By Matt Demers, PWTorch Celebrity Specialist

It's only natural for the outlandish and outrageous world that is Professional Wrestling to have frequent crossovers with the equally eccentric and lurid world that is Hollywood. Today's wrestlers aren't just showing up in big screen movies, they are frequent guests on late night chat shows, releasing their own music albums. and gracing the covers of magazines not limited to the wrestling genre. And what about the other way around? Today's celebrities are making their way down the aisle and into the ring more and more frequently. Heck, WWE even has it's own "Celebrity” section of it's Hall of Fame. The two worlds fit together like peas and carrots. Peanut butter and chocolate. Mick Foley and jogging pants... or do they?

While some cross ventures between the wrestling universe and Hollywood make us happier than the first time we saw a Diva in the pages of Playboy, others leave us with the with that feeling of the first time we saw Vickie Guerrero kiss Edge - you know, that whole throw up in your mouth thing. So I thought it would be appropriate in my first column to offer up what I feel deserves to be ranked the all time best and worst wrestling/Hollywood crossovers. Trust me, there were certainly lots to choose from, but after careful deliberation (I'm talking major YouTube viewing) these are my choices:

Worst: Jay Leno teams with DDP to take on Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff at WCW Road Wild 1998

I shouldn't even need to explain myself on this one. I mean Jay Leno? Really? This makes about as much sense as having Oprah fight Awesome Kong! Not only was this insulting to the fans intelligence, but it in no way, shape, or form proved anything other than what we already knew: Jay Leno can't wrestle and this match was going to be horrible.

The Jay Leno angle at Road Wild was a classic example of the Hollywood/wrestling crossover done wrong. I mean, WCW might as well have gone on to have Bret Hart, one of the greatest wrestlers of our time, attack Will Saso during a taping of Mad TV... oh yeah, they did that, too! Bottom line, the Jay Leno stunt was cheap, insulting, and painful to watch. Kind of like his monologues!

Best: Jerry Lawler slaps Andy Kaufman on Late Night with David Letterman

Take note Leno. It was 1983 and in a lead up to Andy Kaufman's in-ring handicap match with Jerry Lawler, the two made an appearance on NBC's 12:30 .a.m program at the time, "Late Night with David Letterman" (Jimmy Fallon's show now). This was a time when wrestling was still shrouded in the "real or fake" debate and Letterman's show was nothing short of groundbreaking.

The interview was full of Kaufman clearly cutting a promo for the upcoming bout, but right before a commercial break something magical happened: Lawler slapped Kaufman right off his chair! When returning from break, Kaufman went off on a cursing fit as Lawler sat back looking badass while Letterman used the awkwardness to play for laughs. It was perfect. We were left not knowing what was going on, but all the more excited to see what would happen next. That's the way a wrestling/Hollywood crossover should be.

So there you have it. Until next time, I'm Mr Hollywood and like in the wrestling world, I'm famous cause I wanna be!

Agree or disagree with the best and worst picks? Let me know in the reader comments area below.
