SMACKDOWN HITS
Punk vs. Morrison: Smackdown featured some good wrestling action this week. Even the Over the top Challenge was solid and the Batista squash over Snitsky served a purpose. The good wrestling started with Punk vs. Morrison. We’ve seen these two wrestle over the ECW Championship numerous times. Unfortunately, I don’t recall most of their matches being this good. They really worked well together here and put on a fun match. It had good back and forth action. It went over 13 minutes and had some very exciting spots, particularly the top rope hurricanrana. Is it wrong of me to hope to see that from the top of a ladder at WrestleMania? This was the start of the good in ring action for Smackdown, and also the start of some good hype for Money in the Bank.
6 Man Tag: Jesse & Festus and Kofi Kingston vs. Cade & Murdoch and the Miz was a fun 6 man tag match. Part of the fun was hearing the fans’ reactions. They were certainly into the action here, and in fact were hot all night. They have really gotten behind Festus, and are starting to get behind Kingston as well. This sounded like the best he has been received by the audience yet. He brings the fun and the fans are starting to respond. The actual wrestling was very basic and predictable. Nothing stood out and nothing will be remembered. It wasn’t an important match. But, it was enjoyable.
MVP vs. Y2J: This was another good match that I had been looking forward to since last week. It suffered from the lame DQ finish (seriously, the referee called for the bell way too early), but it still was a good match that also went over 13 minutes. It did not disappoint as it also featured very good back and forth action. This would be a great feud down the line. They proved that they can entertain while verbally sparring last week, and this week they proved that they can entertain while physically sparring as well. I would have liked to see MVP actually get a win over Chris Jericho, even after some cheating. He has looked strong in his matches against Batista, and is my pick to win Money in the Bank. If he is going to win, he needed a win over someone of Jericho’s stature to justify that win.
Final Segment: This is a marginal Hit for me. WWE has done this type of funeral for Undertaker many times before, so there wasn’t anything special about it. It was very predictable that Undertaker would be in the casket. Seriously, who didn’t see that coming? Edge’s promo was solid, but not great. However, I really liked the video package that Vickie Guerrero and the Edge Heads put together, portraying Edge as the hero and Undertaker as the villain. That was really well done, as was the earlier video hyping their history which I’m sure we will see again on Sunday. It was also fun to see Undertaker beating up Edge and his buddies. Vickie Guerrero was pretty good in her frightened scream and run away from the ring. I am curious to see how long she will be out of the wheel chair before someone feuding with Edge puts her back in again. This wasn’t great, but it was good.
SMACKDOWN MISSES
Water Fight: WWE did a good job of hyping WrestleMania with their final show before the biggest PPV of the year. There was one moment when they took a break from the hype and threw out something that didn’t belong. That moment was the Wet ‘n Wild Water fight which should be the final step in this silly Divas Contest to win a motorcycle or whatever. I do have to say that I am glad to see Cherry as one of the final two and would love to see her win the whole thing. But, I won’t go as far as to actually vote. This was mainly just a waste of time. Yes, there are plenty of guys out there who like to see this stuff, but I still contend that there are plenty of places to get that type of tna and many fewer places to get the type of wrestling action we got to see in the matches listed above. Also, there are sexy women who can wrestle. They look good and they can put on a show in the ring other than just dumping water on each other.
