UNDER THE MICROSCOPE - 10/14 RAW: What I noticed that you might have missed

By Lee Stevens, PWTorch Specialist

Before we go Under The Microscope at our Columbus Day Party, I need to address old business from last week. I referred to a sign at ringside stating "Hold #425-Armbar" and claimed that it must refer to Dean Malenko, who was commonly known as "The Man of 1,000 Holds." Technically, I was correct...but barely. That would be like getting asked a question in American History class, "Who was George Washington?" and you answer "A human." Technically, you are correct, but you're probably not getting credit for it.

Thanks to several people who reminded me of the actual source of the reference. Malenko was feuding with a long-haired gentleman named Chris Jericho in WCW. Jericho took Malenko's title of "The Man of 1,000 Holds" and went 4 better. He stood in the middle of the ring after a particular quick win against Marty Janetty (ironically, the long-time partner of Shawn Michaels, who Jericho is feuding with now) and unrolled a long piece of paper which listed his 1,004 holds. Most of which happened to be "arm bar." Kudos to the person holding the sign last week and everyone who reminded me of this. It was a very entertaining feud and I also remember Jericho bringing in a cardboard cutout of Malenko to the ring, claiming a conspiracy which went up the corporate ladder all the way to then President Bill Clinton and many twists and turns with Malenko, Juventud Guerrera and even Lenny Lane.

Idiot Of The Week: Me

Blame it on Columbus Day fever. Seriously, nice work everyone. Thanks for taking the time to write!

Let's look a bit closer at Raw. As always, don't look too closely. Don't look directly at it during an eclipse and don't look behind you.

THESE KIDS AND THEIR CELL PHONES

Mike Adamle and Chris Jericho still have issues about the stipulations at Cyber Sunday. Jericho wisely wants to take it up with Shane McMahon, but Adamle insists that Shane and Stephanie McMahon have their cell phones turned off during the show. This must be a new habit, as Shane has frequently been seen on his cell, including memorable chats with his father. If you remember, most of the McMahon's use their entrance music as their ring tones. Then again, if you had entrance music you would probably do the same thing.

BEFORE I DESTROY YOU, DO I MAKE YOU SHIVER?

Shawn Michaels is another source of Jericho's grief and continuing our look at entrance music, this is a great chance to take a closer look at Shawn's tune. This is a man who has a rage most men will never feel. The man he is facing in the ring has threatened his career, his health and most importantly his family. This is his sworn enemy. This other man has even struck his wife in front of the entire world. Revenge must be had. Cue the music.

I think I'm cute, I know I'm sexy. I got the looks that drive the girls wild.
I got the moves, that really move 'em. I'll set you up. I send chills up and down your spine

I'm just a sexy boy (Sexy Boy). I'm not your boy toy (Boy Toy)
I'm just a sexy boy (Sexy Boy). I'm not your boy toy (Boy Toy)

I make 'em hot, I make 'em shiver. Their knees get weak and their eyes go round
They see me walk, they hear me talk
I make 'em feel like they're on cloud nine.

I understand this is part of history and he still goes by the name Heartbreak Kid, but if your entrance music sets the tone, this is setting the wrong tone. This doesn't say "I'm going to beat you up." This says "I'm going to beat you up...provided that you agree that you won't strike me in the face, because that's my money maker. Seriously, the girls think I'm dreamy."

OKAY, I'LL JUST CATCH UP WITH YOU LATER

Did you notice after Michaels hit Jericho and the champ scrambled out of the ring, Michaels started to lunge for him through the ropes? This is the same move which injured Michaels just before "Unforgiven." Originally, it was feared that the triceps injury would keep him from the PPV match, but he was cleared for takeoff. It seemed that at the last minute, Michaels experienced a bit of deja vu and held back from jumping through the ropes to get at Jericho. Good restraint by Michaels.

TRAIN, SAY YOUR PRAYERS AND EAT YOUR VITAMINS

I'll admit that I thought Hulk Hogan might come out to confront JBL when his "Real American" music hit as his reality show "Celebrity Championship Wrestling" will make its debut next weekend on CMT (look for a recap on PWTorch.com) and I thought this would be a fine time to promote the show. Instead we get Charlie Haas as "Haas Hogan." Haas continues to do a solid job with a weak gimmick and I can only speculate as to who is next. Stone Cold Steve Haas-tin could tie in to Cyber Sunday. The Million Dollar Man Ted DiBi-Haas-e could prompt a beat down by The Second Generation. I think deceased wrestlers should be given respect, but since he already imitated Curt Henning, does The Big Haas Man seem that ridiculous? You're about to serve hard time with the man from Cobb County.

I WAS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Hello to Nancy O'Dell from "Access Hollywood," who was in the audience at Anaheim. She's not only connected to wrestling by having a ticket to the show, she shares a birthday (February 25) with Ric Flair, although "The Nature Boy" has enjoyed a few more of them than Nancy.

Johnny Knoxville also has a seat in the house tonight. His JackassWorld is his attempt to continue the legacy of "Jackass," the show that aired from 2000-2002 and spawned two movies. A third movie will be revealed in 2009. This isn't the first time we've seen part of Knoxvile's crew on WWE television. Steve-O and Chris Pontius were kind enough to be destroyed by Umaga last year. Knoxville comes into play several times tonight, even meeting The Glamazon and Santino Marella in the middle of the ring. I'm not sure who is responsible for the worst wrestling move this year, but upon closer look, it's another example of what can go wrong when celebrities are brought into the ring with professionals.

For the record, everyone at Under The Microscope can not be held responsible if you take a closer look at the middle of the segment featuring two men stripped down to G-strings. Look closer at your own risk.

"HEY, I KNOW YOU!"

If you look closely (and if you're reading this, I'm sure you do) at the Hell in the Cell DVD, you will see the usual suspects, including the new TNA mainstay Mick Foley. He is featured in brief clips, although not mentioned by name.

In the Cyber Sunday recap for the Intercontinental choices, we see classic clips from The Honkytonk Man, including HTM drilling Randy Savage and Bret Hart with his guitar. This could be a coincidence, but both left under less than friendly terms. Also, seeing Honkytonk Man dancing with "Peggy Sue" and remembering his long title reign, Deuce and Domino weren't terrible---they were just two decades late.

If Goldust wins the voting and competes at Cyber Sunday, does the WWE resist the temptation to have him pass Cody Rhodes in the locker room area and simply say "see you at Thanksgiving"?

MONEY, MONEY, QUACK, QUACK

The duck mask as a weapon is rather new, but not totally implausible in Anaheim as the NHL's Ducks call this arena home. The WWE can appreciate this level of cross promotion. When Anaheim got an expansion franchise, the team was owned by Disney and coming off the success of their movie "The Mighty Ducks," the team nickname was obvious. The team has since been sold and the name shortened to simply The Ducks. There were actually three movies in the series plus an animated show. All were mighty.

Lee Stevens is not a celebrity, but he remembers Mr. T fighting Mr. Wonderful, he remembers wondering why Courtney Cox's husband carried the WCW title and remembers wondering why the WWE is fascinated with Jackass when it stopped being popular six years ago.
