IMPACT HITS

Team 3D Invitational Tournament: I've been a fan of tag team wrestling for years, and if TNA is going to give some focus on their tag team division (unlike WWE, who seems to want to just break up and bury all their tag teams), then I'm all for it. And the tournament setup gave us one of the other hits tonight.

Beer Money, Inc. vs. Lethal Consequences: Beer Money has really come on to me lately as a tag team. I'll be the first to admit I didn't buy into them at first, but they are using more double team moves and have fantastic heel heat. Roode kicking out of the Lethal Combination showed how strong Beer Money has gotten. Now will someone PLEASE tell Jay Lethal that the Randy Savage gimmick is over and done with?

A.J. Styles vs. Kevin Nash: First of all, let me state that I absolutely HATE the existence of the Legends belt as now a legitimate title. Styles doesn't need to have a bogus belt around his waist to convince me that he's one of the best wrestlers TNA has to offer. You just don't pull off a springboard 450 splash without having being that damned good. I hated the DQ finish, but any time that Styles can make someone like Nash look good, you get a Hit in my book.

Christopher Daniels interview: I am so glad to see him back in TNA, and not as Curry Man or Suicide. This man is one of the better technical wrestlers in the business today, and his story about his time "away" from TNA made sense. Daniels looks hungry, and if he can actually bring some legitimacy to the X-Division again, more power to him.

IMPACT MISSES

Opening Segment: It was nice to see an episode of Impact not open with the Mafia involved. And as nice as it was to see Foley get his cheers for winning the championship, I was still confused as to which side both Jarrett and Foley were on by the time the segment was done. TNA has done a very poor job of defining who is the face and who is the heel in this storyline. Foley appears to be trying to be trying to show some heel tendencies with a little bit of cockiness in his acceptance speech and with his setup of the match later between Jarrett and Steiner, and Jarrett still didn't come clean with his support of the young guys who he was originally trying to push until he had his little temper tantrum backstage later that night. Until TNA gets some clear lines here as to who we're supposed to support, this confusion will land this in the Miss column.

Mick Foley film clip segments: All this did for me was make Foley look like a doofus. I don't need to see Foley sending his kids off to school with the belt over the shoulder, or going out to dinner with fans, or getting a massage from a blind woman. In fact, what I want to see is an actual champion who can wrestle a full schedule. I hate to say this, but Foley as champion is going to go nowhere fast.

Sojourner Bolt vs. Taylor Wilde: Ugh. First of all, we get a ladder match with absolutely no build-up other than one little mention earlier in the show (which TNA blew by putting the wrong graphic up), and then Sojourner Bolt wins again? Does anyone else not remember how badly Bolt stunk up the place during her last shot at the title? At least Wilde has some bit of wrestling skills, which isn't saying much considering just how weak the Knockouts division is in TNA.

Beautiful People celebration: I wanted this to be a Hit. Really I did. Angelina Love has earned her run as Knockouts Champion by busting her ass this past year. And she delivered an awesome heel promo to get things started. But the celebration was just so lame. Male strippers? Come on. That's the best they can come up with? And did anyone else not see the Kong run-in coming about five miles off? I guess Kong is officially starting her face run now.

Dr. Stevie, Lauren, and Abyss: For the past few weeks, Lauren was somewhat of the voice of reason in this storyline. And she comes out and asks intelligent questions, and then in the end suddenly buys Dr. Stevie's excuses for abusing Abyss? Someone please bring back the Abyss who was just a bad-ass, who never talked, who just walked through everyone in the ring. This Abyss is a wuss, and Lauren agreeing to help Dr. Stevie makes no sense at all.

Jeff Jarrett vs. Scott Steiner: Just a so-so match, with no real consistency to it. And I have no idea what Jarrett was doing selling a shot from an inflatable blow-up doll like he had been smacked by a chair. Then, after everything was all said and done, Foley saves Jarrett from the MEM beatdown, only to do the work himself. And Jarrett promises payback by firing his champion? This makes sense how?

Mike Tenay and Don West: Do I even need a reason to list them in the Miss column?

Overall Show: Only a few highlights this week. This week's show got off to a good start, and had a couple of decent matches, but people are just sick of Foley and Jarrett already, and all we got was a two-hour dose of their saga.

Chris Reed is a new PWTorch Specialist covering TNA Impact with a weekly Hits & Misses column, replacing John Mezzera who is shifting his Thursday duties to the new WWE Superstars program instead.
