GARDNER'S KEY MOMENT OF THE WEEK: Analyzing final push to WrestleMania 25

By Richard Gardner, Torch specialist

On WWE Raw this past week, a lackluster build for WrestleMania culminated in the return of Vince and Shane McMahon, who united with Triple H to brawl with the three members of The Legacy. It was a hot angle, and a strong way to go off air, but as Ed Ferrara pointed out in his Torch Talk earlier in the week there was no final push from the announcers to remind viewers to purchase the Pay-Per-View.

It feels as though the WWE has undersold their biggest show of the year, and as a result there must be several potential buyers who are yet to decide whether they will order it. Other factors will also play a part in the number of buys that the WWE eventually gets, as its not easy justifying $54.95 on a single PPV in an economic downturn. With a lack of big celebrity appearances, Vince Mc Mahon apparently feels that the PPV will sell itself on the brand alone.

Notwithstanding deficiencies with the WWE product, there are still many reasons to order WrestleMania. Much has been said about the quality of the card, but this is not going to be a fiasco of WrestleMania 9 proportions. Far from it.

There is a potential match of the year in Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker. The dynamic between the two veterans has made for fantastic encounters, most notably their famous Hell in the Cell match in 1997, and more recently their interaction at the end of the 2007 Royal Rumble match. While their feud could have benefited from starting a couple of weeks earlier, it has the feeling of a historically important match. This match is the best reason for ordering the PPV.

The three-way match for the World title has been tarnished by one of the worst builds for a major title match in recent history. The silliness of Edge and The Big Show fighting over Vickie Guerrero has not benefited anyone, particularly John Cena who was pinned by The Big Show on Raw this week. Yet the three of them are more than capable of putting together an excellent match on the big stage. Edge has evolved into one of the most important members of the WWE roster, and will produce when the pressure is on.

Another match that has suffered from a poor build is the WWE title match. The ridiculous sight of Triple H rampaging through Randy Orton's house with a sledgehammer may be the lasting memory of the road to WrestleMania 25, but this is another match that promises to deliver. Although Orton and Triple H have fought many times before, Randy Orton has improved immeasurably since returning from his collarbone injury at the end of last year making this another potentially great match.

The last time Matt and Jeff Hardy wrestled each other the results were so disappointing that the two of them were taken off TV for a month, their feud completely abandoned. This will not happen again. The Hardy's have a wealth of experience to draw upon that they did not have in 2001, and will work hard to make sure that they do not disappoint. Their extreme rules match has the potential to steal the show if it is given adequate time to do so.

There are other matches on the card that will be worth watching, including the tag team title match and the Money in the Bank ladder match.

Although some may find the line-up uninspiring, WrestleMania 25 promises to be an excellent event in terms of match quality. In fact, it may be the best PPV WWE puts on this year.
