1/8 WWE ECW Hitlist: 15 Minutes of Fame, Dance Off, Main Event Jan 11, 2008 - 4:54:28 PM
15 Minutes of Fame: This match is a marginal Hit. Early on, my wife asked what happened if the match ended in a tie? I told her that there was precedent for both sudden death over time, or a draw, but I didn’t know which they would do. That is one of my complaints about the match. They never addressed ahead of time what would happen in case of a tie. My guess is that WWE didn’t want to mention that possibility, because they wanted the tie to be a surprise. But, that made the announcers look stupid for not seeming to know the rules, as they kept saying that Miz & Morrison should try to score a pin to win the match, as opposed to just stalling to keep it a tie. My other complaint about the match were the sloppy spots, particularly the end when Miz had to move at the last minute to get hit by Jimmy Wang Yang’s moonsault. That looked bad. That is a lot of negative for a match that I am giving a Hit, but there was a lot of good action. The match obviously went 15 minutes which was good. It had a very memorable spot when Yang monkey flipped John Morrison into a front flip. Everyone brought a lot of energy to the match. There were some nice nearfalls throughout the match for both teams. Yang and Moore did a good job towards the end of selling their desperation to get that go ahead fall. So while I did have problems with the match, it was still enjoyable enough to give a slight Hit.
Colin Delaney: I continue to enjoy Colin Delaney’s presence on ECW. He plays his part to perfection. Saying that he was not able to keep the match vs. Bid Daddy V as close as he wanted was a great line. It would have been the line of the interview except for the fact that when asked how he felt, Delaney answered, “it pretty much hurts everywhere.” That was hilarious. I don’t know why WWE chose this guy to play this role, but he has something in him that helps sell this story.
Main Event: Chavo Guerrero vs. CM Punk 2 was a good Main Event with a lame ending. This match also went about 15 minutes, and had good back and forth action. Neither guy seemed to control the match for too long of a period, so the crowd never got restless having to see Punk sell for an extended period of time. Guerrero and Punk seem to work well together in the ring. Presumably, the lame DQ finish (a disqualification for just bringing the belt into the ring?) will allow Chavo to get a third chance next week. I don’t mind seeing more of this match-up as their first two matches have been good, but they need to have a better reason for giving Chavo another chance. How about he attacks Punk to get Punk mad, so Punk demands another match against him? That would get more heat on Chavo, and be more logical.
ECW MISSES
Dance Off: Back in the day, whenever Extreme Expose had a “dance” performance on ECW, the show came to a screeching halt. Kelly Kelly and Layla’s dance off gave me bad flashbacks to those days. None of these women can really dance. Lena Yada is bad on the mic. She had only made one previous appearance, and they are already turning her heel from an interviewer on Smackdown, to a jerk conceited Diva on ECW. That turn was TNA worthy. Top to bottom, this was a terrible segment.
Lame Explanation: I already implied this Miss in my Hit for the Main Event when talking about a better reason to have Chavo Guerrero get another chance against CM Punk. Last week, he had a match vs. Punk and if he won, he would get an ECW Heavyweight Title match in the future. He lost the match. When I heard that he was getting a second chance, I said to myself, “they better have a good reason why he is getting this second chance.” They did not. The only reason given was that last week’s match was close, so Chavo was getting another. Since when does close count? He had to win to get a Title shot, and he lost. Just because the match was close does not mean that he should get another. That was lame. The fact that this week’s match was close better not be the only reason that he gets a third opportunity.
