IMPACT HITS

Mick Foley is Insane. That really is the only logical explanation for Foley's actions and it is brilliant in both conception and execution. I give the highest marks to both the TNA writers and Foley as an actor in lulling us along with that good ol' goofy Mick talking to his sock, then shocking the Impact Zone into stunned silence, unsure of how to react when Foley showed the DVD of his beat down of Jeff Jarrett (more later). The great thing about it is that no matter how much he chews the scenery in theater terms, he is still playing all these moments in believable fashion. I think most fans had their doubts when Foley was given the TNA Championship Belt, but if the Champion is supposed to be the biggest money draw, well, they put it on the right guy for now.

Scott Steiner is Sane. Another nice build that TNA has done is with Scott Steiner. It was good to see him as the 'acting godfather' while Kurt Angle is out making a movie, and especially good to hear Steiner talking in a normal voice. Not that I would ever want to see the F-Bomb prone Big Poppa Pump persona retired - never. But that persona when it returns will be even more effective against the backdrop of the real Scott Steiner. And he actually managed to make the incredibly lame Sharmell/Jenna story almost bearable.

Tag Teams. It's not just hype. TNA has the richest tag team line-up in recent years, possibly of all-time. Team 3D, the Guns, the British Invasion, LAX, Beer Money ... all of them are plausible champions and all of them have a clear style that contrasts with the others. Kudos to Brother Ray for sincerely putting over the division. TNA actually could pick up the Jim Ross Challenge and main event a tag team match at a Pay-per-View.

Camera work. Yes, camera work. When I first started thinking about doing a Hits and Misses column on Impact one of my main thoughts was how relatively cheesy the shows looked in comparison to the WWE product. They're fixing that. The Awesome Kong squash over Cute Kip was really well-shot and edited, particularly in the moments where Kip had his head crunched in the chair, and an excellent shot angle afterwards so that it was left to our imaginations just how mangled Kip James's cranium actually was. Similarly, the final scene: both the Jeff Jarrett beat down at the Asylum and the high and low angle shots of the completely cracked Mick Foley watching the big screen were absolutely letter perfect. For once the visuals actually enhanced the action.

Daniels and Suicide. I'm a little surprised and slightly disappointed that TNA didn't wait a few more weeks before revealing that Christopher Daniels is not (or is no longer) Suicide. But I am truly enjoying Daniels as a kick-ass character and the Suicide gimmick is actually working - which is incredible given that it started as such a completely lame gimmick.

Don West. Don West cracks me up. Oh, he lays it on a little thick when he tries to be a full-fledged heel announcer, but when he is just playing the cynic, then he's funny. My favorite line of the night - and if you didn't see the show then reading the line won't do the moment justice - was when Mike Tenay threw it to one of the Jeff Jarrett at Home clips and West exclaimed in mock horror, "You mean there's another one!?!"

IMPACT MISSES

Mike Tenay. On the other hand, sometimes I think Mike Tenay is a 13-year-old-girl disguised an ageing bald guy. Lines to Don West like: "You're such an idiot!" or "You only lie when your lips move!" Don't forget... "You just won't admit it when you're wrong!"... these are not words that should ever be spoken at any time by any adult male.

Eric Young. Two weeks ago, it looked like EY might actually be getting a bit of a push when he complained to Jeff Jarrett about being mistreated, not being given a chance to re-capture his title etc. This week, he gets squashed by Samoa Joe and tossed in a car trunk. Guess that push thing isn't really working out well. Granted, TNA needed to re-establish Joe as a monster after more or less treating him as more gullible than Elmer Fudd for the better part of a year, but did it have to be at the expense of Eric Young?

Two Sides of Jeff Jarrett. I like comedy. It's one of the reasons I watch TNA. It makes me laugh and not a helluva lot on TV does. But all comedy (and all story-telling) must have logic, no matter how absurd the situation. We went from a clip of Jeff Jarrett with his daughters - which was okay, if slightly tasting of treacle - to ... ummm ... later that night Jeff Jarrett, Father of the Year, out on a pub crawl. I'm assuming I don't have to elaborate.

Sharmell vs. Jenna. Oh this is just a stupid, stupid story. I hate it. I want it to go away. It came from nowhere and it can lead to nowhere. Seriously. Where can it go? A Sharmell vs. Jenna match? Oh Dear Lord, deliver us from that evil. I don't need a bathroom break that badly. Or if not that, are we going to see a Booker T vs. Kevin Nash match? I can't see it. In the meantime, it's half-baked comedy. Hopefully TNA gets one of those WWE-style memory lapses and the whole ugly episode is just forgotten about. The best that can be said is that it did not ruin another very good Impact.

Be seeing you.
