10/19 WWE Smackdown: Parks's Ongoing Coverage of the Show
Oct 19, 2007 - 9:00:25 PM

By Greg Parks, PWTorch Contributor

WWE Smackdown review
October 19, 2007
Taped 10/16/07 in The United Kingdom
Aired on The CW
Report by Greg Parks, Torch Team Contributor

-WWE Open.

-Smackdown Open.

-After Michael Cole and JBL welcomed viewers to the show, we got highlights of last week’s main event of Finlay vs. Rey Mysterio, as well as the aftermath. JBL then plugged his interview with Batista, which will take place later tonight.

(1) THE GREAT KHALI VS. KANE
Kane threw some punches early, but Khali just grabbed his fist to stop him and gave him a right of his own. Kane then ran into a Khali boot, then the big man applied a nerve hold. Kane got to his feet, but then fell back on his knees. Kane backed Khali into the corner and rammed some elbows into him, but Khali nailed him with a chop to the head. Khali put on the vice grip, but Kane got to the ropes. Kane came back and hit the clothesline off the top rope. He grabbed Khali for the chokeslam, but he was able to clothesline the Big Red Machine over the top rope. Khali went after Kane on the outside and grabbed some wire at ringside and choked Kane with it. When he wouldn’t break, Charles Robinson disqualified him.

WINNER: Kane by DQ at 3:43. They certainly don’t ask Khali to do much, which is a good thing.

-After the match, Khali threw Kane into the steel steps, but Kane came back and hit Khali in the head with the ring bell. As Kane went back into the ring, Big Daddy V’s music hit, and he came out with Matt Striker. Kane fought off Khali, while V grabbed him and slammed him with the Ghetto Drop.

[Break]

-Clips were shown of Big Daddy V’s assault on Kane. Backstage, Matt Striker cut a promo with V at his side. He said Smackdown fans would be able to see the most dominant force on WWE, on a regular basis.

2- CHUCK PALUMBO VS. CHRIS MASTERS
Palumbo took Masters down to start, after we saw how this feud started last week. Masters went to the outside to jaw with Michelle McCool, who accompanied Palumbo to ringside. Chuckie went over to take care of him. Back in the ring, Palumbo hit a back elbow to send Masters down. Masters turned the tide in the corner and hit some elbows of his own. Both men were very aggressive in the early on. Palumbo landed a delayed vertical suplex for two. Flying elbow by Palumbo missed, and Masters went to work on Chuck’s back. Palumbo hit some right hands, then a running clothesline. Masters ducked another one, but ran into a belly-to-belly suplex. Chuck to the top and hit a flying forearm. On the outside, Victoria attacked Michelle McCool, causing Palumbo to get distracted and rolled up by Masters for the three.

WINNER: Masters at 3:44. An okay match, but Masters is such a heat vacuum.

-Backstage, Matt Hardy was getting prepped when MVP walked in. MVP said he’s starting to dig Hardy. MVP compared them to fabulous duos of the past. He said they need to stay focused on the tag team championships. Matt said he’s actually excited for Cyber Sunday. MVP took that as a sign that Matt was focused on the team. MVP promised Matt he’d come out and watch Hardy’s match with Finlay. Matt assured him he’d be fine on his own.

[Break]

-WWE Magazine presented the Raw Rebound.

3- MATT HARDY VS. FINLAY
JBL endorsed the MMA match between Hardy and MVP at Cyber Sunday. Finlay grabbed a side headlock to begin things, then knocked Hardy down with a shoulder tackle. Finlay gave a clean break when Hardy got to the ropes, then the two started jawing. Finlay tried a single-leg take-down and succeeded. Both men went to the outside, but Finlay got in first and rammed Matt, who was on the apron, head first into the ring post. Finlay followed that up with a hard whip into the turnbuckle. A version of the half-crab was applied by Finlay, but Matt kicked out of it and the Irishman went back on the attack. Matt started hitting his signature moves, but couldn’t land the Twist of Fate. When he went to the second rope, Finlay grabbed his leg and pulled him off. While pinning Hardy, Finlay grabbed the turnbuckle pad off the corner. Referee Mickie Henson went to put it back on, so Finlay saw an opening to use his shillaleigh. Out of nowhere, MVP showed up and grabbed it away. Hardy came back to hit the Twist of Fate for the win.

WINNER: Hardy at 5:48. Surprisingly short, but a good match. You know what you’re getting with these two. And a unique finish to boot.

-The Major Brothers are in action next!

[Break]

4- DREW MCINTYRE VS. BRIAN MAJOR
Okay, I guess it’s just one Major brother. Brian grabbed a hammer-lock, but McIntyre got to the ropes. Apparently, Dave Taylor trained McIntyre. Mac worked the left arm of Major, but Brian used his quickness to get a few arm-drags, which were met with silence from the crowd. Shoulder knock-down by McIntyre. The Scot caught Brian and draped him over the top rope, throat-first. Neck-breaker by McIntyre. He applied a front chancery to wear down Brian Major. Major fought out and hit a dropkick and a few clotheslines. Taylor got on the apron and was knocked off. Brian tried to jump over the top onto him, but missed. Back in, a face-plant ended things positively for Drew McIntyre.

WINNER: McIntyre at 3:39. Nothing really wrong with the match, other than we have no reason to really care about any of these guys.

-Highlights from Undertaker/Batista at WrestleMania aired, as well as the re-match from Backlash and the May 11 Smackdown. JBL and Cole then talked about the match at Cyber Sunday. JBL went to the ring for his interview, which is next.

[Break]

-Before bringing out Batista, JBL plugged himself again for the guest referee in the Batista/Undertaker match at Cyber Sunday. JBL implored the fans to chant his name, but they just responded by yelling, “WHAT?!” Finally, Batista’s music interrupted. JBL claimed he was leading the internet voting. Batista said he’s going to tell the ref at Cyber Sunday, no matter who it is: “Stay out of my way.” JBL brought up that Batista has never beaten the Undertaker. JBL read a passage from Batista’s book, then accused the big man of being afraid of Taker. As Batista was about to exit the ring, JBL called him a coward. So of course, things got physical, and Batista speared Layfield.

-Still to come tonight, for the first time ever, MVP vs. Rey Mysterio. Man, that’d be worth saving for a PPV, I’d say. But I guess there isn’t much of that done anymore.

[Break]

-JBL was in the middle of a diatribe as we came back from break. He said he’d cost Batista the title.

-A Diva search video aired. The girls showed off their life-saving skills.

5- DEUCE ‘N DOMINO VS. JIMMY WANG YANG & SHANNON MOORE
Deuce was clearly agitated, as Domino had to settle him down. Yang aggressively went on the attack, then hit a flying bodypress over the top rope onto Domino on the outside. Moore hit one from the apron as well. Some nice team-work from the cruiserweights. Moore got a quick one count on a pin attempt. Domino fought back with a sidewalk slam, then tagged Deuce. Deuce stuck his knee right in the back of Moore’s neck and pulled up on his head. Moore rolled through a clothesline attempt and Yang tagged in. Pair of clotheslines by Yang, then a kick to the back of the head. Yang is just so smooth in everything he does. Moore took Domino out, but Deuce recovered and went after Yang. He missed a charge though and Yang hit a moonsault for ANOTHER upset.

WINNERS: Yang & Moore at 2:53. Fun, energetic tag match.

-Backstage, Vicki Guerrero was calling in flowers for Teddy Long. Jamie Noble came in, looking a bit haggard. He complained about having to face Khali last week. He assumed he did or said something to upset Vicki. He came in to apologize, but ended up calling Vicki’s decision “irrational.” Noble said he wants to help Vicki with anything. Vicki said she wants to put him in a match tonight. He said he wasn’t physically ready....but he’ll have to face Undertaker anyway. Noble couldn’t understand what he did to Vicki.

[Break]

6- UNDERTAKER VS. JAMIE NOBLE
Noble got some kicks on Undertaker in the corner, then went to the middle rope for some punches and got pushed off. Noble went back after Taker but ran right into a chokeslam. Taker gave the high sign for the Tombstone, then hit his finisher. Thanks for coming out, Jamie.

WINNER: Undertaker at 1:14.

-Still to come, Rey Mysterio takes on MVP.

[Break]

-Cole and JBL ran down the Cyber Sunday lineup.

-MVP came out for his match against Rey Mysterio. It’s on deck after the break.

[Break]

7- MVP VS. REY MYSTERIO
A lock-up led to a clean break, assisted by referee Jimmy Korderas. The two worked a quick pace to start and Rey got a one-count on a pin attempt. He went for the 619 early, but MVP rolled out of the way, and hit a face-buster. Into the ropes, Rey held on and low-bridged a charging Montel Vontavious Porter. Rey hit a cross-body off the top onto MVP on the outside. Rey pushed MVP back onto the apron. MVP got Rey on his shoulders and lifted him over his head and dumped him into the ring. MVP nailed Rey with a running boot, which sent Rey back outside the ring for our standard break.

[Break]

Back from break, MVP was working the right arm of Mysterio. Rey battled out but ran into an overhead throw by MVP. Rey came back and got uses his speed to his advantage. Tilt-a-whirl rock bottom by MVP for a two-count, as MVP would not stay down. MVP tried another kick and missed. Rey smelled blood and hit the 619. Rey tried to Drop the Dime but MVP dodged it and hit another running kick. MVP went for the Playmaker, but Finlay grabbed his foot and pulled him out of the ring for the DQ. Rey then came out after Finlay, and Finlay hit him with a short-arm clothesline. In the ring, Rey hit a head-scissor take-over and Finlay rolled out of the ring.

WINNER: MVP by DQ at 9:20.
