As the resident Smackdown "expert" here on the Torch, I'll be presenting my opinions throughout the night during this three-hour Raw on how the draft will effect the Smackdown brand, both when wrestlers are drafted to and from the show. So stick around and check in often!
First Pick: MVP to Raw- He was really floundering on Smackdown, though he did have a little feud going on with Shelton Benjamin over the U.S. Title. Once he won it, there wasn't much for him to do, and WWE never fully got behind him after his losing streak was broken. He's been on Smackdown his entire career so this move should mean more for Raw than others might. He has some good opponents on Raw to work with, including CM Punk and William Regal. Smackdown usually had one or two matches per show go 10 minutes and MVP, especially during his run with Matt Hardy, often was one of the men in them, so Smackdown may have to get someone who can go 10-15 minutes on TV.
Second Pick: Big Show to Raw- And Smackdown loses their first main eventer. His character was in a weird place for much of the year on Smackdown, then got more focused as he horned in on the Vickie/Edge relationship. As the World Title feud focuses on Cena and Edge heading into Backlash, that leaves the third member of the WM title match without much to do on Friday nights. A move to Raw should hopefully freshen up his character and it also keeps him on the same show as Vickie, so we may not have seen the end of that.
Third Pick: Melina to Smackdown- Now both women's titles are on Friday nights. What this means I'm not sure, but it gives them an automatic feud with Melina and Maryse. Hopefully it's not a sign they gave up on Gail Kim already, as I expected her to be the top face on Smackdown to challenge for the Divas Title. The face side had only one real worker on Smackdown, Kim, while the heels had two decent ones in McCool and Kim, so this may even the sides up a bit as well. I would've preferred Mickie get sent to Smackdown, since I don't think the Raw writers have used her to her potential.
Fourth Pick: Matt Hardy to Raw- Hardy just recently came over from ECW, so he's been embroiled in the feud with his brother Jeff for the most part. That feud isn't over, even with Matt's win in the Stretcher Match on Friday, so it may be revisited at some point. Jeff does come off looking a little weak, having lost two to his brother and presumably, with Matt now on Raw, not getting at least one win back. Like MVP, Hardy was often involved in longer Smackdown matches as well. Matt is a great role player and not a big threat to the main event, so he should do well on Raw.
Fifth Pick: Triple H to Raw- Along with "Rey to Smackdown," this was probably the most predicted move by fans and it has come true. The biggest star (and likely biggest ego) is now back on the biggest show. He never really seemed to fit in on Smackdown for whatever reason. They really didn't explore the Edge vs. Triple H feud on Friday nights as much as I had hoped. This makes Orton more easily accessible for Hunter though. Plus he can work with Batista as a heel or face, as one of them is expected to turn down the line (Batista most likely, I'd guess).
Sixth Pick: CM Punk to Smackdown- Punk, one of the few to have been on all three brands now, and his MITB briefcase travel to Smackdown. It'll be tough for him to cash it in, as of right now, with no top champion on the show. Still, I'm excited about the prospects of him moving to Smackdown and matching up with some new superstars. It'll also bring the excitement of the briefcase as well. With all the big names moving to Raw, he would've been lost in the shuffle, and ideally, you want the man with the title shot relatively front-and-center. He could even shoot up to the main event on Smackdown, depending on how things pan out in the next 48 hours.
Seventh Pick: Not Smackdown related with Miz going from ECW to Raw.
Eighth Pick: Kane to Smackdown- All personal biases aside (I'm really not a Kane fan), the Big Red Machine will help pad the upper card on Smackdown. I'm sure we'll get a feud with Great Khali so we can get that out of the way early on. Plus, Undertaker is still on the brand, and he and Kane can always re-ignite their past. Just keep him away from the title picture, OK? For me?
Ninth Pick: Chris Jericho to Smackdown- Now this is one I can get excited about. Jericho's feud with the legends now over, it's time for something new. Perhaps he can energize Smackdown the same way he did with Raw last year during his feud with HBK. He'll bring some great interviews and match quality to Smackdown and should have a good dynamic with Edge, whether they're on the same side or apart. Lots of ways they could go with this one.
Tenth Pick: Vladimir Kozlov to ECW- Kozlov made a much ballyhooed debut and ran through competition 'til he hit that rookie wall. Since his match with Triple H at Survivor Series, he's pretty much been a non-factor. He can be a big fish in a small pond in ECW and return to tossing around guys like Ricky Ortiz. He had really fallen off the map on Smackdown, so he won't be a big deal to replace. Once he finds his footing again (if he does, rather), I'm sure he'll be back on one of the top brands soon enough.
Eleventh Pick: Maryse to Raw- Well, this makes the Melina pick clearer. Maryse really developed from a model who couldn't wrestler into a model who could......well, be carried to a good match. She also developed a solid heel persona on Smackdown and was rewarded with the Divas Championship. It should be fun to see her interact with some of the Raw Divas now. I like this pick to Raw better than Melina to Smackdown. I feel like the Smackdown Divas need an infusion of personality.
Twelfth Pick: Rey Mysterio to Smackdown- Rey returns home with the IC Title now on Friday nights. That should improve the in-ring quality on the show and it's where Rey has had most of his success in WWE. WWE also hopes he can bring the Hispanic audience back to the show like he did when he was originally on when they aired on the CW. Mysterio's another guy they could plug into the main event if injuries occur, but he'll probably settle in the upper mid-card.
