SMACKDOWN HITS
Colons vs. Miz & Morrison: This was a good 12 minute tag match. Primo has shown a lot of high flying ability. Carlito continues to show why he has deserved a push. Miz & Morrison continue to be Miz & Morrison. I like this feud despite hating last week's double date debacle. I don't understand why Vickie Guerrero would allow her brand's Tag Team Titles to be defended against a team from ECW as it is one more example of her being an incompetent General Manager (calling into question the sanity of the board of directors). That being said, I enjoyed this match. The Colons got in so much offense early, I was thinking they were going to lose. I'm glad they won, as it should keep the feud going, and that would be good. They should get a shot at Miz & Morrison's Tag Titles now. If they can keep this feud going, with some singles matches and what not (perhaps Miz & Morrison can cost either Carlito or Primo a MIB qualifier at some point), they could do a really good 2 out of 3 falls match at WrestleMania to unify the Titles. They might as well have only one team as Champs who compete against teams from all three brands, considering the lack of a brand split and the lack of tag teams on each show.
Kozlov vs. Undertaker: This was a better than expected match with the right ending (considering the circumstances) so I am giving it a Hit, a marginal Hit, but a Hit nonetheless. This was one of Vladimir Kozlov's better matches, which isn't necessarily saying much. It had some sloppy spots. Undertaker should stop trying to do snake eyes on Kozlov, as it always looks bad. But, there was still plenty of good wrestling action. The match went 12 minutes, but didn't drag as it could have. Most people believe Shawn Michaels will defeat Kozlov on Raw to face Undertaker at WrestleMania (please!). But if he loses, Kozlov's win here sets up Undertaker's streak as being vulnerable. Even in Michaels wins (please!) this still sets up a future feud between these two and if Michaels defeats the undefeated Kozlov who just defeated Undertaker, then that adds some doubt for the streak as well.
Hardy Non Match: While I am never a fan of a bait-and-switch, this was the right move. Plus, I never expected the match to happen, so I am fine with it. Also, both Matt and Jeff Hardy were very good on the mic. It is a bit of a role reversal. Usually, we see the babyface wanting a match, while the heel refuses. This is unusual in that it is the heel who wants the match and the babyface who is refusing. I like the change. It reminds me of some other past brother vs. brother feuds when the babyface brother didn't want to wrestle his heel brother (Bret vs. Owen Hart, or Undertaker vs. Kane). The fans already want to see Jeff get his hands on Matt, but they really gave a positive response when he said no. It is a fine line to walk as the fans do want to see the match, and you don't want to see them upset at Jeff for not fighting. So far so good. I look forward to seeing how they ultimately build this to their match.
Cena vs. Big Show: During the commercial break that came 8 minutes into this 20 minute match, I wasn't expecting to give the match a Hit. Those 8 minutes were pretty slow, and I figured there would be some Edge interference shortly after the commercial leading to a non-finish. Instead, there was about 9 more minutes of action, which was much better than the first half. I can't say this was a great match, but the second half was very strong, making up for the first half. The pace quickened. There were some really nice counters. John Cena got in more offense, while Big Show kept delaying his come backs. These two work well together. The match would have been better suited to only go 10 minutes. That way they wouldn't have had to pace themselves for so long. Show probably shouldn't be in 20 minute one on one matches at this point. But as I said, I did like the second half. Also, I was happy that Show got a relatively clean win. Sure, Edge distracted Cena, but he didn't get physically involved. It was a right hand and a chokeslam that defeated Cena. Also, this adds more fuel to the fire between Edge and Cena.
SMACKDOWN MISSES
Matt's Old Music: I like Matt Hardy's old music, but it has been so identified with his babyface persona, that it should have been changed. It worked well when he was a heel before as it fit in with that heel character. But, this heel character is different. He is going darker than before and the upbeat music doesn't fit.
No MIB Qualifier: Last year, I complained about the same thing on the same weekend. The February 29th Smackdown did not have a Money in the Bank qualifier. Unlike this week, that was not the first week of qualifying matches. In fact, by that point there had already been four qualifying matches. The problem then was that three of the four were on Raw, and only one on Smackdown. That made little sense last year. This year I am worried that we are heading for the same thing. There was a qualifying match on Raw (with more deserving opponents than most who were in the very predictable qualifiers last year), but not on Smackdown. I hope they will balance them out better, and maybe even give one or two to ECW.
