SUPERSTARS HITS
Cena Promo: This was one of John Cena's better promos. He didn't yell or get overly excited. His understated serious tone worked very well. It was nice to hear him cut a serious promo without the silly humor for a change. He did a nice job of placing his feud against Edge into perspective and what this match means in the context of that feud. The Red Sox vs. Yankees analogy was interesting. I hope after that speech that this will indeed be the end of the feud. They have had some very good matches and moments against each other, and I wouldn't mind seeing them feud again down the line, but not for awhile. Let the brand split fully happen after Backlash. Keep them apart. The promo made me want to see the match more, so mission accomplished.
Edge vs. Kingston: This was a very good main event. We saw Edge and Kofi Kingston have a good match awhile back on Smackdown and this one was even better. Kingston looked very good and got plenty of offense against Edge despite taking the loss. This was smart booking as Edge needed to win, but he was able to elevate Kingston in the process. These two worked hard and put on a good 13 minute match with plenty of high energy offense. I enjoyed the announcing team of Jim Ross and Todd Grisham more in this match that I have in their first few weeks as a team on Smackdown. They worked well together. They did a nice job of analyzing the match, and putting it into context with Edge's PPV match on Sunday.
SUPERSTARS MISSES
Treatment of Mysterio: CM Punk & Rey Mysterio vs. The Big Show & Kane was a decent 10 minute tag match. It wasn't good enough to get a Hit, but not bad enough to get a Miss either. The glaring problem with it was how poor Mysterio looked in the match. Yes, he got in some of his signature high flying and innovative moves. But, he spent most of the match just getting the crap beat out of him by Show and Kane. After getting destroyed by Show on Raw, it would have been nice to see the Intercontinental Champion treated with a little more respect. He should have had a better showing in this match.
"Mixed" Tag Team: There are plenty of WWE fans who probably enjoyed watching the antics of Finlay and Hornswoggle. I however and not 9 years old, and I am writing this column. Superstars could be a chance to get a bigger audience for ECW. If Raw and Smackdown fans who don't watch ECW tune in to Superstars, it is a chance to showcase some of the talent on that brand, in hopes of increasing the audience. I don't imagine that this worked. The fun and games are fine for what they are, but Tyson Kidd has some potential to be a star, and having him look like a fool isn't good for business. At one point, Natalya had to break up a pin attempt by Hornswoggle! That was ridiculous. And, as I said in my ECW Hits & Misses, I am tired of the Finlay - Hornswoggle team so I was happy at the end when they were done, which I don't think I was supposed to be.
Raw Videos: I enjoyed the first episode of Superstars better than the second, in part because last week they didn't hit us with recap videos. I understand wanting to sell Backlash, but you can do it in a better way than showing back to back videos on the two main events for the PPV. Cena's promo, along with Edge's match were enough to sell their Last Man Standing match without the video package. We all saw what happened between Legacy and Team Triple H on Raw and a replay on ECW, and we will likely see another replay on Smackdown. Did we need to see one on Superstars too?
