SUPERSTARS HITS
Mysterio vs. Benjamin: This was a very good match to start off Superstars. Rey Mysterio and Shelton Benjamin worked very hard, and despite the pain in Mysterio's knee, they delivered. Mysterio got to show off his high flying offense, while Benjamin got to show off his mat wrestling and countering ability . The match went 13 minutes and was fun to watch from start to finish. There were some very cool spots like Benjamin catching Mysterio in mid air and hitting a gut buster, or Mysterio's spinning tornado DDT counter. It is great to see Mysterio in the ring with someone like Benjamin who can wrestle and look good taking Mysterio's moves. He looked more natural falling into place for the 6-1-9 than most of Mysterio's opponents.
Henry vs. Christian: This is just about as good a match as you can expect from Mark Henry. He needs to be in the ring with a skilled opponent like Christian, and it can't be too long. This one seemed right at 10 minutes. Henry got to show off his great power, while Christian did a good job playing the underdog role. The match told a story of Christian trying to survive while Jack Swagger undoubtedly watched and rooted for him to be softened up before their ECW Title match at Judgment Day. The match built nicely, and culminated with Christian able to use his quickness to defeat Henry. I liked how Christian sold the effects of Henry's power afterwards.
SUPERSTARS MISSES
Morrison: John Morrison added nothing to the commentary during Mysterio vs. Benjamin. For all that he said, he might as well have not been there. I remember once when he and The Miz did commentary on ECW and everyone criticized them for overshadowing the wrestlers in the ring. Here, it was the exact opposite. This has to do with the fact that Morrison suddenly finds himself as a babyface for the first time in his WWE career. Everything that made him interesting as a character screamed 'heel.' This is part of why it is problematic to not turn him babyface, but just have him sort of become a babyface. Other than being good in the ring and not liking Benjamin or Jericho, what makes him a babyface? He had a chance to answer that question, but he didn't. He couldn't be himself, or he would be heelish. Instead he was bland.
Raw Portion of the Show: Other than being disappointed by Morrison's commentary during the opening match, Superstars was entertaining through the fourth commercial break. Then came the Raw portion of the show, and much like Raw itself, things got less interesting. Once again, they aired a Raw Rebound. Raw wasn't fun to watch live on Monday night, and I didn't need to see it recapped on ECW, and I certainly didn't need to see it recapped again on Superstars. Please stop reminding me of crappy television. Then they showed another video package, focusing on the John Cena - Big Show feud. I haven't enjoyed the feud, and I didn't enjoy being reminded of it. Sure, they showed a video early in the show about Morrison vs. Benjamin, but it was short and set up a very good match. These longer videos gave Superstars a Heat feel, which is bad. The idea behind the exhibition match was ridiculous. I know they wanted to make Show look like an ass, and they wanted to underscore the fact that Vickie Guerrero is a heel. This may have accomplished those goals, but in a very boring manner. Also, it once again calls into question the board of directors for putting her in that position when these are the decisions that she makes. Why was there a referee for this exhibition, when there wasn't for the one on Raw? The last 20 minutes of the show were a total waste of time. The only positive that I can see is the possible interaction between Hornswoggle and Goldust on Raw.
