk trying valiantly to overcome his rib injury, and Morrison continuing to exploit that injury in trying to gain the victory. Morrison gets a big return victory to put him back in the championship picture, while C.M. Punk gives the all-out effort despite being injured, but just can't pick up the win. This should put a lot of sympathy into the Punk character going forward.
