10/9 WWE ECW Hitlist: Main Event, Filler Oct 11, 2007 - 11:35:16 AM
Main Event: Not surprisingly, CM Punk vs. John Morrison was a good t.v. Main Event. It told a nice story as Morrison focused on Punk’s injured rips. It also had a good amount of action. Unfortunately, any time a heel works on a body part, the match tends to get repetitive and boring. The protracted beating Morrison gave Punk’s ribs did get a bit tedious, but it wasn’t too bad. In fact, some of the abdominal stretch type moves he used were much better than seeing a traditional headlock. Punk did a great job of selling the injury, and both guys hit some amazing moves, especially the various leaping kicks. The end of the match was particularly strong, and that crazy face buster from the top turnbuckle looked brutal! It was a good match, but unfortunately, due to the total lack of roster depth, it is a match that we’ve seen too many times already. I’m throwing my support behind The Miz to face Punk at Cyber Sunday as Big Daddy V would be terrible, and we’ve seen Punk vs. Morrison enough (and since Morrsion got the pin, we will see more of it for sure even if they don’t face at Cyber Sunday).
ECW MISSES
Kevin Thorn vs. Jobber: This was an ugly and boring match. Thorn is decent in the ring, but we’ve seen him squash so many jobbers before (plus roster members like Nunzio). It doesn’t mean anything anymore. Plus it was sloppy and Thorn looked like he was going to kill his opponent with that botched move. I’m not even sure what he was going for, but it looked terrible. Right now, Thorn has no storyline or feud going. So, there is little reason to have him on under these circumstances. Give him a storyline and let his character develop. We don’t need to see more of the same.
Too Much Filler: Speaking of more of the same, ECW gave us more of the same in more than one way. We got more of the same in terms of Punk vs. Morrison, a Big Daddy V squash match, Thorn vs. a jobber, the Miz vs. Balls Mahoney feud. They continued that feud, and re-sparked the Morrison vs. Punk feud, but didn’t accomplish anything else in the hour the show lasted. Everything else felt like filler. They had a recap of Punk vs. Big Daddy V. They had a recap of what happened between Balls, Kelly Kelly and Miz last week. They had a “The Condemned” dvd video. They had a Raw Rebound. They had the same Cyber Sunday preview we saw on Raw. The majority of ECW is time filler, which does not inspire people to tune in.
